National volunteer week - "I chose to spend my spring break volunteering at Lake Mead because my dad has always inspired me to be outdoors and give back to the earth. He would love to be out here experiencing everything that I’ve been doing and all the ways I’ve been able to help out". Quote by Haley Foster, Kent State University

Lake Mead has hosted Alternative Spring Break groups for the past four years. This year, 14 students from Kent State University came to learn some of the ways National Park Service staff protect our natural and cultural resources. They documented petroglyphs, assisted at the park’s native plant nursery and pulled invasive Sahara Mustard. The volunteers completed daily projects that would have taken 2 or 3 available resource management employees’ weeks to complete on their own. "I am so glad that I signed up for this Alternative Spring Break trip - It allowed me to continue my education on many topics that I've not thought about for quite a while. Everyone we spoke with from the park has been absolutely wonderful". Quote by Amanda Colucci, Kent State University

This year we hosted our first Alternative Spring Break! We had five awesome students from Appalachian State University, North Carolina A&T State University, High Point University and UNC Greensboro.
Each morning students participated in a service project. They cleaned up a stream at Barber Park. Helped out at Out of the Garden Project. Sorted items The Salvation Army store. Worked in the BackPack Beginnings warehouse. Lastly, they helped paint a wall at the Family Success Center.
In the afternoon, students got a behind the scenes look at cool local businesses like Forge Greensboro, Center for Creative Leadership, HQ Greensboro, International Civil Rights Center & Museum and Revolution Mill. This was an exciting week for the students and for United Way.
Thank you to the students who decided to spend their spring break with us. Thank you to all of our service sites and businesses for joining us for our first LoveGSO Alternative Spring Break! Another big thank you to FOX8 for awesome news coverage of the week!
