I probably shouldn't be where I am today. My parents had a rough go. They grew up in #abusive
homes out in rural Ga.
My dad was diagnosed with #polio
as an infant and lost the use of one leg. My mom, the eldest child in her house, took on adult responsibilities as a child. She was cooking, cleaning and taking care of her siblings while her parents #worked
My dad basically #rescued
my mom from a ditch she was hiding in while her father was on a rampage.
at 18. He wanted her out of that environment.
I came along a few years later. My #parents
lived in a couple places that I don't remember. One, they lost because they couldn't #afford
My earliest memories are from the wrong side of the #tracks
in Hull, Ga.
They rented a little house beside a field of other tiny houses and crappy looking trailers that the #trains
would disturb as they rolled by.
Mom worked to help Dad get through school at UGA.
As I grew up, I could see they had #opportunities
. But, they also had bad wiring and no tools from childhood that would really #support
them in capitalizing on them.
Money was always a problem no matter how much was earned. And when the #money
is wrong, your relationship will be wrong.
, screaming and yelling leaves a mark. But, the insults and #insecurity
about what you're walking into coming home from school; man, that first moment opening the door... I would pray I could sneak to my room before I was noticed and disappear.
If the #chaos
found me, I was out the door and gone until sun down.
Childhood was part good and part #badhand
. I had to learn to leverage the good parts and appreciate the #lessons
later in life.
I carried #bitterness
for a long time. But, looking back now I see how those experiences shaped me and caused me to be a learner, an #entrepreneur
, and a better man.
Childhood happened for me... not to me. Where I am today is because of my #awareness
of what's past.
