WE DID IT! Negro Bar Channel, a waterway that flows between #Inwood
, has officially been renamed “Joseph Sanford, Jr. Channel.” This body of water traversing @hempstead_town
and New York City will be re-marked on all maps, charts and navigational aids, erasing its offensive and antiquated previous name and now honoring a local hero.
The United States Senate & U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation I championed to honor a local hero, Chief Joseph Sanford Jr. of the Inwood Fire Department…and @realdonaldtrump
signed it into federal law! A special thank you to the Sanford Family, especially Joe's wife, Jackie Sanford, and their daughter Janisha Guzman. We appreciate them sharing their husband and father with us. We will now never forget Junior's memory, service to community or his ultimate sacrifice made in the line of duty made while protecting others.
Glad to partner with United States Senator @chuckschumer
on this important measure; it fights racism in our home town - and next door in the City of New York - by righting a wrong along our border in Inwood, adjacent to @jfkairport.
More importantly, the new federal law honors the legacy of Joe Sanford in perpetuity. I appreciate Senator Schumer's help in seeing this bill through and getting it done.
And special kudos to my former staffer @mattcoleman123
for staying atop this legislation in Washington. Matt’s tenacity not only garnered bipartisan support amongst the New York State congressional delegation, resulting in 19 co-sponsors from across the ideological spectrum, but getting the bill to the House floor for a vote by working with House Leadership, especially Majority Whip @stevescalise
, Majority Leader @repkevinmccarthy
, before Congressional Recess was impressive.
