In Syria and other conflict zones, countless doctors put themselves in mortal danger in order to provide care to those who need it. We must defend these doctors from targeted attacks—not just because they provide care, but because these brave professionals are among the most effective and inspiring human rights advocates in the world. So let me just start by saying that the Red Cross and it’s affiliate branches ARE NOT a military organization.
So some of you goes came close in guessing today’s post on the Japanese Red Cross Society and like I said in the opening it is not a military organization but it was born in the fires of war. In 1877 the Satsuma Rebellion broke out on the Southern Japanese island of Kyushū. In response the Government deployed most of its troops available troops as well as a number of policemen and former samurai to put down the uprising. The rebels offered stiff resistance and as a result the government forces suffered heavy casualties. Now since the Imperial Army was less than 10 years old at this point it was still lacking in a few areas needed for a modern army to function effectively. One such area was in the medical corps. As the fighting raged on a Count Sano Tsunetami went before the government and asked if he could form the Hakuaisha (Philanthropic Society). Tsunetami has travelled to Europe in the final years of the Shogunate and had learned of the Red Cross at the Paris Exposition of 1867. Impressed with what he say he now used what he had seen to form the Hakuaisha though many within the government were originally opposed. For the remained of the war the Hakuaisha would help donate funds and medical supplies to the army as well as send some medical personnel to the frontlines. The Hakuaisha continued to exist in this form till 1987 when it was reorganized into the Japanese Red Cross Society after Japan was admitted to the International Committee of the Red Cross. The Japanese Red Cross Society would go on to play a role in the First Sino-Japanese War and the Russo-Japanese War. During both the Russo-Japanese War and the First World War the Japanese Red Cross Society helped care for prisoners of war which helped improve the world view of Japan. During the Second Sino-Japanese War/WW2 the Society tried the best they could to care for injured soldiers and civilians but they were often hindered by the military when it came to treating those on the opposing side. After the war the organization was reorganized and still exists to this day. *More info below.*
Prescribed Minimum Benefits were designed by government to ensure all medical aid members get access to basic care, no matter what plan they’re on. Implemented in 2000, a list of 270 acute, 25 chronic, and some emergency conditions have to be paid from medical schemes’ general risk pools. Instead, some medical aids force members to pay from their own pockets, using up their savings before the year is out. Amid soaring health costs, @devi_hq
investigates the failure of PMBs to help the sickest members of medical aid schemes.

Are you interested in global medicine? ... Did you know you could travel abroad and join medical professionals aiding those in need as a translator, medical assistant, EMT etc?
Attached are some photos from our CSUS MAPS President, where she transcribed, translated and worked as an MA in different refugee camps within Greece.
Want to learn more about global medicine and other extracurricular opportunities? Then join us at our next meeting Tuesday, September 25th 6-8pm Orchard Suite 2 in Union! 😊

"This clinic is important because it keeps us healthy and it supports those who suffer the most in our community." - Israa, pharmacist at the Beit Lahia clinic in Gaza
Anera, in partnership with the Kind Hearted Association, inaugurated the Beit Lahia clinic in the north of Gaza earlier this year. The new building offers dental, medical, laboratory, pediatric, obstetric, and other health services, while providing enough space to accommodate new equipment and machines. The clinic makes health care more accessible for patients by reducing the cost of transportation, medicines, and doctor fees.

A window onto the world. Lush green fields, a jolt of red just inside the frame. The earthquake struck just before noon. Being outside in the fields would have saved you. View from inside a makeshift medical clinic set-up in a newly constructed schoolhouse. One of the few structures left intact. The red hanging in the window is for the disposal of medical waste.
We had to fight to get our medical team in to render aid. Governments don’t always like to acknowledge when they need help. Nepal in 2015. @pureworksfoundation

Claiming "out of pocket" medical expenditure... To qualify for a deduction by SARS, your medical expenditure must have incurred in respect of a registered medical practitioner, nursing home, hospital or pharmacist (for prescription medicine only) and the expenditure was actually incurred by you as the main dependant (not paid by another taxpayer like your spouse). Remember to always retain your proof of payment and the practitioner's invoice / receipt, whether you settled the relevant account via cash or EFT.
If you do not have a medical aid, you cannot claim medical expenses as a tax deduction.

"It was like living afraid 24 hours a day, 7 days a week." That’s how this Syrian mother described life during the past seven years of civil war. "If we wanted to take breakfast, we were afraid. If we were sleeping, we didn’t sleep well because we were afraid all the time. We were hearing bombs...we never had a moment of trust, of peace, of quiet."
This woman’s son, Ahmad, was severely injured in a Syrian army airstrike about four months ago. Now he’s one of the last Syrian patients receiving medical treatment in Israel.

Books and toys sit inside the room that’s been used as a school for young Syrian patients at Ziv Medical Center in Safed, northern Israel, on July 29, 2018. About 160 severely wounded Syrian children have been treated at Ziv since 2013. Now that the Syrian regime has regained control of the country’s southern border region, Israel’s program of medical and humanitarian assistance for Syrians has ended.

THIS ⬆⬆⬆⬆. The insanity of some sort of extremely petty greed. You people who do not think everyone has a human right to health care are the ones who SHOULD be hospitalized for heartdisease and YES ME AND ALL OTHER PEOPLE WITH AVERAGE MORAL AND LOGICAL THINKING WOULD GLADLY PAY FOR YOUR OBVIOUS NEED OF CARE WITH TAXES. YOU ARE WELCOME.
