I can lift my leg!!! This might seem like a very simple accomplishment but for anyone with knee surgery y’all know how big of a deal this is! This is the fastest I’ve ever been able to lift my leg...only 6 days post op!! This whole week I’ve been lifting my leg’s dead weight anytime I needed to get in bed, adjust myself while sitting, or getting in/out of a car. The feeling in my knee when I do this is so odd it’s hard to explain, but I guess I could say it feels disconnected lol. That’s why it takes so much concentration beforehand to get my brain to communicate to my new ACL haha
Ankle Rehab ——- We know the majority of ankle sprains are inversion sprains and the severity of the injury affects the length of recovery. Treatment typically consists of regaining range of motion, gradual strengthening and slowly reintroducing dynamic tasks like jumping and cutting. ——- This post was inspired by one @dr.jacob.harden did a little while ago on graded exposure. The ankle tends to stiffen up after the injury and regaining the ability to into full inversion is important for full recovery. It also helps build up resiliency in the tissue and gets the able comfortable being in inversion. ——- Here are a couple exercises I used in rehab to achieve this goal and a last exercise for working on lateral cutting. Today is #LOVEYOURKNEES day!! I love my knees because they have taught me how to accept and conquer failure. With 5 failed knee surgeries, failure is my life. I used to beat myself up about it, take it offensively and spend long hours by myself sad and in pain. It took me years and lots of maturity to accept my fate instead of being angry with it. Focusing on the POSITIVES during everything has been the biggest emphasis of change for me. Controlling my mindset when I cannot control my knee surgery fate has taught me some of the great lessons I will take with me all of my life. I appreciate each day and everything because I know what it’s like to be in and out of hospitals for years. Don’t ever stop! No matter how hard the road ahead of you is and no matter how many times you fail! Failure is a part of life so choose to see it positively. Growth, learning and progressing all come from failure. Count your blessings every day and appreciate them every day no matter how small they might be or how difficult it is to find a positive. Progress Pic. Left Knee: 2 weeks post op. Stitches came out today and the doctors were very pleased with the healing. They said it looked like a 8-12 week old scar. Also have been working on Range Of Motion. AROM: 0°-100° , AAROM -2°-110°. Still working everyday to gain Full ROM asap. Right Knee: 19 weeks post op. Still hanging in there. Haven't actively worked on it all week due to fatigue of daily use. 49 weeks and 78 physical therapy visits later and I am discharged. 😢 I was transferred to @corey_voges about 2 months post surgery and it was the best thing that could’ve happened. I remember asking him when therapy was going to get easier because each week he kicked my butt! And his response was “if I continue to do my job right, never.” He always challenged me and constantly researched therapeutic interventions that pertained to weightlifting to help me grow stronger and more confident. I remember his first comment after introducing himself, “your leg is kinda small” -ya no shit! 😂 and from there “ol shakey leg” was introduced. Corey, you have made a huge impact on my life, not just physically but mentally as well. You were a part of easily the most challenging seasons I’ve been through and I’m thankful our paths crossed. Last day using the CPM machine! Today I reached my goal of a 100 degree bend after 6 days! I have spent 4-6 hours each day on the machine and honestly I think it’s a life saver. My knee gets so stiff from having to keep it locked in the 0 degree position in my brace all day, so these few hours each day is the only time I feel like I’m getting blood flow and pressure relief in my knee! I have my first follow-up appointment at the doc tomorrow where I will give them back the CPM machine (😟) and move on to physical therapy 3x a week!
Day 5 post-op. I've been off meds for a couple days now, and the pain isn't too bad, but I'm still really lacking my usual energy, and sleeping with a humongo brace on my leg is not super enjoyable. I had my first PT session yesterday, and I got the original, blood-soaked mound of bandaging removed (tmi? sorry) and I'm on track with my recovery with full extension and some flexion. More importantly, I've caught quite a few episodes of #thegreatbritishbakeoff and I've got a fresh copy of this year's #bestamericanshortstories . Also, did you know? Early ACL Rehab ——————————————— ACL injury and surgery is one of the most common injuries in the sports world. Once the pain has minimized and swelling has improved after surgery, good, but controlled movement is necessary to help get the athlete moving. ——————————————— After working on knee extension mobility, swelling reduction, and quad muscle activation, the athlete can begin to start doing loaded, but limited movements. ——————————————— Simple movements such as: Barbell Romanian Deadlifts (RDLs) Single Leg Balance with Ball Toss TRX Assisted Split Squats ——————————————— Barbell RDLs are great for limiting the motion needed to deadlift from the floor, but a great way to train the posterior chain (hamstrings, glutes, etc.) ——————————————— Single leg balance with ball toss or any other neuromuscular re-education training is great to train the trunk, hip, knee, and ankle to maintain single leg stance as well as control position in space. ——————————————— TRX assisted Split Squats are are great way to start introducing single leg training in a controlled environment. Once the athlete can perform for multiple sets/reps and with good technique, we will progress them to bodyweight, then loaded. ——————————————— Every athlete and person is different and some may be able to do these movements early on, but others may not. ACL Reconstruction (ACLR) Rehab Research This month in JOSPT (@JOSPT on Twitter) there are some great research articles about the effects ACL reconstruction has on return to activity. Some long held concepts regarding quadriceps strength deficits and changes in your gait pattern continue to be researched in an effort to make ACL rehab better. Their findings will require further research but some things to try and incorporate in the meantime: ▪️Don't forget about your good leg! When compared to healthy subjects, their were differences in gait pattern on the uninjured side and the surgical side. Make sure you rehab both legs throughout the process! ▪️To compensate for quadriceps weakness, subjects following ACLR often have greater hip extension strength which can alter the gait pattern and alter normal loading of the limb. Fire those quads early and often! ▪️Dynamic knee stability is often impaired after ACLR, working on strengthening the quadriceps at various speeds throughout the range of motion may help to restore normal gait mechanics. *Day 90* Oh why hello, here we are at 3 months post my 2nd ACL recon. And I’m doing little baby drops guys. It’s not much but they are my first dynamic exercises for this rehab and more to come 😍😍 also swipe right for one of my fav squat variation at the moment with cable. . I started to see less of my PT now and having more sessions with an Exercise Physiologist from now on. . The focus for the next 6 weeks will be strengthening the quads, hamstrings and glutes. Things I’m working on: *Start with moderate weight (3 reps in reserve) at low tempo *Build up strength by alternating between more reps and heavier weight *Really focus on my posture, I tend to lean forward heaps to try and protect the knee. Doing more core work to help with that bad habit

ACL Rehab - mid to late stage ——- Almost every time I do a post on ACL rehab, I’ll have at least one person ask “how far along are they?” or “what month can I do this exercise?” The answer is ALWAYS it depends. No two people ever recover the same and these posts are all meant for educational purposes. ——- In the mid to late stages of rehab, the goals are simple but challenging to achieve. The goals are continued strengthening, proprioception/balance, gradual reintroduction of cutting/plyometric/sport specific tasks. While there is a list of other details involved, those are my priority. ——- Here is a higher level reactive cutting exercise I like to use in ACL rehab. She is reacting to the color cone I call out. Additionally, she has to explode against the band and stick her landing. Day 5 ✔️ Yesterday I took my brace off for the first time to take a shower and was shocked by how much my quad had already atrophied. I knew it would be smaller, but the sight of it still shocked me, even though this is my third go around with ACL surgery. I’ve stayed strong this whole week but for some reason I saw my leg and just started crying. Without the comfort of my brace, my leg felt vulnerable and useless, like dead weight attached to my body. Being an athlete, this is a really difficult emotion to deal with. But after my mom and sister (who were kindly helping me bathe) comforted me and reassured me I would get my muscle back in no time, I felt better. With this moment, I also felt a sense of gratitude that my situation is temporary. There are many people out there with permanent physical disabilities that have it a lot tougher than I do. I would say that if one positive thing comes from this journey, it would be the appreciation I have for my overall healthy and functional body. Sometimes it takes a lot of hard work to get back where you need/want to be, but there is beauty in your ability to do so.
And it’s officiall... I am back!! My rehabilitation has come to an end. Even though it will sound silly, for me... this was one of the best experiences in my life. At the beginning I thought the whole world will fell apart because I won’t be able to dance anymore. But with team like this I think I am even stronger and greater than before the injury. Thank you! The FIFA 11+ warm up significantly prevents (non-contact) injuries in football (Soligard T. et al). It reduces injury risk in adult - male & female - soccer players by 30% (Sadigursky et al 2017) when compared to an “usual” warm up. So we know that this program works well, but despite this, only 42% soccer coaches in Germany know that FIFA 11+ program actually exist. Moreover, despite several promotional activities in more than 80 countries and two FIFA Medical Conferences (Zürich 2009, Budapest 2012), so far, FIFA 11+ has been endorsed by only 20 FIFA Member Associations (approximately 10% of all MAs, Bizzini M, Dvorak J, 2015 ). Coaches are not always confident with this program, maybe because of an easy question: “Do player’s performances really get benefits from this kind of exercises?” Recently, two studies reported that FIFA 11+ exercises can trigger core and hip muscles activation and therefore improve neuromuscular control (Nakase J, Inaki A, Mochizuki T, et al). In fact, being compliant with this programme (at least twice a week) results in greater balance, improves 10m sprint, agility, vertical & horizontal jump (Pomares-Noguera et al, 2018).
