Are you ready? If you do this, use a block that is not light weight, just like @infinitystrap brik you will feel the burn in your shoulders for sure. . Now let's address the SHOULDER FLEXION. In yoga we see shoulder flexion going to the extreme, like a lot of other joint movements do. . Average range of motion for shoulder flexion is 180° and in yoga for many poses it is expected to be way above this number. Also what, by my opinion lacks in yoga practice are poses that does build strength for shoulder flexion in different way than just holding the flexion. . This is why I did this video to show you hos you can work on your muscles before you begin working on deepening the shoulder flexion. . Some of the shoulder flexion poses are plank, down dog, cat/cow, child pose, puppy pose, hand stand and all standing poses that require you to lift the hands above the head, all seated or kneeling poses with hands above the head. You get it. There are a lot of them. And they all require us to hold our hands in the shoulder flexion. . What I see in most students is they are able to hold hands up in most poses but if you include exercises like the ones I showed (repetitons) they are unable to follow through. So let's see would you be able to follow through? . Agonist muscles: - Anterior Deltoid - Pectoralis Major - Biceps Brachi . Antagonist: - Posterior deltoidd - Latissimus Dorsi - Triceps Brachii . Hello 7 times from all my 7 slides 🤗 Yesterday I skipped posting because I wanted to make new photos and videos. So here I am now. . SHOULDER EXTENSION: Movement of the shoulder that is really common in yoga poses. You can find it in bow, tiger, dancer, unsupported cobra, camel, upward plank, reverse table top.... and I am sure I did forget some, so you can add them in comments. . The muscles that are agonist in shoulder extension are: - latissimus dorsi - posterior deltoid muscles . Antagonists are: - anterior deltoid - pectoralis major . Average range of motion for shoulder extension is 40-60° . WRIST EXTENSION: Again movement of the wrists that is used in many yoga poses- almost all arm balances, upward plank, plank, cat cow, down dog, tiger pose, reverse table top... and many more. . Agonist in wrist extension: - extensor digitorum . Antaginist: - flexor digitorum . Average range of motion 70-75° . I find that these 2 wrist extension amd shoulder extension make a perfect pair as you can see the poses I did choose for shoulder extension go perfectly with wrist extension. . Keep in mind that working on wrist extension may take a long time especially if you are like me and your normal position for the wrists is flexion (I even sleep with my wrists totally flexed). . #AyearOfYoga2018 VS #ayearofyoga2019 Last year it was Rebel that supported me as I wrapped in lotus, but as soon as he stepped away, I was unable to stay long enough for the pic to be taken as my lotus pointed upward. This year I use the wall as a support as I wrapped in lotus, and once my lotus was on, I aligned unto the vertical line, pulled myself up much more than last year, thus I was able to hold it much longer than last year. How is your Sunday gang? I've been studying non stop since yesterday morning. No resting days this weekend.... . Today we are talking about rotations of the spine. . There are 5 different movements of our spine: - flexion of the spine - extension of the spine - lateral flexion/ extension - rotation of the spine (right and left) - axial extension (lenghtening) . Usually axial extension of the spine is forgotten about when we talk about yoga poses. . When speaking about the rotation in yoga we do a lot different rotations in many poses and what you need to understand is the range of motion in rotation. - Cervical spine can normally rotate to 50° left or right - Thoracic spine to 35° - Lumbar spine to 5° . This is why in the video you can find the rotation including the movement of the hips and rotation with hips fixed. . Most yoga poses do imply that your hips need to be fixed while rotating the spine but are also asking you to go much deeper than 35° in thoracic and 5° in lumbar spine. This is why as a teacher I always advise my students to be really gentle in twists. . Yes in time the range of motion will increase and you'll be able to rotate deeper than what is considered to be a normal range of motion but keep in mind normal range of motion is healthy and deeper range might not be healthy for your body so do not force it and do not take it as a goal. . Be mindful of all poses and listen to your body. No need for a deep rotation, because it will not bring you closer to enlightenment but closer to a possible injury 😉 . Lateral flexion / extension of the spine can be dvided into 2 parts. Cervical (neck area)lateral flexion / extension and Lumbar (lower back from diaphragm to sacrum) lateral extension/flexion. . What should not be forgotten is that while you do the lateral flexion/ extension - your belly should be active to prevent any injury as you will have to bare the whole weight of your torso. . While you flex to the left your right side of the torso will extend and vice versa so this is why it is flexion/extension. . Agonists are: - quadratus lomborum - external oblique - internal oblique . Antagonists are the same just on the other side of the body 💪 . I've added a drill from Pilates so you can work on strength and flexibility of the muscles for lateral flexion/extension and at the end added yoga poses to deepen the flexionn/extension. . Most of the yoga poses for lateral flexion/extension require rotation of the spine at the thoracic region so hence you'll find an instruction to open up the chest. . EXTENSION FROM THE HIPS - Yesterday I mentioned that you need to understand that when doing certain movements muscles act in groups of agonists (ones doing the work - contacting) and antagonists (ones stretching) When it comes to extension from the hips agonists are: - Gluteus Maximus - Hamstrings And antagonists are: - Iliopsoas - Tensor Fascia Lat - Rectus Fempris - Saratorius . Now to be able to improve your hip extension you need strong agonists and flexible antagonists. . I made 2 videos with drills focusing on strengthening the agonists. . And let's address the DON'T SQUEEZEU THE GLUTES WHILE BACKBENDING mith! Back bends are extensions from the spine and hips so now that you know what muscles are agonists in hip extension how can you ever think not using your glutes in back bending is ok? . If you want to focus only on extension of the spine than this instruction might be applied but our bodies do not move like bodies of the dolls whit plastic joints where you make a movement from a certain plastic joint with no effect on any other part of the body. Day 21: #ayearofyoga2018 . #vrschikasana #scorpionpose #scorpionhandstand 🦂 . . Here's one I don't work much 😅 so I am okay with the fact that it's stayed virtually identical from 2017-2019. 🤸🏼 But look at the beginning of my journey and you'll def see a transformation. . 2016: I was still using #paulthewall for everything except most basic of #handstand shapes. I used to be super scared of taking a leg behind me (eg stag, bow and arrow, splits, scorpion). My form was 😳 Errrr not great! Not sure why i was planching shoulders over my wrists so much - maybe tight shoulders? Lack of finesse? . 2017: I mean....this progress was nuts. Off the wall, looking fairly good! Handstands every day will do that for ya! I could hold for 30 plus seconds and take my time finding the shape. . 2018: same same. Added in #scorpionpincha to my post just for giggles. I was even more confident but about the same flexibility wise. . 2019: I really truly feel like it's the same. But I understand the mechanics of the pose so much better each year, even if my body can't deliver. Maybe 🧐🧐🧐 maybe I am pushing straighter thru the arms on my handstand. And it kinda looks like I'm pulling chest/head thru more (better neck flexion?). Whatever! Just happy to have this much! Day 14 of #AYearOfYoga2018 ⏰ . @cyogalife . #Kapotasana . So this year I tried really hard to get those hands even further down my calves but actually ended up just being happy with the fact that I can get in this position so much easier than last year (or previous years)! If you swipe left you’ll see just how much improvement I’ve had over the years but also that it’s a slow & steady journey. . I remember when I first started practising this pose & how absolutely exhausting it was trying to get into it & then trying to hold it!! Don’t even start on trying to breathe in it!! But over time & with a lot of dedication to backbends, thoracic spine opening & shoulder opening, it’s become comfier & easier. . It’s still absolutely crazy tough, don’t get me wrong!! 😴🥴 But it’s energising & it’s a very satisfying pose. Definitely haven’t practised it enough this year and I’m looking forward to hopefully getting even deeper over the year to come. 😀 . Busy little day today so I better pop off. This is the pose I dreaded working on even after 5 years of practice. My middle split has definitely regressed. Honestly I just forgot about it. I’ve come to accept that I will never be comfortable in my middle split. If you ask me about flexibility, I will prefer to spend time maintaining my backbend. Day 13 of #AYearOfYoga2018 ⏰ . @cyogalife . #TransversalSplits or #Samokonasana . Hey hey! Catching up today again. So head on back to my post about this shape in handstand to read about my hip placement & thoughts on my splits. You’ll notice in comparison to Carmen I have a pretty tilted pelvis. Anatomy anatomy anatomy! Skeletal variation, skeletal variation! ☺️ It absolutely fascinates me & actually encourages me rather than frustrates me as it makes me content with where I am & stops me pushing further than my limits. Below I’m going to explain a little bit more... ⬇️ . The above might sound like a lot of tosh. Well trust me, it isn’t. I’ve worked on this pose for years & it has taken TIME & PATIENCE to get to this point. It’s not easy at all to get flat to the floor but each persons legs will be at a different angle to their body due to their hip make up & #skeletalvariation of the femur bone into the hip socket. . We have two sensations in stretching: TENSION & COMPRESSION. Tension can be worked on & improved through stretching & time & relates to the #muscles & #connectivetissues - so in this pose we’re mainly stretching the inner thighs (adductors). Compression however relates to BONES. When you hit compression (bone on bone) where do you think you go from there? Nowhere is the answer. ❌ When you’ve hit compression you’ve hit your limit. So if we all have different skeletons (skeletal variation) it makes sense we will all have different experiences in different poses right? ☺️ Keep in mind that 90% of the time you’ll only hit compression once tension has been removed 👍🏻 . Looking forward to talking about this more at some stage but to hear more then read any PAUL GRILLEY books or podcasts featuring him. He’s the absolute master. . So there’s my little anatomy lesson for you tonight! I’m off to bed. I should also mention seeing as this is a progress challenge that I’ve seen so much improvement over the years. The rest are from today of this year. Nowadays, I can press to tripod headstand. I can keep my hips higher too and get my folded knee closer to the armpit of the same side. I try to lift my trunk and head up from the floor or from tripod headstand and yes, I’m able to do it, for the first time - next is to try to transition from crow to tripod headstand and vice versa, soon. I try for one legged crow today and yes, I can have one foot airborne, even for just a second or two - it’s a good start for more #armbalances and #handstandprep practice, and finding my center of gravity to kick up and more! 🙏 ‘Ever grateful to our amazing host @cyogalife ❤️ Thank you so much.
