Lyon President Jean Michel Aulas insists he will allow Nabil Fekir to leave if he so desires, perhaps giving Liverpool encouragement of reviving the deal.
The Reds were all set to sign the French international before ostensibly walking away from the proposed transfer due to concerns over an underlying knee problem.
The club felt that their agreed price of £48million, rising to £53million, was excessive in light of discovering the problem.
Sources in France believe the move could still happen after the World Cup, provided the two clubs can come to a compromise.
While Lyon issued an official statement underlining their expectation that Fekir will lead them into the Champions League next season, Aulas, speaking on French television, suggested the attacker’s future may well lie elsewhere.
The club President purportedly reiterated his desire to keep Fekir off the back of an excellent 2017/18 campaign, but also said he would help him to secure a transfer if he “really wants to leave”.
According to James Pearce, sources close to Liverpool remain non-committal on the matter.
The overall conclusion seems to be that the transfer has a 50% of being resurrected at this present moment.

Steven Gerrard’s spell as Liverpool’s U18s coach has left behind a legacy, believes Academy director Alex Inglethorpe.
The Anfield legend was in charge of the young Reds side for the 2017-18 season before taking up a role as manager of Rangers this summer.
Inglethorpe feels Gerrard has ‘left his mark’ on everyone at the Academy and is confident he’ll go on to prove a success in first-team management.
He told: "Having the opportunity to work with Steven left it's mark, not just on the players but on the staff as well.
You see the qualities that he brings. I think we've been really lucky to have had Steven here.
At best, I knew we would get two or possibly three years. We always knew that he would be wanted and having worked with him I can understand why. He's a natural leader.
He's incredibly dedicated towards achieving what he wants. He's not a man who looks to cut any corners.
He's not someone who wants to be fast-tracked. He was prepared to come into the Academy and commit in the same way as every other coach.
I have no doubt that he's on the pathway to becoming a top manager. All he needs is time and a bit of patience from everybody.
He's in the infancy of his journey but I'm convinced that he will succeed and achieve everything as a manager that he did as a player."

It looks increasingly likely that Liverpool won’t be welcoming Alisson through the doors this summer.
The ECHO understands that the Brazilian goalkeeper has made it clear that he wants to move to Real Madrid and it’s been reported today that those talks could be taking place very soon.
According to Italian daily Corriere dello Sport, a member of Alisson’s representation has pitched up in Rome to talk with the European champions.
Inside Futbol - who cite the Italian source - write:
Talks with Roma have been more difficult and Real Madrid have been unwilling to match their asking price, but according to Italian daily Corriere dello Sport, one of Alisson’s agents has arrived in the European capital to push the deal forward.
The goalkeeper’s entourage have made it clear to Roma that he wants to join Real Madrid and are keen see them get a deal over the line with the European champions as soon as possible.
Real Madrid are expected to put in a new offer worth €60m, which could rise to around €70m based on his performances at the Bernabeu.” Liverpool never made a bid for the Roma goalkeeper and even informed his agents that they would not be making a bid this summer back in March.
