And finally, to end my 3 part 90's film binge is none other than the late Tony Scott's epic racing drama DAYS OF THUNDER (1990), starring Tom Cruise, Oscar winners Robert Duvall and Nicole Kidman, Randy Quaid, John C. Reiley and Michael Rooker.
The film tells the story of Cole Trickle, a young racer California who's been recruited to race in NASCAR for the Winston Cup series. However, having only experience racing open wheel cars, Cole struggles to adjust to the rules and logistics of NASCAR racing. With the help of his crew chief Harry Hogges and new love interest Dr. Claire Lewicki, Cole becomes determined to improve on his tactics and win every race so he can make it to the DAYTONA 500 for the Winston Cup.
Now, I only saw this film the first time 5 -6 years ago. And, already having seen TOP GUN, I was curious to how this film would match the epicness and excitement. But... the first time I watched, it literally took my breath away! It did indeed possess the same excitement and energetic feeling that Tony Scott had envisioned for TOP GUN 4 years prior. I mean, when you have the same production team who made Top Gun, which includes director Tony Scott, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and star Tom Cruise, you right away know that it's gonna be a freakin awesome film! Plus, when you have a pretty epic score composed by none other than the great Hans Zimmer, who would go on to score most of Bruckheimer and Scott's future films, then you know it's going to be even more epic!
