Your microbiome affects your carbohydrate tolerance • I had to do a follow up post on Zeevi et al 2015 because just mentioning this link is not enough • As mentioned in my previous post there are other factors affecting carbohydrate tolerance but here I am focusing on the microbiome- because it is my BIAS- it’s what I study 🙋🏽‍♀️ #fulldisclosure • Types of bacteria called Proteobacteria, Enterobacteria and Actinobacteria (in another chart) had positive associations with blood glucose response (yellow= high +ve correlation/ blue= high -ve correlation). That means the people (800 were tested) who had higher levels of these bacteria also had lower carbohydrate tolerance (higher glucose response to carbohydrates) • The group Enterobacteria (Salmonella family) and Proteobacteria include some bacteria we classify as pathogenic- disease causing or ‘bad’ bacteria • Even more interestingly, these bacteria are usually higher in people who consume low fibre diets. FOOD JUDGEMENT (or fudging as I like to call it) 🙆‍♀️ sometimes I feel soooo judged for picking the 'healthier' option on a menu - people think I'm doing it to compensate and stay healthy, and sometimes I do if I'm honest...but sometimes I actually PREFER that option on the menu 💁‍♀️ NEWS FLASH: NOT EVERYONE PREFERS FRIED CHICKEN OR DEEP FRIED CHEESE 👏 you should pick what YOU want on a menu, rather than trying to prove a point to someone by ordering something less healthy to look like you don't care (as @hollies_eats explained to me SO WELL ❤) With eating out so much tbis week, I decided to pick some 'healthier' options: like this gorgeous aubergine pasta dish which I swapped for pea fusilli instead of normal pasta for less carbs 👉 or this mexican super bowl which I added halloumi and chicken too for that treat/protien hit. Yes these are healthier options, and yes I consciously chose these to be healthier options but they also tasted AMAZING. Order what you want. Simple.
