🔭🔭🔭 Pierre Huyghe has always been best when working with images. At @serpentineuk
, his show « Uumwelt » merge two strands of his work : the recent ecosystems (« Zoodram », « Untilled », « After Alife Ahead ») as well as the older works on film and media. The post-apocalyptic setting of blueish light, muffled Drexciyan beats and a colony of some 10 000 living flies is an impressive one. But the main interest resides in what is shown on the five LED screens. Those images do not ressemble anything we have ever seen before. They are mental images, reconstructed by a deep neural network, perpetually modified by their external parameters. We think we glimpse a dog, a baby, a corpse, the Victory of Samothrace or a Basquiat. Confronted with what we cannot perceive, we delve into the depths of humanity’s visual unconscious.
🦠🦠🦠 « Uumwelt » is a crucial show. Because of its intrinsic qualities, but also because it reveals a generational gap. When Pierre Huyghe thinks about AI, humans and animals, he does so by extending the model of the brain-machine to all living beings and generalizing an informational, Gibsonian model. The machine is still outside us, something we look at on a screen, even if it is the content of our own mind we see flashes of. For someone born with technology, there might have been no images at all. Only bodies, human bodies, that would already contain the synthesis of micro-organisms and technology. The main paradigm then being not information, but biology. Today’s Neuromancer would be a mad plastic surgeon.
