I have been on a noodle kick for a few weeks now. It's the autumnal readying of fat stores to fuel me through the misery of another season of grey somnambulence. That's right, the charms of winter no longer coax me into a state of awe and joy.
The old bones hidden beneath my ample mounds of fat and flesh scream at me for the torture that's to come. I have no choice but to coddle the body, put away those cramped muffin-top inducing skinny jeans, and stock the pantry with my drug of choice, noodles. Rice, egg, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian, and Indian, all lay in wait, consolation for shorter days and longer nights.
While the Starbucks toting chicks of the world heave united in euphoric paroxysm of Pumpkin Spice, my mood in reaction shall melt into a pool of black with a side of noodles. My Chai has been dimmed into commercial mockery, renamed and diluted into a palatable mix for mass acceptance, erased of its origins. So I groan in dismay, knowing full well that my vitriol is futile. I tuck into my noodles to forget the fury; it's the antidote to the loneliness I feel, the boredom of a lack of acid-punk individuality, the cold of sameness.
I am afflicted, always will be by this loneliness, a place that I've come to accept as my mental and culinary home. Winter is Coming, must keep provisions in stock, must not let the darkness of geopolitics infect me into an existential beast.
Noodles, you're my only hope. That and loud ass music and vintage cookbooks.
