Red River Gorge 1am: In the wilderness there is an experience of darkness to be had that is so rare in civilized life. Above is a ceiling of stars no longer muted by city lights, and below a forested wall of darkness not lit by city lights. Unknowing whether near or far, there are predators and poisonous things somewhere
behind that dark wall. Caught in the middle is me, feeling the tension of wanting to look up at the stars the ancients used to worship, and the urge to shine light on every noise searching for the eyes hiding in the night. Once the light goes on night vision fades, and the stars with it. So it’s a choice to see what’s in the dark or the heavens, but not both.

Started in the wind and rain and ended in the beautiful glow of sunlight. Exactly what I needed #solohike #atpeace
It had been almost 3 weeks since my last hike. Between life which included the death of my last grandparent and work which has been extra hectic lately I haven't had the time or energy to really do anything. Yesterday I decided it was time to get back out there. I was planning on doing the Wildwood, Vital Link, Stough loop but ended up befriending a dog and his human and went back down with them. Forever pushing myself after we parted ways I headed up to Stough and hiked to the lookout bringing me to a total of 7.75 miles. No regrets about finally getting my ass off the couch.
Trails emerging from the snow... finally. 🌲 ⛰ ⛺️ 🚲 🎒😎
