, but this is my motivation every day.
in theaters nationwide and number one in the box office, people have been sharing their own personal stories of struggling with their identity as individuals of Asian heritage living in the United States - a mirror of Rachel’s dilemma in the film as an Asian-American returning to Asia - and why this movie proves just how much #RepresentationMatters
and weakens the excuse that audiences do not respond well to minority lead casts or care about culturally specific stories even further. Hell, I’ve gotten notes as recently as last month suggesting that “no one cares enough”. While I myself am not Chinese, I do come from two other underrepresented groups. One of those two has such a miniscule percentage of representation that it’s grouped under “other” in the Annenberg report on inequality in the film industry. It’s why Pacific Islanders like myself have so much love for the likes of @therock
Not only are they incredible entertainers, they show us what is possible on the world’s largest stage and I very much hope to one day have both of those men produce or act in scripts I’ve written because I believe they are phenomenal. But I also want to have those scripts in the hands of people like @kelmuna
who were the first two #Chamorro
filmmakers I had ever meant to prove to me our people could create works of art for the screen. It won’t be easy. It took twenty-five years to pass between #JoyLuckClub
. But we can continue to prove to those who doubt that we matter wrong by continuing to show up and create and continuing to show up and support the ones that do.
