Sometimes I get to make costume pieces for other performers too! This mermaid crown is off to Vancouver to swim with @mermaid_kaida
It seemed only appropriate that the Queen of the Dragonfishes have a sea dragon on her crown 🐠

Gory construction details:
All the sea creatures are 3D printed in ABS plastic, I placed the headband base on a mannequin head to hold its shape, and then hot glued the starfish and horns in place - this is just to hold them in the correct placement while I finished up the rest of the base construction. Hot glue has its place and this is one of them.
I then used a putty I made by dissolving some scrap ABS from the printing process in some pure acetone to weld the shells, starfish, shells, horns and weedy seadragon together. I also used it to thicken up some more delicate areas and generally fine tune some parts the printer had left a little rough.
Once the acetone had fully evaporated out of the plastic, I gently pried the headband from the rest of the crown and removed the hot glue entirely with isopropyl alcohol.
Now it was time for painting! I used Valspar outdoor high gloss plastic paint. This was my first time building a color gradient like this with spray paint, so I was pretty nervous and watched a LOT of videos, as well as trying it out on some extra sea critters I printed, before I went near the crown. It is cold as heck out so this stage took over a week because each layer of paint took an eternity to cure!
Once the paint had finally cured enough to touch, I reattached the crown to the headband with E6000, also attaching some stretch lace along the inside of the headband to create straps that can be tied under the hair for more stability.
Finally it was time for rhinestones and seaweed embellishments! Also firmly glued in place with E6000
After a final cleanup she was ready for her photoshoot and to get shipped out to her new home!
