Delhi was hot. Delhi was really, really hot. @caseyhphoto
and I were in the middle of filming scenes in the craziness that is Old Delhi when the afternoon rain clouds ripped wide open, catching us off completely off guard. Joining the mobs running for cover, we ducked under the closest overhang we could find. The entry way to this particular courtyard was no more than 8ft wide, but just wide enough for this rickshaw driver to back his bike rig into the space and take shelter from the rain with a few others.
I don’t speak Hindi, but I’ve always felt a smile is the easiest and most genuine way to open any relationship naturally; no mater how brief your timeline. It’s the common language we all understand and our bullshit meter is incredibly tuned to sniff out any insincerity. Regardless of where I’ve traveled, I found that many locals overwhelm you wanting their picture taken for the sole purpose of drumming up money. While I completely understand the position, if the subject’s primary intention is strictly hustling you, you can’t possibly expect magic to happen. I won’t take the picture because all authenticity is lost.
Isn’t that why we travel?
So yeah, I’m incredibly grateful for this chance encounter we shared, and that he loved his bike seat portrait while we waited for the rain to stop.
I mentioned it above, but in the coming weeks I’ll be releasing more details about the new dance series we were filming… exciting stuff!
