☆Hanumanasana (Hanuman's pose aka Monkey Pose) ☆ Hanumanasana, or full front split, is a challenging pose. It takes practice, and possibly some support, to find steadiness and ease in this pose. Be very careful and patient. Some people can do splits right away. Some people take years to develop flexibility. Some people won’t ever achieve this, because every body is different and everyone’s bones are different!! Make sure you’re respecting your body’s limit in the pose and remember Patanjali’s injunction from the Yoga Sutra:"Asana should be steady and comfortable."!!♡ You can use props and variations to find greater stability in the pose and to accommodate varying degrees of flexibility. The block I’m using is placed under my hamstring right at the insertion at the sit bone (ischial tuberosity). With this support, I can ease into a deeper stretch on my breath. Each modification allows me to move deeper into the pose at my pace. Hopefully you can use these techniques to safely deepen your hanumanasana full splits!!♡ ✘ This pose improves flexibility and blood circulation in the legs and hips. It massages the abdominal organs, tones the reproductive system and makes the pelvic area supple. ✘ People who suffer from conditions such as herniated disc, sciatica, hernia and dislocation of the hip joint are strictly advised not to attempt this asana. If you aspire to deepen your yoga practice and explore the depth, sign up for ☆Shafa Yoga teacher training certification program☆ to transform your passion for yoga into something greater!♡ @newsha.saraf @shafayoga #ShafaYoga
I like to create these post because it’s important to know that these crazy asanas do not happen overnight, most of them take months, even years or sometimes never, because every body is different and everyone’s bones are different! A basic understanding of anatomy will help to understand, not every body can do every pose in yoga! But this does not mean that every pose in yoga is dangerous for everybody!!♡ ✘ When we practice asanas we move our joints. ✘ When we move our joints our bones pivot away from each other. ✘ Because the bones are moving apart tissues are stretched. ✘ At first our limits of motion are determined by how much we can stretch. ✘ But the ultimate limit to our range of motion is compression. ✘ Compression is due to the shape of our bones and our Yoga practice will not change where we compress. We are each unique and what may be good for you maybe very dangerous for me. But just because one person may be harmed by a particular pose does not mean that is has no value for others. Due to our unique anatomy and physiological history we have to take care to make sure any yoga posture works and is appropriate for us!!♡ All asanas take work, patience, practice, breathe, fail, falls, focus, passion, love, forgiveness, gratitude and most of all, time. So, remember to be gentle with yourself, respect your limit and find gratitude for your practice, no matter where you are, in this journey. Yoga Asanas are not exercises, but techniques which place the physical body in positions that promote and improve awareness, relaxation, concentration and meditation!!♡ If you aspire to deepen your yoga practice and explore the depth, sign up for ☆Shafa Yoga teacher training certification program☆ to transform your passion for yoga into something greater!!♡ @newsha.saraf @shafayoga #shafayoga
☆Pectoralis Minor Release☆ The pectoralis (pec) minor is a small thick muscle found underneath the pectoralis major near the shoulder. During aerobic activity the pec minor helps to elevate the rib cage for inhalation. It also stabilizes the Scapula during several movements and efforts of the arm. The major vessels serving the arm -☆the brachial plexus, axillary artery and vein☆- cross underneath the pectoralis minor, creating the potential for neurovascular compression by this muscle!!♡ The main symptom from trigger points in the Pectoralis Minor is pain on the frontal aspect of the shoulder. However, in more serious cases, the pain can extend both medially toward the chest, and along the ulnar or internal side of the arm and forearm, all the way to the last three fingers!!♡ If you have any of the symptoms listed below, give this release a try: ✘ Anterior shoulder pain. ✘ Pain in between shoulder blades in upper back. ✘ Pain and/or numbness through the inner arm, inside of elbow, into wrist, hand and 4th (ring finger) and 5th (pinky) fingers. ✘ A sore/tight pec minor can contribute to a rounded shoulder posture as the muscle pulls the shoulder forward. ✘ Difficulty reaching forward and upward. ☆Cervical Radiculopathy (Pinched Nerve)☆ Cervical radiculopathy is the clinical description of pain and/or neurological symptoms resulting from any type of condition that irritates a nerve in the cervical spine (neck)!!♡ When any nerve root in the cervical spine is irritated through compression or inflammation, symptoms of pain, tingling, numbness, and/or weakness can radiate anywhere along that nerve's pathway into the shoulder, arm, and/or hand!!♡ In most cases, cervical radiculopathy responds well to conservative treatment that includes medication and physical therapy!!♡ Typical symptoms of Cervical Radiculopathy include: ✘ Neck pain. ✘ Pain down one or both arms. ✘ Pain in the Scapular (shoulder blade) region. ✘ Neurological signs such as: Numbness and tingling. ✘ Decreased cervical rotation range of motion to the involved side. ➜ DISCLAIMER: All content found on the @shafayoga page, including images, videos or comments are not medical advice or a treatment plan and are intended for general education and demonstration purposes only. ☆Bulging disk vs. Herniated Disk☆ The terms “herniated disc” & “bulging disc”sometimes are used interchangeably, but there are differences between the two conditions. Both conditions affect the intervertebral disc,a spongy, oval-shaped disc that acts as a shock absorber and is located between vertebrae in the spine. Discs cushion the vertebrae, contribute to flexibility and help to protect the spinal cord.Discs are composed of a gel-like center(the nucleus pulposus) and a tough outer layer(the annulus fibrosus)!!♡ As the spine ages, the discs tend to dehydrate and stiffen. A common effect of this dehydration and stiffening is that the disc can become slightly compressed or flattened. As a result, the outer, fibrous portion of the disc may “bulge” into the spinal canal. A bulging disk doesn't always affect the entire perimeter of a disk, but at least a quarter if not half of the disk's circumference is usually affected. Only the outer layer of tough cartilage is involved. A herniated disk, on the other hand, results when a crack in the tough outer layer of cartilage allows some of the softer inner cartilage to protrude out of the disk!!♡ A herniated or bulging disc often is referred to colloquially as a slipped disc and a ruptured disc. No matter what you call them, these conditions can lead to nerve root irritation or compression, which can cause traveling pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness and other disabling symptoms. So,to relieve the back pain, you want to do extension exercises and stretches to help push the disc back into the space in your spine!!♡ ✘DISCLAIMER:All content found on the #shafayoga page, including images, videos or comments are not medical advice or a treatment plan and are intended for general education and demonstration purposes only. They should not be used to self-diagnose or self-treat any health, medical, or physical condition. ☆Eka Pada Koundinyasana II (One Legged Arm Balance)☆ This pose requires core and upper body strength, and open hips, hamstrings and shoulders. It balances the nervous system, strengthens the arms and wrists and develops the sense of physical balance, and once you figure it out, you can transition really beautifully into other postures and other arm balances. But notice what I said, “once you figure it out”. Make sure you’re respecting your body’s limit in the pose. All the yogic activities need guidance, so practice this Asana in under the supervision of an expert person!!♡ Please Note: ✘ People with high blood pressure, heart disease or cerebral thrombosis, and shoulder problems and injuries should not attempt this practice. ✘ This asana requires more coordination than muscular strength. Helpful Tips: ➜ Keep the entire body engage. ➜ If you would like to use a block, place it carefully under your quad. Set the block so it is on its lowest height or mid-level height (you want the block to be sturdy underneath you). You will have to play with the block to get it situated underneath the thigh. ➜ Take some time to get used to the feeling of supporting the front leg on your arm before trying to lift the back leg. ☆Parivritti Janu Sirshasana (Revolved Head to Knee Pose)☆ The Parivritti Janu Sirshasana is a deep, seated twist that stretches the whole body, and strengthens your legs and core. It is an intense powerful stretch and is not easy!! It may take months, even years or sometimes never to achieve, because every body is different and everyone’s bones are different!! Make sure you’re respecting your body’s limit in the pose. All the yogic activities need guidance, so practice all the Asanas in under the supervision of an expert person. If you have a medical history, then concern you doctor before practicing. In early stage you are not able to fully perform this asana, do as much as you can or per your capabilities. This Asana needs lots of practice, so for this, practice other basic stretches!!♡ Note: ✘ This asana should be practised after forward and backward bending asanas. It is a twisting asana with a forward bend. ✘ Pregnant women or people with back complaints should not perform this practice. ✘ This asana prepares the body for long hours of sitting in meditation asanas. ☆Achilles Tendon Stretches☆ The Achilles (or calcaneal) tendon is is the largest tendon in the body. It connects your calf muscles to your heel bone. Activities such as walking, running or jumping places stress on the tendon which can lead to over use, inflammation and small tears. This is called Achilles Tendonitis. Inflammation is the body's natural response to injury or disease, and often causes swelling, pain, or irritation!!♡ If you have any of the symptoms listed below, give this release a try: ✘ Pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon in the morning. ✘ A slight pain appears in the back of the leg after running or exercising and becomes more severe. ✘ Pain is greater when running fast, for a long time, or when climbing stairs. ✘ Swelling that is present throughout the day that worsens with activity. Helpful tips: ➜ In the early stage, rest gives the tendon time to heal and repair itself, it is important to limit painful activities. ➜ In the early stage, an ice pack can be used for 10 min, 3-4 times per day. ➜ Use a heel lift in both shoes during the rest period. This will help decrease some of the stress on the tendon and allow it to calm down quicker!! Stop if this causes pain. ➜ If you have experienced a “pop” in the back of your calf or heel, you may have ruptured your Achilles tendon. See your doctor immediately. ➜ These stretches are safe and very effective to relieve your pain naturally, but it's always good to double check with your doctor. ☆Kindness in the Bowl☆ Kindness comes in many forms, and this one comes in the bowl!!♡ Every day, I think how lucky I am to have found a field where I can simply give my love and receive even more, I feel so blessed and lucky in my life to be able to do this!!♡ When we have established the Shafa Yoga center, our goal was to provide a space that nurtures and supports you on your journey. A place for Holistic Health and Healing! A good place for communication between body and mind! A place to experience the peace, the love, the comfort and the joy! We heve started our journey since 2010, and all these days, we were looking for Shafa in this journey!! Yes, we were looking for Shafa which is an ancient Persian word and literally means “Healing”, “Remedy”, and “Recovery”. It has been an ongoing journey of discovery in search of more answers and ultimately living better, being healthier, and striving for wholeness. But we never imagined that one day this small house would grow to a big supportive family of love!! I appreciate every single one of you who helped us in this direction!! Melissa thank you for your continued support and LOVE!! It means the world to us and your kindness made my day today!! @newsha.saraf @shafayoga #ShafaYoga
☆Padahastasana aka Hand to Feet Pose☆ This wall drill is actually one of my favorites. The wall is a HUGE support, as well as the block. It actually gives you support while allowing you to get deeper into the pose safely!! But, these poses aren’t easy. No pose really is when you’re just learning and trying to figure it out. Most of the Asanas take months, even years or sometimes never, because every body is different and everyone’s bones are different!! PELEASE, always listen to your body as it's telling you what it wants and doesn't want or what hurts and is a bad idea!! So, make sure you’re respecting your body’s limit in the pose. Sometimes we like to give ourself that extra push, but you can definitely pull something here if you do that! So be gentle!! ♡ Helpful tips: ✘ Stand facing the wall, with your toes about eight to 12 inches away from the wall. ✘ Fold from the hips, resting your upper back against the wall. Depending on how flexible your hamstrings are, you might need to move your feet closer to the wall. ✘ Actively press your back into the wall, reaching the top of your head toward the floor. Try to keep a flat spine and the dome out of the upper back. ✘ Enjoy this forward bend for five or more breaths (the longer you stay, the deeper the stretch and improvement). ✘ You can bend your knees as much as you need to. This asana not only does it stretch several different muscle groups all at once, it also can eliminates stress, anxiety and fatigue by energizing the body, and also increases concentration and speeds up metabolism!! But, this asan should not be practiced by people suffering from serious back complaints, sciatica, heart disease, hight blood pressure or abdominal hernia. Cautions for inverted posture apply!!♡ If you aspire to deepen your yoga practice and explore the depth, sign up for ☆Shafa Yoga teacher training certification program☆ to transform your passion for yoga into something greater!!♡ @newsha.saraf @shafayoga #ShafaYoga

☆Shin Splints (Posterior)☆ Shin splints is a general term for pain along the shin and lower leg. There are two types of shin splints: anterior and posterior. The most common is posterior shin splints, which is technically known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS). Posterior shin splints are an inflammation of the tendons that attach to the inner side of the shin bone (Tibia) and causes pain in the inner surface of your shin bone extending down to the arches in your feet. But, shin pain doesn’t always mean you have shin splints. It might be a sign of some other problem, it's always good to double check with your doctor!!♡ If you have any of the symptoms listed below, give this release a try: ✘ A dull ache in the inner part of the lower leg. ✘ Pain with standing or during activity. ✘ Tenderness or soreness along the inner part of the lower leg. ✘ Swelling in the lower leg (usually mild, if present).

☆Quadratus Lumborum☆ The quadratus lumborum (QL) is the deepest abdominal muscle. It’s located in your lower back on either side of the lumbar spine. It starts at your lowest rib and ends at the top of your pelvis. It’s common to have pain here because you use this muscle to sit, stand, and walk!! ♡ Nothing gets a person on their “hands and knees” quicker than active trigger points in the quadratus lumborum muscle. Pain in the QL can be due to overuse, stress, and strain. Sometimes muscles cause pain and stiffness when they’re weak or too tight!! ♡ If you have any of the symptoms listed below, give this release a try: ✘ Deep, aching in the low back, often worse in sitting or standing. ✘ Pain with coughing and sneezing. ✘ Pain rolling to either side when lying on your back. ✘ Pain can refer to the groin and mimic sciatica symptoms. ✘ You may have one side of your pelvis lifted higher than the other. If you'd like to learn more on how we incorporate this technique with yoga, come visit us!! We’d love to see you @shafayoga !!♡ @newsha.saraf #ShafaYoga
Yoga is not about touching your toes, it's about what you learn on the way down...If you are in the Carmel Mountain Road area of sunny ☆#sandiego ☆, we would love to see you on the mat @shafayoga !!♡ @newsha.saraf #ShafaYoga
If you'd like to learn more on how we incorporate this technique with yoga, come visit us!! We’d love to see you @shafayoga !!♡ @newsha.saraf #ShafaYoga
Don’t practice yoga to get better at yoga; practice yoga to get better at living...See you on the mat tomorrow 9:15am for Yoga and start your day buzzing with positive energy and happiness!!♡ @shafayoga #ShafaYoga
☆Neck Stretches for Neck Pain Relief☆ Clearly, neck pain is a common, and troubling problem. Two out of three of us will have neck pain at some time in our lives. Numerous muscles in the cervical region can play a role in neck pain. These muscles are under regular postural strain from daily activities like forward head posture resulting from work at a computer. These muscles may also be injured from traumatic accidents like the whiplash following a car accident!!♡ One of the key muscle groups controlling motion at the junction between the cervical spine and the head is the suboccipital muscle group. This group is composed of four short muscles on each side. While they are very small, trigger points and hypertonicity in these muscles have frequently been associated with numerous neck and head pain complaints!!♡ In addition, the Sternocleidomastoid (or SCM) is a muscle in the neck region that runs obliquely along the side of the neck. This muscle flexes and rotates the head. It also acts as an accessory muscle for inspiration. The SCM is actually the culprit for an incredible amount of pain but it shows up in lots of different areas!!♡ Also, another muscle that plays a major role in most forms of Neck Pain is the Levator Scapulae (Levator Scap). The levator scap influences both neck motion and upper back posture. Every time we raise our shoulders, we engage the levator scapula muscle. Most of us spend hours every day with this muscle engaged, then wonder why our neck and shoulders are so tight!!♡ Neck stretches and regular range of motion exercises are necessary to maintain a normal range of motion in the neck, maintain good posture, and prevent neck injuries!!♡ If you'd like to learn more, come visit us!! We’d love to see you @shafayoga !!♡ @newsha.saraf #ShafaYoga

If you have these symptoms: ✘ Pain between the shoulder blades, especially noticeable at rest. ✘ Rounded-shoulder. ✘ Popping and/or grinding noise when moving the shoulder blade. It could be from active rhomboid trigger points. Mostly desk workers suffer from trouble in this muscle as they spend lots of time working in a round shouldered position. This constantly stretches the muscle and will eventually overload it!!♡ This technique can help with upper back pain, but remember, you know your body best, so ☆listen☆ to it!!♡ If you'd like to learn more on how we incorporate this technique with yoga, come visit us!! We’d love to see you at our studio!!♡ @newsha.saraf @shafayoga #ShafaYoga

☆Gastrocnemius & Soleus Release☆ There are five calf muscles: gastrocnemius, soleus, tibialis posterior, flexor digitorum langus and flexor hallucis longus. The last three are deep inside under the soleus, which is under the gastrocnemius. The gastrocnemius is the outer muscle that gives the calf its bellied shape and it attaches through the Achilles tendon to the heel bone. The gastrocnemius is extremely strong and has the power to lift the entire body weight in jumping, climbing, or descending the stairs or hills!!♡ The calf muscles are constantly working against gravity, preventing you from tilting over. If the calves become dysfunctional, then other body parts, such as knees, inner thighs and lower back, must compensate to keep the body upright. The more the other muscles work, the weaker the calves get become more dysfunctional!!♡ Sometimes stretching your calves is not good enough. When they become extremely inflexible and weak, they get easily overworked and overstretched. Tight calves develop trigger points and then even stretching will not help!!♡ If you have any of the symptoms listed below, give this release a try: ✘Pain on the back of the knee while walking up stairs or up a slope. ✘Pain in the instep region of the foot. ✘Unbearable to place weight on heel. ✘Nocturnal calf pain. ✘Edema of foot and ankle. ↠Apply pressure to trigger point for 15 to 20 seconds and repeat 5 to 10 times. ↠Hold the stretch for 30 to 45 seconds and repeat 2 to 4 times per side. ↠Always listen to your body and find what feels good. Since breathing is something we can control and regulate, it is a useful tool for achieving a relaxed and clear state of mind. A technique I like is ☆the 4-7-8 breathing technique☆(also called the Relaxing Breath)!! Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. For those of you who are contently tight and short of breath, this might be difficult and make you feel a little light-headed. I recommend practicing it several times when you wake up in the morning, several times before bed to feel relaxed, and it stressful situations!! Once you develop this technique by practicing it every day, it will be a very useful tool that you will always have with you!!♡ @newshamobin #ShafaYoga ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡ . . . . #sandiego #sandiego_ca #sandiegoyoga #sdyoga #sandiegofit #sdfit #sandiegofitness #sandiegoliving #sandiegolife #sandiegoblogger #sandiegoevents #sandiegocounty #sandiegogram #sandiegoyogafestival #sandiegolifestyle #yogasandiego #sandiegoyogateacher #sandiegoyogastudio #fitsandiego #sandiegohealthandfitness #sandiegowellness #yogasd #poway #ranchopenasquitos #carmelvalley #encinitas #carlsbad #delmar #lajolla
