Our incredible view from just above the motorcycle hill camp on Mt Denali a year ago. We didnโ€™t always have great views like this but when we did we were all speechless. I still think about this climb every day and how much I learned from the mountain and my teammates. #realalpineadventure #peakstratagem #denali #alaska #neverstopexploring ##outdoorresearch #petzl #marmot #mountainhardware #lowa #blackdiamondequipment #BD #rab #rabequipment #climbing #peakeats #trainingforthenewalpinisim #optputside #rei1440project #denali2018 #hshive #honeystinger #stingorbeestung #sweetentheburn

We are ready to get off the mountain! 18 days has been a blast! Our tired feet and weary beards we grew on the mountain have come to an end ๐Ÿ™Œ Sheldon Air Service came in that morning and we were the first ones picked up off the glacier! โœˆ After landing back in Talkeetna it felt odd to be back walking on pavement. It was a journey for the ages! Feel free to ask any questions as this recap of Denali 2018 Expedition comes to a conclusion. Cheers to my teammates @gdbrekke @hippidyhoppidy @a_chef_on_the_mountains and Andy Haugh from New Zealand who joined us from another team ๐Ÿ’ฏ Get out and venture the world ๐ŸŒ #denali2018 #alaska #adventure #mountains #roam
Coming down from 14,200 feet we stop at 11k camp to grab some of our gear we cached. You don't need snowshoes at 16,000 feet while traversing the knifedge West Buttress ๐Ÿ˜„ or on the 45-55 degree fixed lines. Crampons were used above 11k. Snowshoes, gas, clean mountain can, other little bits of gear we picked up. Also giving away our food as well! The less weight we have going down the better! We strapped on our snowshoes and started the journey down! From 11,000 feet to 7,800 feet at Camp 1. We stop for a midnight dinner ๐Ÿœ Hot soup feels so good! It is much warmer down here at 7,800 feet than 14,200. Nice weather too! Clear and beautiful! ๐Ÿ’ฏ The journey to base camp from Camp 1 was pure hell with my feet having sores from the feet pushing against the front of my boot while going down and down. Painful but did not want to stop here as an opportunity to fly out tomorrow would be a delight! Fight through the pain ๐Ÿ’ชWe got into base camp around 4am setup camp one more time and slept for a few hours till morning ๐ŸŒ„ #denali2018 #alaska #adventure #mountains #roam
Gregg this is your picture again! ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿ˜„ Before you know it we are heading down the mountain! My teammates summitted, came down, we all rested for a few hours then we woke up in -30ยฐF temps NOT including the Wind Chill. None of us could feel our fingers or toes but we had to get going to warm up! No eating to be had just about ๐Ÿ˜„ Half of the journey was over the important half was creeping up on us! Wanting to go home but so much elevation to be had to go down. Fixed lines, Windy Corner, Squirrel Hill, Motorcycle Hill, all gave us shit and we were beaten down. All of us gave out a nice loud "ARGHHH" on the way down ๐Ÿ˜„ Today we would descend from 17,200 high camp to a much warmer felt like sea level 14,200 feet ๐Ÿ˜„ Tomorrow we will walk all day, high and into the morning hours of June 5th to get back to base camp to fly out ASAP! For now at 14,200 feet we gather our gear, eat, read, give out all the rest of our food to the other needy climbers at Camp and prepare to head down tomorrow morning! Safe travels to all in the mountains! Remember why you are adventuring in the mountains but remember to come back safe to the ones that matter ๐Ÿ’ฏ #alaska #alwaysforward #denali2018 #alaska #roam
Gregg this is your picture on your phone ๐Ÿ˜„ Cheers to a Denali summit! Congrats to the men who trumped a good day and climbed to the top! I overheard on our radio while in the tent via High Camp that they have submitted and are coming down. Long long day for them! 12 hours roundtrip was it? A bit more if I can remember! Some don't know how hard it is to climb Denali. To compare it to Everest is not wrong at all. Here is a big thing though.... YOU are carrying the gear.... YOU are carrying the food. YOU are carrying your shit around in a can.... YOU are in the elements and not glamping back in your tent. It's not all glory but that summit sure feels nice! Congrats again! Will I go back and try for the summit again? Don't ask me that ๐Ÿ˜„ since I am relieving Denali 2018 over again it has jolted my mind but there are other places I want to explore first ๐Ÿ˜„ Everest base camp, Banff, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus some beautiful places indeed ๐Ÿ’ฏ My summit team came down safely! Drank some warm drinks, ate a little food and we all now rest for a few hours till we climb down in a couple hours ๐Ÿ˜„ yes we will haul ads down the mountain! I'll post another picture later today mentioning the descent and -30ยฐF NUMBING COLD ๐Ÿฅถ #alwaysforward #denali2018 #alaska #adventure #mountains
Here at High Camp one rest day is enough! The cold and altitude can get to us climbers at times. Headaches can occur or worse Altitude mountain sickness. One of our teammates had bad AMS so we gathered as a team to discuss what to do. Should we push on for the summit or pack up and head down? On a beautiful warm day at 17,200 feet via Denali which rarely happens a couple of my team members pushed on for the summit. I elected to stay behind and keep an eye on our sick team member. See if you can spot the route and 3 little ants on the traverse to Denali Pass and gateway to the summit! Leaving for the summit means no early start as it'll be BONECHILLING COLD ๐Ÿฅถ But I'll explain more on bone chilling cold tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜„ Here I am at base camp with radio waiting for that summit call from my other members ๐Ÿ’ฏ #alwaysforward #denali2018 #adventure #mountains
Rest Day at 17,200 feet! Getting into high camp yesterday was tough for us all! We arrived late this having the shadows around and that didn't help things having the temps dip down to around -20F with hardly any wind was a blessing so it wouldn't get any colder! ๐Ÿฅถ Breathing that cold air at this altitude and with this location via latitude and longitude you are breathing close to 1,000 feet more than usual. That cold saps your energy so quick! During this trip I lost 8 pounds....and I'm skin and bones ๐Ÿ˜ฉ So I lost a lot of muscle during the 18 days ๐Ÿ’ช pictured is 14k camp below. Some make the summit push from 14k camp to the top! We wait till we are healthy and ready for a summit attempt! #alwaysforward #liveyouradventure #alaska #denali2018
โ€œThe best view comes after the hardest climb.โ€ This was no cake walk but it certainly wasnโ€™t the hardest climb. Perhaps the hardest climbs, the mental ones, are now behind. There will always be more and Iโ€™m thankful I have the tools to deal with whatever life throws at me. I want that toolkit for everyone else. Some parting #mentalhealthawarenessmonth thoughts as Iโ€™m still coming down from last weekโ€™s meaningful @getheadstrong event: Mental health care is not just for people with mental illness, itโ€™s for every person with a heartbeat. /// Two more travel adventures before I make my way to Capitol Hill with my fellow @highgroundvets to work to turn words and ideas into policy. Iโ€™m sure the view from the top of that climb will be just as rewarding as this one was, one year ago! May all your climbs end in a view: As long as you give your best, you can look back and be satisfied with what you see. I also find having a person or two by your side to share the view with, one who went through the shit with you, is worth its weight in gold. (Of course @yeti_living and I summited as a team but I was just recently made aware of this photoโ€™s existence. A cheezinโ€™ #๐Ÿง€ for the ages. Good luck to all the climbers currently on the mountain!) #flashbackfriday #fbf #freezingfriday #denalisummit #viewfromthetop #happyclimber
After our big push to high camp yesterday, it was rest time at 17,200 feet! There was talks on the radio of a brief storm coming through but we weren't really wanting to push on in a possible blizzard on steep 55ยฐ slopes so we made a decision to rest! Produce more red blood cells ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ‘ The team is mostly good with a few headbangers as headaches affecting us but we pop some pills and rest ๐Ÿ’ฏ It is COLD in the shadows! -30 F degree wind chills Climb on! #alwaysforward #denali2018 #alaska #adventure #mountains
Cache Day climb at 16,200 feet! We also took on another climbing partner! Andy from New Zealand wanted another shot at the summit after spending three nights at high camp in -30 degree F temperature not including the Wind Chill he mentioned ๐ŸŒก โ„ Andy was a great addition to our team. So helpful and inspiring to keep going! He had simple gear but his attitude was amazing! He met his other climbers online if I remember so Andy didn't have to go back home since he was on his own ๐Ÿ’ฏ To go back up the fixed lines for another cache, more time at high altitude, and more at that COLD COLD high camp is incredible! ๐ŸคŸ Andy is pictured in the second photo. The first photo is our cache point๐Ÿ’› #alaska #alwaysforward #denali2018 #mountains
Our first rest day at 14,200 feet. Boy what a crazy adventure it has been and we are hardly half way there ๐Ÿ˜„ we take a short walk to the Edge of the World with 3,000 feet of air below us ๐Ÿ™Œ Simone and I went down about 600 feet before Windy Corner to grab our cache we hauled up a few days back. Some work but still rest for us all! We also look at the route up above us. 2,000 steep feet to climb. Simone looked up and said " We're not going up there." Was this the end of our journey? No way! Rest day means to recooperate for the next few days of cache, waiting and then climbing higher to our High Camp at 17,200 feet. To be in unknown terrain is an adrenaline rush. It messes with your mind causing you to be a bit lackadaisical. More to come on that later! Anyway today is our rest day! Stay tuned! ๐Ÿ™Œ #denali2018 #alaska #adventure #mountains
One of our team members Gregg snapped our picture heading up to 14,200 feet. Pictured here is our anguish and exhaustion ๐Ÿ˜ต We are taking a rest break below Windy Corner. Hardly any wind just a bit chilly ๐Ÿฅถ What we saw above us was clouds and wind. When we arrived at camp a good size micro storm brewed up with blizzard like winds ๐Ÿ’จ we were tired and needed to find a spot in the snow to make camp. In a blizzard at 14,200 feet it's hard enough to walk but to pitch tents is miserable. No dinner for me just a ROCK HARD candy bar ๐Ÿซ No change of clothes just get in the sleeping bag and get warm. Safe and sound until the morning ๐Ÿ’› #alwaysforward #alaska #adventure #denali2018
One week into our Denali Expedition! Today is a Rest Day at 11,000 feet! Doing our cache yesterday means rest and recover. Climb high, sleep low ๐Ÿ™Œ Sometimes rest day doesn't mean sleeping and relaxing. Shoveling and melting snow are two big daily chores to do. Cleaning your area in the tent. Drying gear if the weather is good ๐Ÿ™Œ We talked with the team in the picture a bit as well. We have been on their tail since base camp! Good team from California! This elevation of the mountain you can see some effects of altitude. Some of our teammates were having bad bowel movements. Headaches are not uncommon here. Pop some Ibuprofen in, take some altitude pills, drink water and rest ๐Ÿ’ค Sometimes we would wake up with a lack of air in our bodies causing us to cough, and even breath heavily. A little bit of a scare when you wake up and have little to no air to breath ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Tomorrow we will climb up to 14,200 feet known as Camp 3 on the West Buttress Route. Climb on! โ›ฐ #alwaysforward #alaska #mountains #adventure #denali2018
Yesterday was rest day at 11k camp so I went to Rainier for an adventure ๐Ÿ˜„ Today is a journey to our cache site just below 14k camp. This is a hard push up Motorcycle Hill with our sleds and gear. Not only Motorcycle Hill but Squirrel Hills, and Windy Corner. Luckily due to the inches of snow dumped at 11k camp two days ago, Windy Corner got a nice coating of snow over the ice. Taking our cache up was difficult and tough for us all but We dug deep! We shoveled down a good 2 feet, stored our gear and returned to 11,000 feet. A cache and an acclimatization day! #alwaysforward #adventure #mountains #denali2018 #alaska
Rest Day via over time to climb! Climbing from 7,800 feet to about 11,000 feet into Camp 2 was a nice long day! Towards the end we got socked into the Ping Pong via a whiteout. As long as we could see the trail we were good! But it didn't let it up as the closer we got to 11k camp it started to dump snow AND DID NOT STOP โ„ inches by the hour! We got our cook tent up and had ourselves some dinner before stepping out in the snowstorm to pitch out tents. Hardly no wind which made it somewhat bareable to make camp but still crazy snow amounts! Today was a good push by all from the team! Tomorrow will be a rest day here at 11,000 feet ๐Ÿ˜Š Looking SW at Foraker and a short break in the clouds โ˜โค #denali2018 #alaska #mountains #travel

Day 2 on Denali! So far it has been great weather on our adventure! Our team rested and practiced our crevasse rescue. Up in the Alaskan Wilderness it is necessary to know your gear and save yourself because help may not come for days. Looking back at Mt Hunter heading out of base camp. at 7,200 feet we head aptly named "Heartbreak Hill" to Camp 1 at 7,800 feet. People ask me why I wanted to climb Denali, as before 2016 Iโ€™d never done big-mountain anything. I was *just an adrenaline junkie, sometimes-skydiver/always-runner. The honest answer is this: My foot was newly filled with metal; no more real running. I needed to put something on the calendar that served as both an endurance GOAL to strive for and a REWARD for all the brain/neuro rehab and surgeries Iโ€™d put my life on hold to finish. Thatโ€™s why I committed to Denali in 2016. I found a like-minded teammate and the rest is history. Through training (understatement ๐Ÿ”จ) I fell in love with being out there, embracing the cold and doing what I do best: Adapting. Allowing myself time for mountains was an act of #selfcare . We boot strapped this climb as two women who strongly believed in each other and the therapeutic effects of Mother Nature, particularly from a military veteran standpoint. Setting some records along the way was just the cherry on top. /// A year ago we had an amazing day of weather at 14 camp; a few hours of bright sun and temperatures warm enough to take off layers, hats, buffs, gloves and even cook out in the open. We got this photo as the weather started to creep back in. Behind us to the left is the headwall, looking quite subtle. Coming down that thing (twice) remains the best oblique workout Iโ€™ve ever had. Wonderful memories, but the best is always yet to come. Iโ€™m in the gorgeous Apennine Mountains today. Itโ€™s amazing, but very different. ๐Ÿ˜‰ GOOD LUCK TO THE TEAMS OUT THERE THIS SEASON! #teamworkmakesthedreamwork

In June of 2018 our team of 3 were fortunate to have an incredible experience on Denali. During our climb one huge advantage we felt we had was the daily weather updates by @chrisdtomer . Each day when we planned our approach to the climb we relied on Chrisโ€™ weather advice over the broadcasted weather forecasts. There were days we would leave camp to the laughs of other teams trudging through deep snow breaking trail but ultimately it was this advice that helped us reach the summit. I would highly recommend Chris and his forecasting service, Iโ€™ll be using him for any big mountain in my future!
My kind of #selfie . May 6 was the second day we could move (the day we landed on the glacier, May 2, we took off right away and camped a little lower than 7,800 ft - and stayed there until a weather break). We hadnโ€™t made it to our planned 9,500 ft #camp when the weather turned - again, common theme on #Denali - so we set up camp ASAP and waited it out for a few days. When there was finally a bit of visibility, we realized we were mighty close to a very big crevasse. Weโ€™d probed so our campsite was safe... just glad neither of us wandered astray while we were outside doing stretches and cold-ass yoga to get the blood flowing. Only four days in my face was already wrecked. Who needs a face anyway? I canโ€™t believe this was a year ago. There have been adventures since and there are plenty more to come, but this one was mighty special: My #motivation on a day when I have a lot of time-sucky medical things going on. ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ #glacierglow #pigtails #๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿป #๐Ÿ—ป #denali2018 #climbalaska #mountainmonday

A different shade and tone from 17,200 feet. Watching this climber above Washburns Thumb for a few minutes slowing up on the West Buttress made me realize I was in the same position the day before. Today I gave another interview for #braininjuryawarenessmonth and was reminded of a few articles I never shared. Both used this photo as the feature photo. This March I have much more information and awareness surrounding my neurological situation than in years past, but I still choose my interviews and words very carefully. I am not a professional veteran and talking about what happened to me and what I live with today doesnโ€™t define me. None of this was easy, most of it was lonely, but it wasnโ€™t enough to break me. Itโ€™s the one thing I hear myself saying over and over again: โ€œDonโ€™t quit. Youโ€™ll get there.โ€ A good analogy to freezing our asses off on mountains. /// Link in bio to one of the articles. I think about this often: I will always consider myself an athlete, not measured by how fast or strong, measured in spirit and the work Iโ€™m willing to put in. Of us, I said, โ€œWe are โ€˜extraโ€™ when it comes to being athletic and unconventional in the way that we do things from a physical standpoint.โ€ That we are, Yeti, and itโ€™s a great source of #motivation for me.
The high cliffs of the West Buttress on Denali. Views from 14k camp were spectacular from the route above to the far away mountains of granite and ice, my a6000 camera captured it all. Hope, fear - this is the fundamental rhythm of mountaineering. Some teams were making the climb to the summit from 14k camp. Skip high camp yet 6,000 feet to climb in the day or night mixed with the cold temps! I miss it. Such a solid adventure ๐Ÿ™Œ Looking forward to the future adventures ๐Ÿ—ป
โ€œSlip inside the eye of your mind, donโ€™t you know you might find, a better place to play. But donโ€™t look back in anger, I heard you say.โ€ Thanks #Oasis . @naomischware looks back down the glacier weโ€™re hauling 247 pounds of gear and food through. Being outside has changed us for the better, maybe it can change you too. Above tree-line, no devices, is where whatโ€™s important rises to the top. Be up there in a few days! Way back to May 22, 2018. // Only two unguided female rope teams summited #Denali in 2018. One, a team of technical climbers who used to guide on the mountain (badasses, no doubt), and us rag-tag, unsponsored, savages. Weโ€™re the first ever team of female #veterans to climb to the top of North America without using a guide - with or without using a guide service! #recordsetter When displaced from my original sports, I chose to pursue #mountaineering in February 2017, trained-around spine surgery- on mountains like Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Rainier and the Rockies, and look what we did. Iโ€™m proud of this accomplishment and the fortitude we demonstrated along the way. I also manage a neurological condition secondary to traumatic brain injury (havenโ€™t woven it into social so everything you see is #halfthestory ). Iโ€™ve set MY bar high for โ€œdisability,โ€ and will continue to do so, even if I have to work twice as hard. Itโ€™s tough, but remember, the only person who can break your spirit is YOU. I got this, you got this. Believe in yourself, drop any dead weight, work for it, and the rest will come. #waybackwednesday #teamwork #summit2018 #ladyvets #denali2018 #makeyourselfproud #worldmentalhealthday2018

HUGS! Rope up, sack up, donโ€™t quit. No hacks. Well, there was a โ€œshortcut;โ€ that time we single-carried from 11k to 14.2k camp to include #motorcyclehill and #windycorner . Of the latter Iโ€™ll never forget saying matter-of-factly, โ€œIโ€™m scared.โ€ Thatโ€™s the kind of info I readily offer up to my climbing partner because we are a team. And I remember the beat we took - her appreciative of my honesty and me surprised by my display of vulnerability - before we smashed that shit. (Why I was scared is a separate story unto itself. Donโ€™t matter for now. ๐Ÿ“ท: @naomischware aka #theyeti )
A bit stressful with six kids but worth every minute! #denali2018 #camping #alaskalife
Regrann from @peppinflight - Reaching the ridge at the top of the West Buttress of #Denali on our #acclimatization day. We were fortunate to have incredible views and moderate wind. 6 days later we would climb the #ridge again just after a massive storm had passed through with no views and waist deep #snow . #ipreview #denali #denali2018 #climbing #mountaineering #rei1440project #climbing_pictures_of_instagram #alaska #alpine #olympus #fitspiration #training #nopainnogain #fitfluential #findyourstrong #positivemood #beastmode #workoutmotivation #fitnessmotivation #fitlife #optoutside #denalinationalpark #instadialy #instagram #insta - #regrann
Regrann from @peppinflight - Absolute trip of a lifetime. So many experiences with 2 amazing friends #climbing the tallest #mountain in North America. @patrick_maguire91 @maviemonaventure #denali2018 To date weโ€™ve raised over $12000 for Mental Health and had amazing support from our trip supporters and sponsors. Feeling so fortunate for this amazing life. - #regrann #denali #alaska #mountaineering
#tbt to 3+ weeks without a shower, post #expedition #crazyhair , slow-roasted skin and a nose and lip blowing flesh bubbles a few hours later. Honestly, after summit day I slacked on sunblock and paid the price. Whatever, glory #๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is forever. The choice to go to Denali in early May was made because while itโ€™s really cold, itโ€™s generally clear. Unfortunately that was not this year. By the time we got to 11,000โ€™ camp, the rangers JUST got to 14,000โ€™ advance camp. The head wall didnโ€™t have any ropes up yet. The weather was fickle. Here you can see the change over a matter of hours, with the 2nd photo being the weather we spent most of our time in. Hopefully next time around we hit it better. And thatโ€™s the thing about life, you have to roll with the punches and adapt. Things donโ€™t always go your way. Learn. Grow. And keep adventuring. . . . . #getoutstayout #denali2018 #denali #gethigher #dowhatyoulove #mountaineering #neverstopexploring #optoutside #keepitwild #welivetoexplore #liveoutdoors #exploremore #coldaf #teampnw #wiser #outdoorresearch
