🇮🇷🇮🇷🇮🇷 The award for most delicious ugly food goes to fessenjan, a savory Persian stew of pomegranate molasses and ground walnuts, typically with chicken. This is one of those dishes where you just can't help but dipping your spoon in for what you swear will be the last taste since you're already bursting at the seams. Fessenjan is savory, tart, a little grainy, sweet, and just so flavorful. Persian cuisine may be the only world cuisine that has two dishes in my top ten (the other dish is ghormeh sabzi, herb stew with dried limes). I do feel a little bad that I'm putting the ugliest picture up front, since the presentation of the other dishes was very nice. I can't resist though. The contrast between fessenjan's appearance and incredible flavor is part of its appeal to me.
We also had tadig, which is basically the crusty bottom of a pot of rice served on a platter crusty side up, transforming it into a dish of its own. At Noon O Kabab, they mix yogurt, egg and saffron into the rice so underneath the toasted brown top, the rice is rich and soft. My friend had shirin polo with joojeh barg, or sweet rice with a saffron chicken kabab. The rice is tossed with golden raisins, topped with julienne carrots, orange peel and tiny, tart barberries. The chicken was wonderful too. 🇮🇷🇮🇷🇮🇷
