everyone! Don’t know what a #pangolin
is? That is 👌🏽! Sean here, and as a science illustrator, #biologist
, and educator under @thepenandthepangolin
I highlight endangered and threatened species in dire need of effective and collaborative #wildlife #conservation
work and help to illuminate their existence. 🌍.
Pangolins are mammals, just like you and I. There are a total of 8 species, all of which are threatened to critically endangered, some close to extinction. The #IUCN @pangolinsg
estimated in 2016 that over 1,000,000 #Pangolins
had been trafficked (poached from the wild) in the preceding decade; that number has only increased over time. 👎🏽.
Why? They are consumed for their meat which is considered a luxury throughout much of #China
and for their #scales
as well, which are used to “treat” ailments in some traditional Asian medicine. 🐂💩.
Why “🐂💩”? Their scales are made up of #keratin
, the same protein that makes up our fingernails and hair - and it has scientifically proven that pangolin scales are unable to treat any ailments, so their consumption does absolutely nothing. 👏🏽.
My goal is to raise awareness for these species that commonly are forgotten or are completely unknown to the general public. All 8 species need our help. How can you help? Comment below and ask me let’s start a conversation here on @instagram
(that’s step 1). Check out @lady_naturalist
incredibly informative stories on Pangolins! I’ll highlight on my stories and profile as well on what YOU can do. Go check out @savepangolinsofficial
part of the WCN (Wildlife Conservation Network) on their new video that debuted TODAY in collaboration with @coralandoak
! Give #SavePangolins
a follow of the WCN - they are actively networking pangolin #biologists
workers around the #world
to save these lil guys in dire need of our help. Who’s with me? Let’s do our part before they are gone within our lifetime. #pangolinlove
