Cake (the film) - a review 🇵🇰
It has been a while since Pakistani cinema-goers have been treated to a sumptuous family drama like Cake. The family, akin to a mouth-watering dessert, is good at keeping up appearances. They maintain the form of a modern well-to-do family unit and like any sweet tea-party snack, this deception is visually appealing. Upon closer inspection though, it is revealed to the audience that the subtle balance of essential ingredients that make any Cake a satisfying dessert and any family a functional family are missing. Viewers soon realize that this Cake might be poisoned.
A well-executed plotline holds together this multi-tiered desi-baked treat supported by a stellar cast who inject both sweetness and bitterness into this batter. As the Cake is dissected layer by layer, we are introduced to the dark gooey core that is hidden within. A core that consists of unintended consequences, hidden letters, guilt, regret and a love that surpasses reason, time and gastric troubles.
