Yes, it’s daggy, but I just love the energy of Tom Jones. This Australia-only LP release is the only album I have of his on vinyl - a second-hand bargain - and it doesn’t even have my favourite up-tempo song! But it does have “16 electrifying tracks delivered by the world’s top superstar”…!
Tom Jones was not Dean Martin, or Frank Sinatra, nor was he Englebert Humperdinck or Elvis Presley. He sang with a self-conscious awareness that charmed and entertained. The photo on the front cover is a still from some program on Channel 7 in Sydney and it just captures the swagger and assuredness of Tom.
Standout track: On this album there’s ‘Delilah’, there’s ‘Hey Jude’, there’s even ‘Proud Mary’ (?)…! And there’s the emotional pull of ‘I can’t stop Loving You’ and ‘I’ll never fall in Love again’. But my favourite here is a song that I used to despise as a child for its easy-listening country corniness: ‘Green Green Grass of Home’ – now I appreciate its narrative power: the twist in the tale as the singer realises that “yes, I was only dreaming…” but “again, I’ll touch the green green, grass of home.”
Oh, my absent Tom Jones favourites…? ‘What’s New Pussycat?’ and ‘Its Not Unusual’ - of course!
