A chance encounter with the rare and Critically Endangered Ornate sleeper ray, Electrolux addisoni. SCUBA diving in the Transkei is hit and miss. Strong winds, lots of rivers and high seas combine to form a nexus that produces poor underwater visibility. Despite this, the highly biodiverse coastline is home to many secrets, from ship wrecks to marine species. One such species is the Ornate sleeper ray. This mysterious electric ray is thought to only occur in the Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal. It is seldom seen with very little known about its biology and movement, putting it on the IUCN’s Red List. Getting to follow this beauty around and observe some of its behaviour was an absolute privilege. Perhaps the foreboding conditions are the wild coasts’ means of jealously guarding its treasures. #Marineprotectedarea #Pondoland #mpa #ray #ornate #sleeper #ray #iucn #iucnredlist #FordWildlife
X is for EXTINCT. The last of the Pinta Island Giant Tortoises (a sub-species of Giant Galapagos Tortoise) and a conservation icon, Lonesome George died of unknown but most likely natural causes in 2012. He was believed to be about 100 years old. He was found in the 70's and become a symbol of the Galápagos Islands. His species helped Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution in the 19th century. By the end of the 19th century, most of the Pinta Island Tortoises had been wiped out due to hunting. By the mid-20th century, the species was assumed to be extinct until this single male was discovered on the island in 1971. Over the decades, all attempts at mating Lonesome George were unsuccessful, possibly because his species was not cross-fertile with the other species. These tortoises were once plentiful on the Galapagos islands until the late 19th century, but were later hunted for their meat by sailors and fishermen to the point of extinction. #wwf #IUCN #pintaislandtortoise #Galapagostortoise #lonesomegeorge #elsolitariojorge #ecuador #galapagos #islapinta #pintaisland #extinct #animalawareness #endangeredspecies #wildlifeconservation #saveaspecies #abcconservation
Let’s talk about the Malay Great Argus Pheasant and the complexity of conservation! This handsome fella is classified as NEAR THREATENED due to habitat loss and hunting (classic, amiright). While conservation actions have been proposed, it is a long and rigorous process full of red tape to REALLY start to DO active in-situ conservation. According to the IUCN, conservation sites have been identified, but there’s currently no in-place monitoring or research, and no in-place species management. Unfortunately, the way conservation often unfolds is too little too late - due to legislation/lobbying etc etc etc, population of a species usually becomes DRAMATICALLY low before human intervention takes place. Right or wrong, due to the conservation system it is IMPERATIVE that zoos and aquariums continue to operate so that amazing species, like the Great Argus, survive long enough as a species for conservation actions and legislation to catch up. #vegansofig #veganfortheanimals #mercyforanimals #zooeducation #cubeoftruth #zooscience #zoossavingspecies #anonymousforthevoiceless #vegancommunity #vegansofinsta #crueltyfree #conservation #animalrights #animalwelfare #animalactivist #freegan #greatarguspheasant #birds #iucn #wildlife

On Cat Ba island in Vietnam, you see pictures and drawings of the golden-headed langur of Cat Ba Island or Cat Ba Langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus poliocephalus) everywhere, including travel agencies, hotels and restaurants. These langurs are often referred to as the pride of the island, where they are endemic. However, when you look at it a little bit closer you realise that they can very rarely be seen because according to the last estimations available, there are only 60 individuals left in the wild. This number is dangerously low, and you can add to that the fact that these 60 individuals are divided into multiple smaller groups (sometimes all female groups with no access to males which are on other islands, therefore non-reproducing units) on different islands therefore isolated from each other. As a result, the Cat Ba Langur is classified as Critically Endangered. The main threat on the Cat Ba Langur is poaching and habitat fragmentation. Poaching for the preparation of traditional medicine referred to as “monkey balm” has driven the population from 2,500-2,800 individuals in the 1960s to 53 individuals in 2000. The Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project works for their conservation since 2000. The project focuses on supporting patrolling by rangers to prevent poaching and community conservation education. The population nowadays is approximately 60 individuals. Conservation efforts therefore enable to maintain the population size but not to increase it. Hopefully, the Cat Ba langur has not yet reached the threshold where the population is so small that even if you stop all threats on the species, it cannot recover anymore (referred to as the Allee Effect). Thankfully some people like the team of the Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project focus on their survival, otherwise these beautiful creatures would probably not be part of this world anymore. The Cat Ba Langur picture is not mine. It is a picture of the Endangered Primate Rescue Center. #catbalangur #catbalangurconservationproject #vietnamwildlife #iucn

- Do you know that koalas are huge fan of sleeping : more than 20 hours a day ?! They need more sleep than most animals because eucalyptus leaves contain toxins and are very low in nutrition and high in fibrous matter so they take a large amount of energy to digest. Uroplatus, like this Satanic leaf-tailed gecko (U. phantasticus) are a genus of gecko endemic to mainland Madagascar. The @WWF have listed them on the ‘Top ten most wanted species list’ of animals harvested for the pet trade. Unfortunately, like many other species, harvesting wild individuals to satiate the demand for the Exotic pet trade remains one of the biggest threats to wild populations. Species are being decimated for novelty and money every day and we need to draw the line... To all amateur reptile collectors 🐍🐢🦎. Save some of the money you spend on Herp stuff (I know it’s an expensive hobby) and take a trip to the places where these animals come from, it’s far more fulfilling to see them in the wild and you will get a deeper appreciation for their function in the environment 👍🏼... Some aspects of the Exotic pet trade are an enemy of conservation... I passed my oral (cannot call it dental like you do!!) examination with flying colours... don’t believe me, then have a look yourself!! ‘ The great white pelican (#PelecanusOnocrotalus ) also known as the eastern white pelican, rosy pelican or white pelican is a bird in the pelican family. It breeds from southeastern Europe through Asia and in Africa in swamps and shallow lakes. ' ' The pelican's pouch serves simply as a scoop. As the pelican dips its -bill underwater, the lower bill bows out, creating a large pouch which fills with water and fish. As the bird lifts its head, the pouch contracts, forcing out the water but retaining the fish. This enables it to feed on a large quantity of fish that it requires on a daily basis. It's numbers have reduced due to hunting and reduction in number of water bodies due to #urbanisation and increasing human population. #heavybirds #waterbirds #largestflyingbirds #iucn #nearthreatened #canon_photos #naturephotography #magnificientbirds #delhizoo #nature #birds #fascinatingnature #Birdsofinstagram #instabirds #instanature #instagood #naturegram #photooftheday #coloursofnature #colourfulbirds #splendid_nature #bestbirdshots

Reposted from @wildlifesos - On the occasion of #WorldPangolinDay , let’s spread some awareness about this unique mammal. . . . . Pangolins, also known as ‘scaly anteaters’, are the only #mammals to be completely covered in scales. Their distinct features include long powerful claws that they can dig holes with, a long sticky tongue, that may be longer than their entire bodies at times, and of course the overlapping scales that cover their entire body. Eight species of pangolins have been identified by the #IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) and India is home to two of this species -The Indian pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) and the Chinese pangolin (Manis pentadactyla). Both species are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and the Indian pangolin is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red Data List, whereas, the Chinese pangolin is listed as Critically Endangered. . . #instanature #wildphotography #wildgeography #conservation - #regrann

Happy #WorldPangolinDay everyone! Don’t know what a #pangolin is? That is 👌🏽! Sean here, and as a science illustrator, #biologist , and educator under @thepenandthepangolin I highlight endangered and threatened species in dire need of effective and collaborative #wildlife #conservation work and help to illuminate their existence. 🌍. • • Pangolins are mammals, just like you and I. There are a total of 8 species, all of which are threatened to critically endangered, some close to extinction. The #IUCN @pangolinsg estimated in 2016 that over 1,000,000 #Pangolins had been trafficked (poached from the wild) in the preceding decade; that number has only increased over time. 👎🏽. • • Why? They are consumed for their meat which is considered a luxury throughout much of #China and #EastAsia and for their #scales as well, which are used to “treat” ailments in some traditional Asian medicine. 🐂💩. • • Why “🐂💩”? Their scales are made up of #keratin , the same protein that makes up our fingernails and hair - and it has scientifically proven that pangolin scales are unable to treat any ailments, so their consumption does absolutely nothing. 👏🏽. • • My goal is to raise awareness for these species that commonly are forgotten or are completely unknown to the general public. All 8 species need our help. How can you help? Comment below and ask me let’s start a conversation here on @instagram (that’s step 1). Check out @lady_naturalist incredibly informative stories on Pangolins! I’ll highlight on my stories and profile as well on what YOU can do. Geophis damiani is a critically endangered snake occurring in only one restricted ~75km^2 (47 mi^2) area in Texiguat Wildlife Refuge, Honduras. This species inhabits mid elevation rainforest and cloud forest. Damiani is semi fossorial, meaning it lives semi-primarily underground, occurring under leaf litter, fallen trees, and other debris. This species is threatened by ongoing deforestation for timber and agriculture. Because this snake is limited to a small area of extent undergoing degradation, it has a small population that is critically endangered. -information and photos via iucnredlist.org and Google. #snake #animal #endangered #iucn #honduras #endangeredspecies

W is for Wombat. The Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat is one of the rarest land mammals in the world. It is one of 3 species of Wombat. The other two species being the common wombat and the southern hairy-nosed wombat. The Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat is confined to a section of Epping Forest National Park in central Queensland, with a second population developing in Richard Underwood Nature Refuge near St George. Fossil evidence shows the species once ranged from central NSW to Port Douglas in northern QLD. It is the largest of wombat species and can grow up to a metre long and weigh 40kg. The northern hairy-nosed wombat has longer, more pointed ears than the common wombat, and also has a wider muzzle and softer fur. Despite its cumbersome appearance, the species can actually reach an impressive speed of 40km/h over a short distance. Wombats are nocturnal and only leave the burrow to feed when conditions are ideal. During the winter dry season, the species may be active for up to six hours; in summer, only two hours is necessary due to a larger amount of food. There are an estimated 250 Northern Wombats left in the wild. The Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat's main threats are predation by dingos and dogs, grazing competion with livestock, disease and habitat loss. Its small, highly localised populatiob makes the species especially vulnerable to natural disasters such as drought, floods, and wildfires. #wwf #IUCN #wombat #northernwombat #northernhairynosedwombat #marsupial #australia #queensland #eppingforestnationalpark #richardunderwoodnaturerefuge #stgeorgeqld #portdouglasqld #newsouthwales #animalawareness #endangeredspecies #wildlifeconservation #saveaspecies #abcconservation

This one is much bigger that it seems. #martialeagle #eagleeye #birdsofinstagram #masaimara #kenya #africasafari #no_emptiness #igkenya Martial eagles have been noted as remarkable for their extremely keen eyesight (3.0–3.6 times human acuity), partly due to their eye being nearly as large as a human's eye. Due to this power, they can spot potential prey from a very great distance, having been known to be able to spot prey from as far as 5 to 6 km (3.1 to 3.7 mi) away.🇰🇪 🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂🍂 #safari #africatravel #loveafrica #wildafrica #natureshots #wildlife 🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅 #globelletravels #beautifulmatters #neverstopexploring #travelphotography #passionpassport #instatravel 🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕🏕 #mara #masaimaranationalpark #kenya 🇰🇪 #masai #maasaimara #sunsetporn #magicalkenya @magicalkenya @wildlifeplanet @natgeokenya @kenyawildlifeservice @discoveringkenya @igkenya @ifaw #iucn
On the occasion of #WorldPangolinDay , let’s spread some awareness about this unique mammal. . . . Both species are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and the Indian pangolin is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red Data List, whereas, the Chinese pangolin is listed as Critically Endangered. . . #instanature #wildphotography #wildgeography #conservation

The pangolin, the only survivor of the order of the Pholidota, is currently one of the species most at risk of extinction, if not the most threatened ever. The first of February in Hong Kong 9 tons of flakes of pangolin were recovered !! 9000 kg of flakes of pangolin !!! (To say, an entire adult pangolin weighs about 33 kg). The following week in Sabah, Malaysia, the officers confiscated a load of 30 TONS !!! The flakes are used in traditional Chinese and Vietnamese medicine with the false belief that they can cure arthritis, increase male virility and promote milk production in new mothers, but these flakes are made of the same substance that make our own nails and our hair. Would you ever eat nails and hair to increase your manhood? Follow the @savepangolisofficial profile to show your support and stay informed about the situation of this beautiful animal. On the occasion of world Pangolin Day, we volunteered with @maaty_se_hain_hum for the awareness campaign program , educating the local community, tribal people and young children about pangolins, their ecological role in the forest, their illegal trade system in and out of the country and their fragility in this natural world. To be honest, the tribal people and villagers are more aware about our natural world than we city people are. They know that forests are a way of survival for them and as a result they need to protect it's habitat and wildlife. Volunteering for the first time with this organisation, it was an amazing experience sharing what I love doing the most- working towards the betterment of wildlife. Every small step matters. I hope the Pangolins thrive again in this natural world. ❤️🙏 @maaty_se_hain_hum @sanctuaryasia @pangolin_world . . . . . . . . . . . #worldpangolinday #MaatyforPangolin #mammalconservation #conservation #citizenscience #awarenesscampaign #pangolin #indianwildlife #trafficking #community #communitytraining #iucn #criticallyendangered #pangolinconservation #volunteering #wildlifeconservation #wildlifeofindia #natureinfocus #sanctuaryasia #mammal #himalayanwildlife

Pangolins or scaly ant-eaters are an order of mammals spread across Africa, South and South-East Asia. While they use their keratinous scales for defence, pangolins are equipped with thick, strong fore claws, which they use to rip open termite mounds and ant nests. . 2.16 World Pangolin Day🌍 - To one of the most peculiar mammals on Earth 🌿 . Pangolins play a vital role in biodiversity as they maintain certain insect populations while promoting healthy forests as they forage. With a body almost entirely covered in scales that protect them from predators in the wild, they are certainly defenseless against poachers . There are a total of eight species of pangolins throughout Asia and Africa, of which the Chinese Pangolins are native to Hong Kon山g! We are losing these wonderful creatures due to “bad cultural habits”, as its scales, tongue, skin, and foetus are all believed to have benefits and unproven beneficial properties in traditional medicine. . According to IUCN, pangolins are now the most illegally po61ached and trafficked mammal in the world, with millions of wild pangolins trafficked for trade throughout Asia in the past 10 years. Even now all eight species are listed on CITES’ Appendix II offering the greatest protection legally, the illegal wildlife trade is still flourishing and unless human demand decreases, the species is still in serious trouble! . Join us to END the illegal trade and SAY NO to pangolin products! . --- #Aquameridian #AquaM #WorldPangolinDay2019 #SayNoToPangolins #Pangolins #Environment #SaveTheWorld #SaveThePangolons #Protection #IUCN #Nature #endangeredspecies #HongKong #hkig #Extinction

Pangolins are unique mammals that are covered in hard plate-like scales that they use to protect themselves against predators by curling up into a ball. They are the only mammal wholly covered in scales. There are 8 species of pangolins, all protected under national and international laws. Despite this, pangolins are the World’s most trafficked mammal, as their meat is considered a delicacy and their scales used in traditional medicine in countries like China and Vietnam. An estimated 100,000 pangolins are taken from the wild every year to feed the Asian demand! #worldpangolinday #pangolin #illustration #wildlife #conservation #endangered #iucn #india #asia #africa #digitalart #procreate #ipadpro #applepencil #art #illustrator
