In the language of Japan's first people, 'sisamu' is the Ainu word for neighbour. Established in in 1999, Sisam is motivated to be a good neighbour to growers and makers in Japan and beyond, valuing fair trade, local cultural knowledge and traditional methods of artisanal production. Their braided sandals are hand made at a small workshop in Osaka, where Mr Kumamoto, 78, has been making leather shoes for over 64 years! His now intuitive mastery of leather, its character, strengths and capacities, is underpinned by dedication and practice. Like Sisam, the maker is proud to share these beautiful and useful shoes with you, continuing to seek out and deepen our relationships with makers and neighbours alike.
