“Kill the snake of doubt in your soul, crush the worms of fear in your heart, and mountains will move out of your way.” I’ve had a few questions asking to know more about my inspiration and process, especially in creating my latest piece, Heart Cleanse. I read the sentence above written by Kate Seredy recently and immediately had to go to the easel. It’s weird when I get “in the zone” because I’m thinking of a thousand things at once from personal connections and microcosm/macrocosm type thoughts intermingled with simple thoughts like “Hmm, that doesn’t look balanced, it needs more of…” or sometimes I’m just singing.
My process is almost always intuitive in nature. Although I have a system of how I like to bring most of my paintings to life, the end result is always a surprise to me and is different every time. I’m absolutely in love with the feeling I get when I finish a piece, the feeling of “I couldn’t recreate that if I tried.” It’s exhilarating! And it makes me feel overwhelmed with gratitude. It’s like one of my ideas in my head (or let’s be real, I keep them all in a long note on my phone) just somehow comes to life through paint. Or, in other words, “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way —things I had no words for.
