🌱Green Juice in Glass Jars🌱. What a day in DC. Rob & I treated ourselves to juices & coffee @fruitive
& I was beyond impressed with the food & the commitment to sustainable practices. ✨If a restaurant cares about the quality of food served, it also has to care about the environment.✨ Our environment NEEDS our care & attention to bring us nutritious, delicious food. Remember: the more delicious, the more nutrient dense (I’m talking real, Whole Foods here 😜).
Rob & I also attended the @rescuedish
food tour, stopping at @teaism_dc
⚡️40% of food is wasted in the US⚡️ & some restaurants are taking steps to decrease that number. These are the restaurants to I support. Check out my stories from yesterday to see more! .
We all must vote in November, but EVERY DAY with EVERY purchase we vote with our dollar. Make it count. It feels good. #happyabby #rescuedish #nofoodwastedc #foodwaste #votewithyourdollar #zerowaste

Some people will not eat food after the use-by or best-before date, while some people will happily still eat it as long as it still looks or smells good (we’re team still eat it!). But, what do these terms mean and how accurate are they?
We found out that it is the manufacturer or packer who decides on the expiry date and that they measure and estimate shelf life in a variety of ways - not all of them accurate, which means that food, which is actually still fine to eat, ends up in landfill because the expiry date says it can no longer be eaten.
And that they have become more about the quality of the food and the manufacturer’s reputation than actual food safety and how long a product can be stored before it has to be eaten.
Should the public be able to decide for themselves when food can and cannot still be eaten? Should best-before dates be better regulated? There must be a better way that stops food that is still good to eat from going to landfill!

Ever since I stopped buying pre packaged veggies, I’ve found it sooo hard to keep them for longer than a few days before they go soft 🙇🏼♀️🙇🏼♀️ Then I came across this little product, @theswag.original
which keeps my veggies fresh for ages! It’s a triple layered cloth bag that you wet, ring out, then store your veggies in! Super easy to use, and low maintenance, with washing only needed every few weeks 🙌🏻 And it thoroughly reduces my food waste, which is something I’ve been trying really hard to work on! 🌏
I think the foxes were very disappointed with the contents of this bag, from one of my lovely neighbours, middle class garbage!! Spread over my front garden and from the looks of it, fresher than some supermarkets #foodwaste #urbanfox

•LOVE A GOOD BARGAIN 🌟• I passed @waitroseandpartners
yesterday on my way home from work last night and picked up a load of bread and rolls that had been marked down 🙌. Perfect for stocking the freezer ❄️. And these rolls were ideal for housing an egg 🥚. Cut a hole into a crusty roll, fill the base with some cooked spinach or mushrooms and crack over an egg, pop in the oven until the white is just cooked and voila! I popped some peppers and courgette on the side as dippers/soldiers. Perfect start to my Sunday morning 🌟.
Freezing bread is one of my most useful kitchen hacks. If you end up throwing bread away after a few days, I recommend freezing half a loaf the day you open it. I literally pop bread from frozen straight into the toaster and you’d have no idea it had been frozen. I freeze bread, rolls, pitta bread, crumpets, bagels...you name it! It’s great for minimising food waste and even better when you’ve run out of bread and can’t be bothered to go and buy some 🙌. Who else does this? And let’s be honest, who loves a bread bargain 🙋♀️?
32 Tips for Reducing Food Waste Every Day | A must read article for food waste reduction in every day life
Food waste is a major issue around the world. Every year, 40 percent of food in the US is not eaten. The EU wastes 100 million tons. Globally, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted. This is a problem for several reasons. About 795 million people, or roughly 11 percent, of the world's population is considered food insecure. Additionally, wasted food means that all the resources that go into creating that food are also wasted.
Here are easy and practical ways you can help reduce food waste.
1/ Make a List
Each week, plan out what you’ll make for your meals, create a shopping list, and stick to it. Going into the store with game plan will prevent you from buying too much food.
2/ Plan Ahead
Think about the week ahead, and what events and obligations you have. If you have plans Tuesday and Thursday, plan accordingly.
3/ Multi-Purpose Ingredients
Plan your meals around how ingredients in meals can work together. If you want to make something with blue cheese one night, make sure another recipe
4/ Go Digital
There are some apps you can use for meal-planning, but old-fashioned pencil and paper work just as well.
5/ Meal-Planning Bonus
Aside from reducing food waste, meal planning will help you save money and eat healthfully.
6/ Expiration Dates
Speaking of expiration dates, use common sense. Expiration dates aren’t federally regulated, so it’s really just a guideline.
7/ Food Check-Ups
Check in on your fresh food daily. If you notice the cherry tomatoes are getting a little wrinkly, reorganize your meals so you can eat them sooner than later.

Squirrels absolutely love pumpkins so don't chuck yours away after Halloween why not put them at the bottom of the garden or take them to your local woods or park? Imagine how many wild animals could be fed with the millions of pumpkins that are thrown away each year. Not just the squirrels but birds hedgehogs badgers and foxes all love pumpkins. Especially this time of year when there is less of an abundance of food for the wildlife.

Tune in 🎶 to get a glimpse behind the façade of one of our favorite restaurants here in Berlin and get inspired by their story. 😍⠀
Anna from @dingsdumsdumplings
lets us in on how she and her friends & co-founders Jillian and Mau came up with the idea of making dumplings 🥟 out of food that would end up being wasted otherwise🥕🥦Theirs is one of those wonderful stories of people who don't want to wait for the government to enact laws to solve a problem but just go and set an example theirselves 👏🏼 Highly encouraging - link in bio 🔝
Today's demo was a field greens salad🥗, including using up some leftovers from the fridge. These included purple cabbage, carrots 🥕, sweet yellow peppers, sliced pear🍐. For the dressing, I concocted it on-the-spot from a few "ugly" mangoes (that I managed to save before they were thrown out, as they were very ripe...but so juicy gooood!)😋....(swipe left to see them)
The result? Every person who tasted the salad fell in love with it😍, especially the dressing. Several people asked where they could buy the salad and dressing, and were a little taken back when I told them they could not as I made them both from scratch. They told me I need to bottle the dressing and they would buy it!😂💖
I intended to make my photos more classy looking by doing more food styling (stay tuned for that!😉), but alas each day my work takes me on a new adventure to meet new people and discover the artist I am, using food as my instruments to create new healthy recipes...constantly.👩🍳💞Talk about going out of your comfort zone...🍅🍏🌶🍊🍇🍄🥥🥦🍍🍆🍌🥔🍉🥒🍎🌽🥑🥜🍒
I am deeply humbled🙏as so many people have and continue to appreciate my work and efforts over the years. Although the majority are not those connected via social media, they are the face to face interactions who I have been blessed to form relationships with and they provide me with honest and instant feedback. No matter...all the people who support me, online and offline, you fill up my heart😉💗 with gratitude and the momentum to continue forging ahead...no matter what!😘For this...I thank you❣

We are four 10th graders striving to make an impact in this world, starting with our home city, Jakarta. We are Kathleen, Meliana, Aileen and Daniela. From our day to day experiences, we noticed an alarmingly increasing number of food waste. This inspired us to create this platform - Feeding Hands, a step sustainability and combatting resource waste.
