Are you interested in photography? At Richmond National Battlefield Park, we have many different types of volunteers. Did you know you can be a photography volunteer for us? Being a park with 13 units spread across almost 4,000 acres, we need individuals who can go out to all our different sites and capture different parts of the park. Your work will be featured on our social media and possibly our NPS website! If interested, contact claire_murphy@partner.nps.gov. #Photography #FunFactFriday #RNBP #RICH #Volunteer #NPSVIP #VIP #NPS #FindYourPark
Just because Thanksgiving is over doesn't mean we should stop being thankful! The @nationalparkservice is so grateful for their @npsvipnetwork ! Our nation's parks receive almost 285 million visitors each year. Now that's a lot of people! AND it takes a lot of people to help the parks. Over 250,000 Americans volunteer to keep national parks running smoothly. Volunteers give what they can, when they can and help to get the work done- Day after day, season after season, year after year. Richmond National Battlefield Park is especially thankful for our VIPs, from those who volunteer in the visitor centers to those who volunteer with us outdoors. We couldn't do it without you all! Thank you. #GiveThanks #VIP #NPSVIP #Volunteer #NPS #RICH #RNBP #FindYourWhy #FindYourPark
Happy Thanksgiving from the Youth Historians and all of us at Keweenaw National Historical Park! Last week, the #Keweenaw Youth Historians prepared and ate a #Thanksgiving feast made with #IndigenousFoods . We're #grateful to work with our community from near and far! Thanks to the Keweenaw Heritage Center for hosting and all of your help! We're also grateful for the many #volunteers who made it possible. #NPSVIP
Not gonna lie, I haven't been posting much because I'm just having too much fun. My Monday, for instance... was ABSURDLY good. Started the day seeing old co-workers and eating chocolate cake for breakfast. Then went to a presentation by participants in the We.R.More Symposium (Workshop for Ethnic and Racial Minorities in Outdoor Recreation and Education), dreamt up and executed by @sandyy_h. I learned so much, as I'm sure the rest of the *packed house* did. The first faces I saw when I walked in were @josebilingue (@latinooutdoors ) and @teresabaker11 (African American Nature & Parks Experience) and I almost fan girl fainted on the spot. I took pages and pages of notes, but the comment that struck me the most was one about a volunteer project the group participated in. White visitors staring at the people of color working outside in safety vests. As one participant put it, "brown folks in orange vests" has a certain stereotype to it. As much as I try, I'm still just so unaware of all the ways I'm privileged by my skin color. After this enlightening start to the day, we went to El Cap Meadow to test out this incredible 360 degree camera. A few more hours of work, then dinner with some of the nicest and most interesting gals on Earth, sharing laughs and stories and concerns and favorite Christmas songs. My drive home turned into a buzz by El Cap, covered in climbers. Their lights on the wall are spectacular, blending in with the starry sky above. Bing Crosby's Silent Night came on while driving my favorite piece of road between the Valley and El Portal - that canopied section by the Cascades. It was a crisp, clear, dark, quiet night and the song and the environment just made magic. #yosemitenationalpark #nationalparkgeek #yosemitevalley #elcapitan #granite #nature_brilliance #EarthVisuals #artofvisuals #donttakeitforgranite #natureaddict #naturediversity #unlikelyhiker #earth_deluxe #instanaturelover #nature_prefection #allnatureshots #brownpeoplecamping #naturephoto #npsvip #landscape_captures #awesome_earthpix #natureaddict #nationalpark #awesomeearth #latinooutdoors #landscapecaptures #allnatureshots #instanaturelover #landscape_lover #ilovemyjob

Things have been quiet over here because I have been BUSY! As the seasons change they bring many changes for seasonal employees. I'm lucky enough to have landed an internship in the park, and get to live and work here through the winter. πŸ’šπŸžοΈπŸ§— #yosemite #yosemitenationalpark #nationalparkgeek #yosemitevalley #elcapitan #granite #nature_brilliance #EarthVisuals #artofvisuals #donttakeitforgranite #natureaddict #naturediversity #ourplanetdaily #earth_deluxe #instanaturelover #nature_prefection #allnatureshots #unlimitedplanet #naturephoto #npsvip #landscape_captures #awesome_earthpix #natureaddict #nationalpark #awesomeearth #nature_wizards #landscapecaptures #allnatureshots #instanaturelover #landscape_lover

I spent the later part of the day today talking to students at @vaunion1865 about volunteering with Richmond's national parks at their Fall 2018 Volunteer Fair. It's always great hearing that students want to give back to their community! #npscva #volunteer #npsvip #vuu #findyourpark
Every Tuesday, volunteers with @richmond.nps donate 3 hours of their morning to help park staff with outdoor projects. Today, volunteers planted grass plugs in some earthworks at our Fort Harrison unit. The Fort Harrison unit has a little over 7 miles of earthworks spread out within it, along with 5 marked forts, showing the major defenses the Confederacy took to protect their capital-Richmond. Planting grass will help preserve these fortifications made during the Civil War so generations after us will be able to see the same structures we see today. With almost 4,000 acres of land spread out among our 13 Richmond National Battlefield Park sites, we appreciate all the work volunteers put in to help keep the park running smoothly! #npscva #preservation #npsvip #volunteering #outdoors #RNBP #findyourpark
Join the Richmond National Battlefield Park with outdoor projects this fall every TUESDAY from 9:00-12:00pm! Email claire_murphy@partner.nps.gov if interested in attending. #GetOutside #FindYourPark #NPSVIP

Volunteers at Chimborazo Medical Museum are in the process of transcribing 77,000 patient records from microfilm of Confederate soldiers during the Civil War who stayed at Chimborazo Hospital. All information of the soldiers was originally handwritten by clerks who registered the soldiers as they presented themselves at the hospital. ~~~~~~~~~~ The data being collected from the microfilm reels for the Chimborazo patient records project is: Name Rank Company Regiment State Ward being assigned Complaint or illness Date of admission Fate (return to duty, transfer, furlough, desertion, death) Date of fate (when furloughed, transferred or death) Notes (a patient who died could have a note that explains he was very weak when admitted) ~~~~~~~~~~ Once the project is complete, the information will be available to researchers, genealogists, and park staff. The work involves reading from microfilm reels made from the original admission journals and copied onto microfilm by National Archives (as seen in picture) and deciphering 19th century cursive handwriting written with pens dipped in ink. Volunteers have found it very interesting to see the doctors often used Latin terms when diagnosing the patients for their ailments. #NPSVIP #VolunteerProjects #Chimborazo #HospitalRecords #RICH #RVAHistory #HistoryMatters #FindYourPark
This past Saturday, the Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site invited our National Park Service Volunteers-In-Parks to an appreciation picnic at Maggie L. Walker's home. We have many types of volunteers at our parks, including EMT volunteers, Visitor Center volunteers, Resource Management volunteers, and Living History volunteers, who dedicate their time to helping our parks run smoothly and helping visitors meaningfully experience the sites. As a thank you to their dedication to the park service, volunteers were given a full tour of Maggie Walker's home and shown the artifact collection for both parks. Volunteers were also given umbrellas with the NPS VIP logo and given the choice to choose a gift off the table. Both the Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site want to thank all of our volunteers for their service. We couldn't do it without you! #NPSVIP #VIP #Volunteers #RICH #MAWA #ThankYou #Dinner
After standing for over 150 years, the historic wall and headstones surrounding the Hazen Brigade Monument have collected dirt and biological growth. This causes discoloration and damage over time. How long do you think the monument, wall, and headstones would stand without anyone caring for them? ~~~ Join us for our Stones River Service Day on August 18th to learn about and apply preservation methods to help these historic markers stand for another 150 years to come. For information including how to register, visit http://www.nps.gov/stri. #NPSVIP #NPSVolunteer #50Acts4MLK

National volunteer week - "I Volunteer at Lake Mead for a variety of reasons, the first one being a love for the desert and its unique beauty. The second reason would be the people. The rangers I work with and my fellow volunteers are my second family. The last reason and perhaps the most important is the hope, that by volunteering I have in some small way contributed to the future success of this area and helped visitors enjoy and fall in love with the park, as I have." Time to catch up on photos! Here are a few from our day in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. // This park is now almost entirely volunteer run thanks to budget cuts from @therealdonaldtrump 😒I spoke with many of these Volunteers in Parks #NPSVIP and thanked them for the long unpaid hours they're working to keep our parks protected and keep visitors educated. Many of these retirees work long days serving hundreds of visitors in crowded visitor centers and long lines. This park alone receives 2 million visitors a year! VIPs advise hikers on safest trail choices and help visitors to our country feel welcome. Many are also part of the #resistance -- the #altnationalparkservice movement. // Thank you all for your service @hawaiivolcanoesnps ! I'll be returning the favor when I retire... And hopefully I'll get the chance to serve as a park ranger again well before that happens... When our government starts funding our parks again. #mahalo @npsvipnetwork @altusnatparkser #2500fuelpoints

War at the doorstep of Chancellorsville. The meticulous details of this handmade diorama give us a glimpse into the daily life at the home and inn known as Chancellorsville. This building, brought to life by the skilled hands of a volunteer named Sam Ganoung, gave its name to the Battle of Chancellorsville. However, the home burned to the ground during the battle on May 3rd, 1863. Thanks to the volunteer efforts of VIP Sam, visitors can see Chancellorsville as it stood amidst the Wilderness whenever they stop by the Chancellorsville Battlefield Visitor Center. #fredspot #battlefield #nps #volunteer #npsvip #chancellorsville #civilwar #diorama #history
