The National Park of American Samoa (NPSA), America’s 50th National Park, is the only park south of the equator. NPSA is located in the South Pacific Ocean about 3,700 km (2,298 mi) southwest of Honolulu, HI and 2,575 km (2,220 mi) northeast of New Zealand. Three park units occur on three islands, the main island of Tutuila and the more remote islands of Ofu and Ta’u. The NPSA marine program was established to provide marine natural resources management and to investigate marine concerns through research and monitoring. The majority of surveys conducted by the marine program are in the Tutuila unit with future expansion in the Ofu and Ta’u units.
