A perfect lady Sherlock costume for a foggy London.
I bought this book back in Pavlovsk by a lucky chance. Imagine me walking out of the museum, inspired by all these beautiful costumes, and - in the bookshop - seeing absolutely nothing on the topic. Suddenly, I notice something among the usual tourists guides on the palace, and it is this! one! book! remaining. So never stop digging, even when the hope is lost :D

Yesterday, in an uncharacteristic flurry of activity, I decided to move everything from our ‘storage’ room to the attic rooms and make way for a bed. Next weekend we’re due to have an interstate visitor and there’s not a solitary space clear, unless she wants to sleep on a couch in the hall! So I moved boxes upstairs for an hour and contemplated where to put the bed... which just happened to be the trigger for my friend to ring and say she’d forgotten to tell me she’s not coming!!! I mean, what the freaking hell!!! Could her ears not have burnt an hour before I started lugging stuff?? The upside is, I got my 10k steps for the day done and I listened to a playlist I made for The Story of Us Trilogy. It made me want to open up my laptop and start writing emotional love scenes again. See?! Every cloud does have a silver lining... unless it’s a dust cloud and then it’s sort of grey and sneezy. .

The 1890s called. They want their plaid back. Here's my next project: a white cotton shirtwaist and a plaid skirt for Oakland Cemetery's Sunday in the Park. This is the finished mock up, self drafted, and my fabric! So excited for historical wear again 🍂

Title: The Reaches of New York City.
Mapmaker: Albert H. Bumstead (1874 - 1940)
Technique: Colour engraving
Very decorative pre-world war II map of New York surrounded by numerous portraits of famous persons. Inset of South Jersey at lower right.
Bumstead was an American cartographer and inventor, born in Boston in 1875, and attended Worcester Academy. He went to Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and studied civil engineering. After WPI, he was a surveyor for the U.S. Geological Survey. In 1912, he was the topographer of the Yale University expedition to Peru, and by 1916 he was a cartographer at the National Geographic Society.
Inspiration can come from anywhere- here’s the last page of Chapter 1 of Mosaic Staircase, with a crowd scene sketched from a postcard I picked up in Norway of Edward Grieg’s 60th birthday. We were on our 10th wedding anniversary cruise around the fjords, but somewhere in my mind I must have thought this would be useful for the graphic novel!
So excited! Just got my new phone! I have officially joined the 90’s.....#1890s
that is! All ready for the future.... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Throwback to this awesome house I lived in while I was in my senior year at @collegeofcharleston
! My friend and I rented to top floor, which included that super cool tower on top of the roof with 360 degree windows! My love for old homes began in Charleston, and I lived in a few 1890s houses during my 6 years there. Living here was truly special. My cat would hang out on the roof and we would blast music out of the tower (one time the cops showed up and couldn't believe it when they didn't see a party inside...just two girls playing Talking Heads and singing too loud) Happy to have experienced the best of Charleston!

I've got Doucet on my mind, and this late Victorian ball gown which combines severity and frou-frou in equal parts, with a strong nod to 18th century fashion, is my current favourite of his house's creations.⠀

George Pullman and Eugene Debs appear to face off in this spread from a scrapbook on the Pullman Strike, compiled around the time of the strike in 1894. Using clippings of articles and illustrations from newspapers, the scrapbook's creator documented the railroad strike, in which American Railway Union factory workers, led by Debs, walked out over reductions in wages and paternalistic policies put into place by the Pullman Company. We hope that you are enjoying the September challenge, #nothiddenlabor
, as much as we are. In addition to the labor strike featured in today’s post, this post is the product of hidden labor not just by the scrapbook's compiler and by us in the Transportation Library, but also by the library's Repository & Digital Curation unit, which digitized the crumbling scrapbook to make it accessible for public use; and the wonderful people at @nul_prescons
, who made a facsimile for circulation and public use based on those scans. Thanks to our partners @utsaspeccoll

I've only just discovered the work of Czech artist Václav Brozík, and love his depictions of fashion! This is 'At the Ball', 1898, showing intricate draping to create those wide shoulders. Width is exacerbated through the waist-cinching belt, reminiscent of 1860s Swiss waists. #1890s #arthistory #portrait #painting #ballgown #costumehistory
