Building a habit takes time, which makes it hard to form positive habits when the initial actions are decidedly unpleasant ones (such as waking up extra early or working out every morning). beach life has been good to me. mahalo, hawai’i, for all yr gifts. it was so great to have some sunshine & sand, muddy waterfall adventures, new and old friends. lots of time for thought & reflection while we wandered. . being human is a weird, hard thing we all do. it is a constant learning, uncovering, balancing, growing, shifting — & just when you have found some solid ground, something shifts & you are back at the beginning of the cycle. . but in this knowing there is some solace — that we are all doing this together, & we know the turbulence is simply how it is . even with the wisdom of all those who have come before us, we need our own experience to viscerally feel the lessons we need to learn. & after each lesson, a new one will come . so i guess just have some compassion for yrself, as you keep getting hit with a new wave, & compassion for each other as the shifting sands laugh at our attempts to find a solid ground . thank you for being part of my adventure here in the world, & i hope we can make it a little easier for each other as we go along 🙏💜
Two days ago in my stories I talked about how some of you have been messaging me asking me about discipline...particularly how to stay motivated? And how to stay dedicated to having a daily home practice? I set a challenge for anyone who wants to join me to commit to 7 days, 1 hour a day, on your mat, no distractions, no interruptions - just getting on your mat and being there for at least an hour. There really is no other way to begin! It’s all about setting small goals and achieving them! Discipline and motivation are just like muscles💪 the more you train them the stronger they get. Don’t worry eventually you will be running toward your mat and practice 🏃🏽‍♀️😂 but that will take some time. Start with a week and see if you can just be there on your mat! Whether you are doing a strong physical practice or simply meditating and breathing make it about the time on the mat rather than what you are doing. Those of you doing my Yoga Series One could also practice a different class each day. Please make sure though that at least one of those classes is a Yin class. Preferably two! Full instructions below 👇 This sequence is designed to calm your central nervous system, relax your muscles, reduce stress, anxiety, and tension, while getting you ready for bed. It can also be used mid-day if you are feeling extremely anxious, stressed, fatigued, or burnt out. It will pull you out of the “fight or flight” response, stop your body from pumping catabolic hormones (that break you down), and make you feel better. Share this with someone that could benefit and save for yourself! Let’s get into it 👇 . Forward fold - knees bent, feet at least hips distance apart. You can either place your hands on a chair, the floor, a yoga block, or grab opposite elbows. Eyes soft. Relax the face 15-120 sec . . Table top twist - inhale lengthen spine, exhale twist. Keep the hips as level as possible and gaze at the top hand. Both sides x2, 5-20 seconds each. Feel the twist come from your deep core muscles while the chest and heart open. . . Reverse Table top - five options here! Two for the legs (bent or straight) and three for the head (neutral, chin to chest, or hanging back). Do whatever allows you to open you hips/chest the most and do what’s comfortable. Most of the time I prefer knees bent and chin to chest! 👍🏼 15-60 sec . . Wall butterfly - feet together, back flat against the wall. Let gravity do its thang. Eyes closed. Face soft. Breathe into the stomach and low back, hands can rest gently on knees. 30 sec - 5 min. . Figure 4 - foot on knee, hands either behind the leg or on the shin. Take top knee away from face and flex the foot to protect the knee! Before you switch sides, get a nice hip opener by pressing the foot into the ground and elevate the hips. 20-90 sec hold each side. . . Knees/chin/chest - get into a ball and squeeze every muscle for about 10 seconds. Really focus on contracting everything you can. . . Savasana - expand and relax into your final resting pose. Do not skip this pose! It is very important if you want to keep the magical powers this sequence bestowed upon you 😉
