When driving along the south coast of Iceland, it is incredible to see how much the landscape changes. .
This photo was taken on the way to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon: first we leave the built-up city of Reykjavík and after driving through a mountain pass, we descend quickly to the lowlands which used to be the seabed. .
Many differently-shaped mountains come into view on our left-hand side while on our right, the flat plains spread out to the horizon, and eventually to the sea.
We pass through quaint villages, cross gentle hills, then are suddenly surrounded by a black, barren landscape that gives the illusion that we have somehow been transported to the moon. .
We see glaciers sparkling white and black as they peek out from behind the mountains, waterfalls cascading from great heights and rough peaks like the ones in this photo towering over us. .
In Iceland it’s not just the destination that will overwhelm you: the whole journey is breathtaking.
