The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N'Oba N'Edo Ukuakpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II is two years on the #throne
of his fathers. He ascended the throne in a colourful #ceremony
steeped in over a century of #tradition
on 20th October 2016.
He is the traditional #leader
of the Binis, renowned worldwide for our rich cultural heritage and #excellent
craftsmanship most especially in the #art
casting. Most of the bronze masterpieces were pillaged and carted away during the 1897 #British
punitive expedition. (Dem refer to us as primitive, yet our art occupies pride of place in their first tier musuems)See trouble!! 🙄😁 The Benin #Empire
at the height of its dominance was also famous for its architectural & #engineering
prowess. The first explorers marvelled at our #architecture
design. Here's how one of the early explorers described the kingdom..."Benin City's walls were at one point four times larger than the Great Wall of #China
and consumed a hundred more times more materials than the great pyramids of Cheope, #Egypt
." It was estimated that these walls extended for some 16000 sqkm of course dug manually. These walls took an estimated 150 million hours of digging to construct. It was also believed to be the first city to have street lights in the form of bush lamps - using oil & wicker.
So, before #Wakanda
, there was my kingdom, the GREAT BENIN EMPIRE!!😁😁 #Royalty #ProudBiniGirl #Blueblood #Benincity #Architect #History
