@natgeo @stevewinterphoto I've been photographing and filming cheetahs with my assistant @alexbraczkowski in the southwestern grasslands of South Africa this week. New research led by Sarah Durant and colleagues suggests there may be as few as ~7100 cheetahs left in Africa, and that if their populations are to survive, they need good protection inside national parks to offset losses in community areas where they clash with farmers! Did you know that cheetahs have good hunting success! These two males along with one other female ate 80 blesbuck, nearly 100 springbuck and some hartebeest calves in just five months! National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative is working towards the conservation of African lions, leopards and cheetahs across Africa. Increasing anti-poaching efforts, installing protective bomas to stop conflict between big cats and livestock and they even monitor big cats numbers with camera traps. Visit https://www.nationalgeographic.org/projects/big-cats-initiative/ to find out how you can help save big cats today, and remember by saving apex predators we keep ecosystems balanced and healthy! Hey folks. This is an out of the ordinary post of a screenshot to commemorate an exciting evening for Sharon Guynup and I. Tonight we're attending the Society of Professional Journalists The Deadline Club awards ceremony. Sharon and I are finalists in the Magazine Investigative Journalism category for the Tiger Temple story Sharon wrote and the accompanying video I shot and co-produced with Sharon. The story was an exclusive on @NatGeo 's Wildlife Watch blog. I also want to mention Sharon was also the winner of the 2017 Arlene Award “for an article that makes a difference” from the American Society of Journalists and Authors for this same story. Sharon wrote 4 stories on this topic for @natgeo and never gave up until all 147 tigers were confiscated and the temple’s tiger operations were shut down. We’ll find out if we won tonight at the Harvard Club, but regardless this is an incredible honor and we're excited to meet so many people doing such important work! Click on the link in my bio to read the story and stay tuned. I might even post an even rarer photo of myself! #sharonguynup @wildaid #tigertemple #wildlifetrafficking #wildlifecrime #tigers #tigertrafficking #journalism #tigertemple #thailand #richardparker @cee4life #cee4life #wildlifephotography #wildlife #wildlifephotojournalist #teamwork
@natgeo @stevewinterphoto African lions may number as few as 32 000 individuals across the continent. South Africa is has an important stronghold of lions, in Kruger and in the Kgalagadi, and most populations south of the Zambezi river are largely stable or increasing. I photographed these seven lion cubs on the Tswalu Kalahari reserve. Their mother died but her sister adopted all seven! How cool is that? National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative is working towards the conservation of African lions, leopards and cheetahs across Africa. Increasing anti-poaching efforts, installing protective bomas to stop lion-cattle conflict and monitoring big cats numbers with camera traps. I've been working on a @natgeo Jaguar story across the America's. Last month I set camera traps in southern Arizona with @alexbraczkowski. Here is a video showing the landscape in which jaguars and other species such as coyotes, javelina and mountain lions in the USA live! You can see the beautiful mixed oak, ponderosa pine and Apache pine habitats where jaguars walk. Jaguars here use mountains so we've been setting camera traps as high as 9000 feet with the @uarizona Wild Cat Research and Conservation group who are studying jaguar genetics in the USA. It is important for us to keep habitat corridors between Mexico and the USA open for jaguars to cross, even across the US border wall. The last female jaguar in the USA was killed some 50 years ago but the new males recorded in Arizona give hope to the species! Song credit:https://www.youtube.com/c/NCMEpicMusic My first story with big cats was the 1st @natgeo Jaguar story 20 years ago! It has changed my life working with the magical and magnificent cats of the world. Forests provide us with up to 50% of the oxygen we breathe - oceans the rest. They give us 75% of the fresh water. If we can save the forest of the Amazon and other areas in Central and South America for the JAGUAR and Puma. The forests of Central Africa for the leopard, lion, elephants etc. And the forests of South Asia for the Tigers and Leopards. If you save the top predator in any ecosystem you save everything that lives with them. So if - We Save Big Cats we can help Save Ourselves. Please visit CauseAnUproar.org to find out other ways to become involved to save big cats! #follow me @stevewinterphoto to see more images from my work with @natgeo Thanks!! @stevewinterphoto @nglive #nglive @natgeochannel @natgeowild @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #fursforlife #BCI #bigcatsintiative #startwith1thing @projetooncafari @refugioecologicocaiman @pantanalsafaris #canonusa #redcine #ldfoundation @leonardodicaprio @sanctuaryasia @canonusapro
@stevewinterphoto @natgeo Here are moms and their sons and daughters - lion families are very cool. Please watch a South African film on canned hunting by environmental film maker Ian Michler - http://www.bloodlions.org About 50% of the lions from lion farms end up in the Chinese bone and skin trade. Our animal family is so much like us - they find mates, they have kids, they have to feed themselves and their families,
they feed themselves and their families in the same way we as humans used to! If we can find a way to believe they think, feel and have emotions,
maybe we can treat them better and find a way to ensure their future on this planet.
We do not treat our own human brothers and sisters very well sometimes.
Remember just as an example of the importance of their homes - the forests.
50% of our oxygen comes from forest - the other 50% from the oceans.
75% of fresh water comes from forests. So we save their homes - we help save ourselves. @natgeo @stevewinterphoto - More Rhinos came today!! Rhinos are returning to Rwanda for the first time in over a decade! The last one was seen in 2007 but this week, in a historic move, the conservation group @AfricanParksNetwork along with the Rwanda Development Board moved the first 10 Eastern black rhinos from South Africa to Rwanda where they were released today into @AkageraPark - one of 10 parks managed by African Parks. Rhinos are under serious threat across their range due to the illegal trade in rhino horn. Fewer than 5,000 black rhino remain in the wild, of which 1,000 are the Eastern black rhino subspecies. Up to 20 Eastern black rhino will be translocated by African Parks over the following weeks, restoring hope for the species, and solidifying Rwanda as a conservation leader on the continent. Follow @africanparksnetwork to watch this translocation unfold, and the return of rhinos to Rwanda. #rhinos #rhinomove #rwandarhinos #Akagera #savetherhinos #worthmorealive #AfricanParks @nglive #nglive @natgeochannel @natgeowild @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #fursforlife #BCI #bigcatsintiative #startwith1thing @projetooncafari @refugioecologicocaiman @pantheracats @pantanalsafaris #canonusa #redcine @africanparksnetwork #ldfoundation @leonardodicaprio @sanctuaryasia #bigwin

@natgeo @stevewinterphoto Hello From South Africa! I'm sharing this photo of a White Rhino that in honor #savetherhinoday , which was yesterday, May 1st. It's great to have a day dedicated to the awareness of an animal's plight but it's also important to remember that conservation is 24/7 thing. I've contributed a photo to the soon-to-be published "Remembering Rhinos" book. Tickets for the book launch event the Royal Geographical Society in London on 1st November just went on sale at: http://bit.ly/RhinosRGSlaunch. Speakers include Will Travers OBE, President of The Born Free Foundation, Johan Marais, founder of Saving the Survivors and me. All profits from the event go to rhino conservation.#savetherhinoday #rememberingrhinos "
@natgeo @stevewinterphoto It is National Arbor Day!!! This annual tree planting holiday is all about celebrating trees!!! Trees help clean pollutants in the air, pull carbon from the atmosphere slowing climate change, keep our rivers and streams clean. Provide 50% of the oxygen we need to breathe and grasslands and forests provide us with 75% of fresh water!! visit @ArborDayFoundation #NationalArborDay #follow me @stevewinterphoto to see more images from my work with @natgeo and Thanks!! @stevewinterphoto @natgeo @nglive #nglive @natgeochannel @natgeowild @thephotosociety @natgeocreative #fursforlife #BCI #bigcatsintiative #startwith1thing @projetooncafari @refugioecologicocaiman @pantheracats @pantanalsafaris #canonusa #redcine @africanparksnetwork #ldfoundation @leonardodicaprio @sanctuaryasia
