It’s been many months since his passing, but I can remember the moment I heard as clearly as yesterday. It was an early morning in Chicago, we were In town for a wedding when I got a text from my friend @cjisstudying. I couldn’t believe it at first and still for months after. I wanted to post something to honor him and voice my appreciation like everyone else. But something deeper resonated in me and kept me silent. I thought to myself how could someone who seemingly had everything and lived the kind of life that everyone dreams of would want to end it so gruesomely. It turns out he was just like all of us, with demons and angels alike. It’s ironic that his biggest impact in my life was not his work and writing about food, travel, and the human condition. But acknowledging the stigmas around mental health issues, which I myself have been guilty of. I wish I could have come to that realization in a different way. But I tell others that I’ll probably never get over your passing , and for good reason. *In honor of mental health awareness.* . . When I was 18, I got a Nikon d40 for Christmas. The next few years I traveled everywhere with it. Taking smiling photos as far away as Florence, Italy, or as close as Burlington, Vermont. But my favorite photos were never those destination, wide eyed photos. My favorites were always the portraits or obscured artsy photos I took in my home. My parents would see the photos I took and say that they looked “sad,” and they didn’t understand why I would want to post a smiling photo without teeth, or a photo where I wasn’t smiling at all. But... I loved them more than any other photos because they were REAL. . . I love any photo that can capture true human emotion. Because it’s silly to think we’re all always smiling, or perfectly put together. Sometimes, I feel anxious or confused. Sometimes I get depressed, or angry- and why should those be emotions we have to hide? We’ve gotten so good at covering up what’s really going on inside, and I want to work really hard to break that stigma. I think a lot of depression even STEMS from feeling afraid to show ourselves in the first place. . . Lately I’ve been uncovering some anger that’s been pent up deep inside me, that I’ve suppressed. I’ve allowed people to walk all over me for a lot of my life, and I’ve allowed their judgment to determine how I would portray myself. I always thought I wasn’t allowed to feel upset in these scenarios, because if I did, they’d have another reason to judge me... and only now am I realizing how silly that is. It’s OKAY to be angry. It’s OKAY to be sad, and it’s also OKAY to be happy and joyful. People will judge you either way. To me, it’s just about acknowledging where Everybody is at, and meeting them there. And if somebody can’t meet you, they aren’t the ones that matter. 💜 . If you’re feeling it today, I’d encourage you to post a photo of yourself at your most vulnerable. FEARS & SMELLY SUNFLOWERS . When you try to take a nice photo with a sunflower ... and then realise they smell 🤣🌻 <<< swipe . . So, talking of things that aren’t always as they seem . . I want to talk about fears . . Sometimes we’ve been conditioned with certain fears. Spiders for instance . . Most people have this fear (some worse than others), but a lot of the time we’ve picked it up from others around us during childhood . . I used to be absolutely petrified of the dentist. I’d have small panic attacks & anxiety in the waiting room & had to be sedated to get minor work like a needle in my gum - not scared of needles before you mention my tats . . Maybe it was that dentist horror movie that sparked my fear . . But, I went to the dentist Friday & didn’t even think twice about it. Usually is break out in sweats and had to let them know Im so scared . . But it just didn’t even cross my mind this time - the only thing I can put it down to is that it was in my head & the only thing I’ve changed is meditating almost daily . . As a person who has struggled with anxiety, I know how hard it can be for those who struggle with mental illnesses to talk about how they are feeling to others. And it’s breaking my heart seeing us lose so many amazing young people due to suffering with similar issues. People often think since they can’t physically see the hurt that it’s not there or that you just have to stop thinking about whatever is happening in your head. Unfortunately it’s not that easy and having people calling you weird or crazy does not help. The reality is, even the strongest people deal with mental health issues. 1 in 5 adults in the US experience mental illness in a given year. 1 in 5 youth experience a severe mental disorder at some point in their life. So let’s not ignore the subject anymore. Let’s talk. “Pretending that you’re never weak doesn’t make you strong”. Be real with how you are feeling. Help is out there. And for those who don’t experience anything like this, don’t be that friend that makes someone feel worse about their issues. Be the friend that listens, encourages, and supports. X TRIGGER WARNING X [Sexual harassment/sexual assault/rape] . . . I've stopped counting how often men stepped over my personal boundaries. How often men said disgusting and hurtful things to me, how often I was touched without permission, how many times I got catcalled and was too scared to talk back. How often I thought it's my own fault, how often I regretted staying quiet, how often I cried. How often other women told me the exact same stories. I will never forget the old lady I was taking care of and what she said to me: "We have to endure it. What else can we do, we're just women." I'm so fucking fed up. Everytime a woman is too scared to talk back, changes the side of the street, says no and it's unheard, gets touched without permission, gets raped, gets murdered - it's one time too often. Early bird catches the worm 🐛 and all that. Lately I have been getting up earlier and getting my cardio and training done, rather than going to the gym twice. And I’m loving it. I’m usually not a get up early morning person, especially when it was so cold this morning but it’s so nice not having to go to the gym after work and just being able to go home and get some college work done ✅ I had a girl message me saying how motivating it is to see me so good with training and diet and that is so not the case. Last week was a disaster. Everyday I would have good intentions but had the worst cravings and was super lethargic so I’m just putting it down to a bad week 🤣 But it’s one week now till I go away.. so got to get my head in the game because let’s be honest.. MENTAL HEALTH TALK: Came up with my own little self care excercise a year ago . It involves writing positive affirmations on sticky notes/post its. This along with listing goals , journaling, exercise, drawing, or even resting helps. Most importantly, taking breaks is the essential purpose of these acts of care. I went back to therapy after over 2 years to seek the best care suited for me mentally. I am glad I did. I have been struggling with my anxiety disorders. I decided it was time to get some assistance to regain some self peace, and work on finding my selfworth. It was a huge step for me , and I am proud of myself . There is still more for me to learn about , such as coping with my previous anxiety , and learning about how to deal with my depressive thoughts.(still getting use to the D word as it is fairly new info for me to register). In the past, I felt a sense of denile and not being "sick enough "or that my problems were "insignificant" compared to others struggling with way more problems then I was. I basically thought since I never felt suicidal in my life or didnt have a terminal illness , my problems didn't count . Even though logically outside my anxiety state , I know they do matter. But this is my story. I am an in- progross strong warrior trying to live my authentic truth just as everyone else. Please never feel as if your problems are nothing, they matter You matter. You are loved. You never have to be ashamed in your healing journey. Struggles are part of living. But they do not define us. We define ourselves. Never feel the need to justify anything. You owe no explanation. However you owe yourself some well deserved care and love. 💙
So maybe all that time you spent in front of the TV was not really wasted.📺 Especially considering how cartoons shaped us and our approach towards life as a kid. Everything was possible in that age. We believed we could fly over every problem like the road runner. We couldn't wait to unearth the next monster with the monsters Inc team.👺 We actually ate spinach🤢🙊. But just because we're adults now, doesn't mean that we have to be cynical and unimpressed by what these shows were.💛 Here's a little sneak into what we learned from cartoons. So please don’t judge people because a lot of time breathing is a chore for us. Retaining information and actually doing homework can feel nearly impossible to do because we’re so tired, fatigue and drained. It’s not about getting over it and just doing it, gosh I wish it was as simple as that but it’s much more complex. So when we admire you (friends/peers) for your work ethic & in our utter rut constantly and seemingly annoyingly ask for study tips it’s because our brains our fighting themselves, we don’t mean to be clingy or to offend you. Honestly we just are trying to throw things (ways to cope and study or work ) at the wall seeing what sticks and we need help with that. Mental illness is involuntary, our struggles are much severe than what we show them to be. So if you have a friend with mental illness or are suffering yourself please be patient, you’re doing okay, it’s a process. It’s okay if the people around you, people you call your friends make you feel shitty don’t understand ( leave them and don’t be around people that make you negative) or are impatient when all you need is for them to be there for you. It’s okay if they leave, you will be OKAY. You have yourself. You are so strong, you have survived all your cruel, bad days to date.
