As we approach the end of a fabulous #rbms18
, we perused our collections for something related to New Orleans we could post in tribute to this amazing city. These colorful original costume designs were from the “New Orleans” number in Jerry Jackson’s “Galaxies” production show which was actually staged in Australia in the late 1980s. We’re guessing that Jackson may have heard about the infamous Storyville district and perhaps envisioned something of a brothel/bordello type scene with accompanying lingerie-like designs. We feel fortunate that the swatches have survived, as they provide a clear view of the multiple fabric textures that were used in the construction of the actual designs. The designs depict a rather romanticized version of brothel life even as they showcase Jackson’s skill at historic costume design. From the Jerry Jackson Papers (MS-00573). #librariesofinstagram #specialcollectionsandarchives #specialcollections #neworleans #galaxies #productionshow #costumedesign #historiccostumdesign #costumedesigner #jerryjackson
I call this life balance (a pretty filtered pic to balance out the mad madam mim post) also...serious question I have while attempting to plan for my professional future. How do other freelance costume designers go about this?! Do you even try thinking hourly? By show? By build? Do you negotiate offers being made? Is it time to try and join a union?! What are other designers opinions on joining/or not?! I missed this day in class apparently... & now am confused, confounded, & confronted by hard decisions & self doubt. #professionaladvice #helpme #costumedesign #costumedesigner #costumedesigners #freelanceartist #freelancer #theatrelife
Madeleine Vionnet | c. 1936

The genius of Madeleine Vionnet is only truly comprehended through an understanding of the remarkable pattern pieces that comprise her designs. Her gowns, while sometimes explicitly classical in derivation, are more often an assimilation of general concepts gleaned from the study of antique styles. In this example, Vionnet takes the idea of a continuous piece of cloth and torques it into a tunic gown. There is a seam that extends the width of the cloth, but save this, the apparent two-piece garment is cut-in-one. Like the work of other designers who have explored this economy of cut-Grès, Balenciaga, Issey Miyake, and Halston-Vionnet's gowns, when unstitched and unfurled, are surprising in their Platonic geometries. Unlike traditional patterns, hers have an abstraction that can confound someone schooled in traditional pattern-making.

After a great workshop on costume design, the kids made bright, happy headpieces for their upcoming Coppelia showcase. I, on the other hand, channeled my inner Tatiana and went all Midsummer’s Night Dream 😉 #ballet #costumedesign #summerintensive
Semi-annual Japanese monster post, because I just love them so much.
Gotta have that kritzykritzy ✨ Vintage jacquard trim layered over a cheap metallic satin ribbon is lovely combination, if I do say so myself.
Olha quem tá por aqui de novo!
O nosso querido body shorts saia com rendas, franjas e pedrarias agora foi reproduzido na contrastante combinação de vermelho e preto sob encomenda. O que vocês acharam?

During Hollywood's classical era, little expense was spared for costume design and creation. That said, costumes were reused from film to film. A good example: Gene Kelly wears the same coat jacket in Singin' in the Rain (pic 1) and Take Me Out to the Ballgame (pic 2). Have you noticed other "repeat outfits" in Kelly's films? #genekelly #classichollywood #costume #costumedesign #costumedesigner #oldhollywood
Happy preview to Anything Goes!! Wish these photos had all the fringe present, but who can complain 😶 it was a pleasure clothing this cast of incredible people in over 400 garments, 52 hats, 68 accessories, 46 pairs of shoes, 70 pieces of jewelry and every freaking jewel you can imagine. So much love to this show, cast and team. #costumedesign #costumedesigner #like #love #anythinggoes
