I count this as my warmup meal for being back working in the Med. Yes it’s a brand, just like Nando’s, but generally speaking it’s my fine dining comfort bolt hole wherever I am in the world. HongKong, Bangkok, London, Monaco..... I can always get a seat in front of the kitchen and it’s fairly relaxed but the cooking is generally solid. Having said that, Joel Robuchon London about 4 years ago was the only time in my life that I have felt it necessary to sit and write a letter of complaint (handled very well, we were invited back on the house and very well treated) , and tonight hasn’t been great. The famous Joel Robuchon mash was under seasoned (IMO) enough for me to mention it, the €98 (!!) egg dish was just bland. The cheese plate has come straight from the fridge and three of the five cheeses taste like they have been purchased at Carrefour.
Terrible value at this level. My next two meals at Hostellerie Jerome and Mirazur will probably combine to roughly the same as I wasted at JR Monaco tonight.
Onwards and upwards then. JR Bangkok has never let me down in maybe 10 visits but I don’t think I’ll be back to the Monaco branch in a hurry.
Hostellerie Jerome tomorrow, which I am very excited about as I have been following them for a few years and was delighted to see them get the well deserved second Michelin star this year.
