With warm, crystal clear waters that are rich to marine wildlife, your national park has plenty of options for underwater explorer. #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS101
Over 13,000 acres of American Samoa, from mountain peaks to underwater reefs, make up the National Park of American Samoa which we protect and preserve. Your national park does more than maintain our islands’ land resources. About 4,000 acres of the park are offshore and underwater. #FindYourPark and join us in our efforts to preserve our marine wildlife as well! #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS101

Enjoy their presence, but don't pester them. Avoid the temptation to boat right up to them or follow them at close quarters. Boaters, divers and swimmers should stay at least 100 yards away. #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS101
The Pacific Golden Plover ("tuli") is one of the three different kinds of ("tuli") that is a common visitor here between the months of September and April. It is often seen on the beaches, but even more commonly can be found searching for food on the short grass of the village malae, parks, the golf course, and the airport. #FindYourPark #NPWest #NPS101 #SailiLouPaka

National Park of American Samoa contains 13,500 acres including 9000 acres of land and 4,500 acres of coral reefs and ocean. The park is our only National Park Service system unit south of the equator.
While snorkeling, it's always a pleasure to see one of these beauties on the reef. Giant clams ("faisua") are large, colorful and surprisingly, they are part animal and part “plant”. That's because giant clams, like corals, have plant-like cells (zooxanthellae) that live in their tissues and produce free food for the clams. When a clam opens its shell and spreads out its pretty mantle, it exposes these "solar panels" of zooxanthellae to the sun to make food, like a plant unfolding its leaves. #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS101
Hermit crabs ("uga") use empty snail shells to protect their abdomen and to provide a moist environment for their gills. When threatened, they withdraw quickly into their snail shell with their legs forming a clever protective door. But they sure seem to pay a hefty price for this convenience by having to drag those heavy shells wherever they go. :) #FindYOurPark #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS101
A critical reason to leave baby turtles on the beach is that, THAT EXACT BEACH is very important to them. Baby turtles remember or “imprint on” the beach where they hatched. Like many animals, turtles have little natural magnets in their brains that allow them to home-in on their native beach. #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS100
Parrotfish like to munch on coral polyps to get to the zooxanthellae, which are the tiny algae living inside coral. They digest the coral and turn it into sand. Thank you to the hungry parrotfish for making some of the most beautiful sandy beaches, we see around the world. #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS101

The National Park of American Samoa (NPSA), America’s 50th National Park, is the only park south of the equator. NPSA is located in the South Pacific Ocean about 3,700 km (2,298 mi) southwest of Honolulu, HI and 2,575 km (2,220 mi) northeast of New Zealand. Three park units occur on three islands, the main island of Tutuila and the more remote islands of Ofu and Ta’u. The NPSA marine program was established to provide marine natural resources management and to investigate marine concerns through research and monitoring. The majority of surveys conducted by the marine program are in the Tutuila unit with future expansion in the Ofu and Ta’u units. #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka #NPSWest #NPS100

About one mile southeast of Tutuila's eastern tip is the volcanic island of 'Aunu'u, the smallest inhabited island. It can be reached by boat and explored by foot in a day. #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS100

As fruit eaters, bats are excellent and vital pollinators. Plants rely on the fruit bat to spread its seeds through droppings. A colony of bats ensures that the rainforest remains healthy and full of new trees.#FindYourPark #beautifulAmericanSamoa #NationalParkofAmericanSamoa #Fruitbats #Pe 'a #SailiLouPaka #NPS100 #NPWest
The Samoan culture is Polynesia's oldest. It is believed that the first people on the Samoa Islands came by sea from southwest Asia about 3,000 years ago. Over the centuries, distinct cultural traits emerged that we now call fa'asamoa (fah-ah-SAH-mo-ah). #NationalParkofAmericanSamoa #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka #NPWest #NPS100 #Faasamoa #SamoanCulture #beautifulAmericanSamoa

May have shed a tear when I finally made it to the top. I love being a Park Ranger. But today I am really missing Samoa (these days still hit me hard 3 years later) and all my lovable hooligans. So here's a #tbt featuring both: my hooligans on their very first field trip to the National Park of American Samoa. #FindYourPark #SailiLouPaka

In honor of the National Park Service’s Centennial this year, I’ve done a tribute to American Samoa National Park as part of the @typehike initiative. It's the only NPS location South of the Equator. It’s filled with serene beauty and inspiring cultural traditions. Maybe someday I’ll be able to fly all the way out to their island to visit @npsamericansamoa. Follow @typehike to see all of the other 59 designer’s works. #findyourpark #type #hike #typography #outdoors #NPSCentennial #AmericanSamoa #SailiLouPaka #Samoa #SupplyandDesign
I’m a part to 59 different designers/typographers/creators/cool people that have been designing tributes to a National Park of their choosing in honor of the National Park Service’s Centennial this year.
