Each year, 15% of the Australian population are hit by hard times and find themselves unable to get the food they need. 🍽️ This can affect anyone - pensioners, families, and children, the employed and the unemployed, in the city and in the country. Some might have suffered illness or abuse, received an unexpected bill, lost an income, a home, or a loved one – but all of them are going through a rough patch where food becomes a discretionary item.
Even more alarming, according to the 2017 Foodbank Hunger Report, 65,000 Australians who need food relief are turned away each month as there simply isn’t enough food to go around. It’s hard to imagine this happening in our privileged country – but it’s impossible to ignore.

We had some leftovers from our last event so we brought them to a food shelter. We are happy to be able to share the tasty veggies from @lgv_frischgemuese

Did you know? Virtually every piece of plastic that was ever made still exists in some shape or form. Shockingly, there are now believed to be more pieces of micro-plastic in the oceans than stars in the Milky Way. Read more on our website, link in bio...

The Sustainable Development goals were a series of 17 world goals created by the United Nations. One of these goals had been No Poverty. By 2030 they hope to eradicate all global poverty, measuring it on people living on less than $1.90 per day. Help end extreme poverty. #endpoverty #sdgs #betterfuture

This week the 35th ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly meeting is taking place at the European Parliament in #Brussels
. Intensive discussions about the nature & the scope of the #ACPEU
relationship after the the expiration of the COTONOU Agreement. Negotiations are currently going on. I hope that the coming framework will adapt to the changing landscape of the partners (the specificities & realities of the ACP group, various enlargements at EU level, the integration and evolution of the African Union etc.).The new framework must draw lessons from 20 years of partnership and avoid duplication of efforts. It is important to move towards a more effective partnership putting in the center of the cooperation the tools that foster self-reliance and #ownership
of development including equitable economic relations, #industrialization
and better management of domestic resources. #SDGs #WorkingLady #gladiatorinasuit #CareerWomen
Fulera, 30, and her daughter Sauda, 14, live in the Upper West region of Ghana.
At 15 years old, she was pounding shea nuts when three men entered the family house to kidnap her. Fulera ran and climbed to the top of a terraced house. The three men threatened her, and being fearful, she climbed down and was taken away by them.
Her husband was around 30 years old and she was 15 when she was forcefully married off by her family.
Currently, Fulera has five children and says life as a young wife and mother was difficult.
Fulera wants a better life for her daughter and for other girls.
This is why she is joining ActionAid Ghana to stop #childmarriage
by engaging with community members and sharing her experience with child marriage.
Marriage by abduction is a disturbing problem in the Upper West region. A survey by ActionAid found that more than 50 girls had been abducted in the region in 2013. More than 160 girls had been abducted between 2012 and 2015.

Challenge: How can we reduce plastic contamination of our land?
Idea: FinalStraw (@_finalstraw_
) : Suck responsibly
The problem with plastic straws is that they take around 200 years to break down and, because the material cannot biodegrade, they remain in the environment for thousands of years clogging landfills, polluting oceans and causing harm to marine life.
FinalStraw is the world’s first collapsible, reusable straw that folds down into a case small enough to fit on a keychain. Created by Emma Cohen and Miles Pepper from Canada, the straw is made from stainless steel and designed to last a lifetime, while the container is made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic. It can be used for both hot and cold drinks, is dishwasher safe and BPA free. To help make it easy to clean it on-the-go, FinalStraw also comes with a handy cleaning squeegee that fits in the case. Each straw comes with a few FinalStraw Ambassador cards, which customers can leave at restaurants to let them know to only serve straws upon request.
According to its creators just one final straw can save 584 straws from entering landfills and oceans every year.

When the entire globe geared up to commemorate World Environment Day by pledging to protect the nature and earth, the growing number of sky-scrappers, devoid of green cover, reflected on the city's skyline.
The open spaces in the city have been vanishing fast, courtesy the concrete giants replacing the lush green old bungalows, grey structures taking over the green cover and the open playgrounds taken over by big apartment complexes. For decades now, the trees have been mercilessly felled to make way for construction of buildings, flyovers or other infrastructure, thus taking a heavy toll on the city's green cover. Trees are being felled in the name of development.
Various factors like unplanned urbanization, rising population and consequent pressure on infrastructure are emerging as concerns for nature lovers and environmentalists.

Regional Feminist Strategy Workshop by Heinrich Böll Stiftung in Nairobi- Earlier today sharing how #TeenagePregnancy
is making us leave so many girls behind. Sustainable development will never be a reality if we keep on subjecting the people to all these conditions that in result makes them further foster an intergenerational cycle of poverty. Teenage Mothers are the latest growing group in the poorest quintile in #Tanzania
and as we advocate for policy and law reforms we need to have more initiatives that address their inclusion and sustenance. We also need to go beyond advocacy and go to the ground! It is precisely where my conviction for making @mamaendeleo
a reality comes from #developmentadvocate #developmentgoals #AdolescentMothers #Empowerment #LeaveNoOneBehind #SDGs

Today IFC CEO Philippe Le Houérou spoke at UN Geneva. Here are a couple of his quotes, in case you missed it: "IFC must – and will – partner more systematically with other organizations, including UN agencies to achieve its goals. We already have done so with @Refugees
in our study on Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp." "Achieving #SDGs
will require $4T/year in developing countries. That’s $48T total before 2030. The world needs greater private sector development impact. We are positioned today to help meet those great needs."
