‘Dear Sex Workers, We recognize the importance of today, the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. Sincerely, Bollywood’ #lettersthatshouldexist
obsession with the courtesan is forever fascinating. The complexities of sex work have accumulated into ‘the spectre that haunts’ most discussions re: labor rights across the globe. And violence against any person is, well, just too damn normal in 2018 for any relevant words. #sareenotsorry
but I know I’m not the only one who noticed how “making it” in Bollywood for women meant getting the #courtesan
role—so what are your thoughts on this? Is it because Bollywood is obsessed with projecting a luxurious lifestyle and well high class courtesans are the ultimate symbol of luxury? Is Bollywood low key Marxist and offering us textual evidence that connects the dots between sex workers and housewives as he suggests in the communist manifesto? Do we just love jhoomers? Or perhaps we collectively just enjoy watching talented and intelligent women dance and recite poetry in exchange for capital gain because, well, misogyny? 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️ what’s your theory?
