Jurgen Klopp could be eyeing both young defenders Conor Masterson and Nathaniel Phillips as potential solutions to his defensive problems.
The Reds boss faces a huge defensive dilemma after Liverpool confirmed the news that Joel Matip would be missing until February after breaking his collar bone in the win over Napoli on Tuesday evening.
The Liverpool boss could turn to somebody like Fabinho to play in an unfamiliar centre-back position, or Klopp could reconsider his January transfer plans to bring in reinforcements.
It may be, however, that Klopp turns to his young players and hands them the opportunity to show they are capable of filling in during Liverpool's time of need.
Klopp knows all about Nathaniel Phillips and Conor Masterson.
Phillips impressed Klopp massively after being a surprise inclusion on Liverpool's tour of the United States in July. Phillips was initially included to make up the numbers after the World Cup saw Liverpool deprived of some of their international talent. Indeed, the young defender was happy enough just to be there.
But he would grow in stature during the tour and grew in confidence. Phillips showed his development with an accomplished performance in from of 101,000 against Manchester United at the Big House in Michigan.
Klopp was impressed by how he had taken things on board. His distribution has improved drastically and he would establish himself as Liverpool's third choice behind Van Dijk and Gomez when Matip was sidelined and Dejan Lovren was absent.
Conor Masterson trained regularly at Melwood last season and was included on Liverpool's bench for the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City at Anfield.
Masterson is a former captain of LFC U18s team and despite an injury disrupted season himself, he's now fit and is a player Klopp is familiar with.
Whatever Klopp decides to do, both Phillips and Masterson will be in the manager's thoughts as he contemplates a solution to his problems.
Both youngsters have impressed the boss before - now they need to be ready to answer should he come calling. (Liverpool Echo)
