Frederick Douglass-- abolitionist, orator, writer, social reformer, statesman and supporter of women's right to vote. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings. In his time, he was described by abolitionists as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens. Interesting fact via history.com, "His mother was of Native American ancestry and his father was of African and European descent. He was actually born Frederick Bailey (his mother’s name), and took the name Douglass only after he escaped." . . #cedarhilldc #slavery #thingstoseeindc #dc #history #blackhistoryfacts #washingtondc #travel #museum #smithsonian #nationalpark #americanhistory #equalityforall #humanrights .@frederickdouglassnps
Hey DC - Come on out to Cedar Hill @frederickdouglassnps today! I will be signing "111 Places in Washington That You Must Not Miss" in commemoration of Frederick Douglass - Chapter 21 in the guidebook. This place represents the full and rich life of the great abolitionist, orator, statesman, and self-made man who rose from enslavement to working in the company of Presidents. Park Rangers tell amazing stories, and the view from the hill is singular. Because it's #blackhistorymonth and @frederickdouglassnps is honoring Douglass' 200th birthday. #Douglass200 #CedarHillDC
Happy Black History Month! This year is the bicentennial of #FrederickDouglass ’ birth. The abolitionist was born in 1818. He never knew the date of his birth, but picked Feb. 14 because of a memory of his mother. Did you know that you can walk the same halls Frederick Douglass walked at his Washington, D.C. home. Cedar Hill is located in #Anacostia and provides a fascinating look into the last years of the famous orator’s life. It’s definitely worth checking out!
As a former slave, Frederick Douglass was self-taught. His library includes hundreds of books and demonstrates how well-read he was. My absolute favorite part of the Frederick Douglass House tour is the growlery in the backyard. He used the solitude to read, write, and think about the pressing issues of his day. Take a peek inside, and then promptly add a growlery to your wish list. Frederick Douglass was also a supporter of women’s suffrage. The ladies’ guest room in his house includes a portrait of suffragette Elizabeth Cady Stanton above the fireplace and she likely stayed there on a visit. The view from the Frederick Douglass House is said to be beautiful, but it was raining on the day I visited. A neighbor and friend invited me to a #dcpreservationleague (dcpl) tour this am of the #FrederickDouglass house in #Anacostia (he had several properties). I remember writing a paper about him in grade school, but I learned a lot more today. The views from his home on a hill rival the best in DC! From this porch, Frederick Douglass could view the state where he was bound by slavery (MD) and the places where he worked for freedom (DC/NY). This is one of my favorite places as it reminds me no matter where we've been or how hard the struggle, justice and equality prevail. Through education, patience, perseverance, compassion and love, we can always rise out of whatever situation keeps us down. #frederickdouglass #gratitude365 #historyisimportant
"If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want the rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one, or it may be a physical one, and it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will." In honor of #LaborDay here is a photograph depicting a Bricklayers Union in Jacksonville, FL around 1899. In the late 1800s, African American workers, tradesmen, and professionals who were excluded from all-white labor unions organized their own unions. Frederick Douglass's son Lewis did exactly that in 1869. Barred from the Columbia Typographical Union, he became secretary of the Colored National Labor Union, which was formed as a "safeguard for the colored man." #findyourpark #frederickdouglass #cedarhilldc #nationalparkservice #nationalparks
