Pope Francis Facing Calls to Resign
The Catholic Church is reeling after a grand jury report in Pennsylvania found that possibly more than 1,000 children in six dioceses had been sexually abused by about 300 priests or higher ranking officials. No bishops indicted. Priests regularly produced, distributed, and shared child pornography among themselves, according to the report. The Pope’s response? All words, no action — except, to call on the faithful to ‘pray and fast.’
Former Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano and Vatican ambassador to the U.S. claims the Pope knew about sexual abuse allegations against American Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the former archibishop of Washington DC who resigned in July after new allegations emerged. Vigano says he told Pope Francis in June 2013 that McCarrick had a thick dossier of sexual abuse allegations against him spanning generations. In fact, Vigano asserted, McCarrick was rehabilitated from sanctions imposed by Pope Benedict XVI, promoted and made part of high-profile Vatican events even as rumors about him swirled.
Vigano is now calling for the Pope’s resignation over his inaction and stated: “In this extremely dramatic moment for the universal Church, he must acknowledge his mistakes and, in keeping with the proclaimed principle of zero tolerance, Pope Francis must be the first to set a good example for cardinals and bishops who covered up McCarrick’s abuses and resign along with all of them.” (Source: FoxNews)
