I hate that we need a day to remind all the women of the world how important we are, how much we’re worth, how much we should be empowered, how much we should stick together, how much we should be cherished and loved and not taken for granted. Every day I live in awe of all the amazing, loving, inspiring women I have the pleasure of knowing. Know that each little injustice, each restriction, each push back, each devastating blow, is just another brick in the wall of female strength we’re building, day by day, year by year. When women and girls stick together we can literally change the world.
Today, I’m asking all of the women in my life, and beyond, not to bite their tongues, or bow their heads, cover their bodies, or shy away from being open and honest and brave in the face of so much bullshit. Suffragettes didn’t smash windows 100 years ago for us to be quiet, for us to be demure and polite in the face of injustice. They smashed windows and threw molotov cocktails so we could live equal lives in society. They imagined a world where we wouldn’t have to crawl, and scratch, scrape, climb, beat and smash our way into the lives we deserve.
I wonder if they thought we’d still be protesting for rights over our bodies, still screaming until our lungs are sore and voices cracked, raw, hoarse, to be viewed as humans and not vessels or sources of pleasure. I’m also asking all women to imagine what they would like to see for their daughters and granddaughters in 100 years time. Picture it, keep it close, wrap it up tight, safe and warm. Protect it. Then fucking fight for it.
