Day 3: look beyond looks
I was excited for this one for a variety of reasons and I thought it was going to be a piece of cake. People are naturally visual. There is a never ending supply of gorgeous sites in this world and that includes people, places, things, and animals. People also have amazing talents that create visual beauty of all sorts. I appreciate it as much as the next person and beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.
However, I do struggle when looks determine someone’s worth. It’s amazing what credit and attention people get based on their looks alone, or what they drive or what they wear, etc. This can be good and bad. And the assumptions made off looks alone! Wow. They can be so off base. (I’m totally guilty of this too)
So, in the past I’ve tried to find something physically beautiful about everyone. I’ve had great success. Their eyes, smile, teeth, hair, their style, you name it.
Today, I ‘looked passed looks’ and just tried to watch people ‘being.’ I was genuinely encouraged by the sincere, light hearted, loving interactions between quite a few people and how willing people are to engage. Small actions that were so powerful. However, I also ‘saw’ quite a bit of eye rolling, sarcasm, shaming and questioning of truths, impatience and irritation; (especially among a group of kids, interestingly enough) and I did have to work harder than I thought to look pass that and was surprised on how deep this went.
