It's Saturday: time for our next Disney Fact!
Journey into Imagination with Figment is the third version of the Journey into Imagination ride!
The original Journey into Imagination ride opened in 1982 at Epcot, and was an instant success. Riders loved the whimsical theme, the fun characters such as Figment and the Dreamfinder, and the ride's extremely catchy song, One Little Spark. To much protest, in 2000 Journey into Imagination closed for reburbishment, reopening as Journey into Your Imagination. The beloved One Little Spark song was cut from the ride altogether, and Figment only appeared once, on a screen briefly towards the end of the ride. The new ride started with riders being told they have little imagination: "It's a bit empty up there, isn't it?" and at the end of the ride, after going through a series of physical sets, riders were told that they are a "creative genius." The new version of the ride was quite empty and, ironically, used not much imagination. Imagineers had to work with a low budget when creating the new ride, and the ride time was shortened dramatically. In 2002, after just 2 years of operation, Journey into Your Imagination closed to make way for another, higher budget refurbishment. The newest and current version of Journey into Imagination made sure to include Figment in as many scenes as possible, and included the Dreamfinder and the much loved One Little Spark song, making sure to bring back as much of the original ride's charm and imagination. The newest version is called Journey Into Imagination with Figment, and in my opinion, is a must ride at Epcot, despite commonly being overlooked.
