Day 6 into ACL reconstruction recovery. First experience with KT Tape. Hoping it will help with some swelling. Thanks @a_denden3
for the advice and YouTube link! Recovery is way harder than I imagined and I’m super anxious to get to PT and at least know what I should be doing. Luckily, I had some visitors last night to keep me occupied for awhile. ☺️ @nrzfri @meghandetweiler
three weeks post op: today is a great day i took my first “steps”... my doctor cleared me to walk only if my brace was locked straight. (i’m not allowed to put weight on a bent knee) IM SO HAPPY HEHEHEHE :>
First Day of Physical Therapy on Day 6 was a challenge as expected. 😖
. *Things to work on: flexion and extension exercises. . *Little to no weight bearing on injured leg due to medial meniscus repair ⛓
. *Major bruising due to the harvest of my harmstring tendon for graft use. *Keep brace on
Here is the 4 week follow-up after surgery on our teenage ski racer that we saw previously at 3 days post-op. She continues to do great and is progressing quickly after Arthroscopic ACL Primary Repair- an innovative new approach to ACL surgery that I have developed for certain types of ACL tears. #savetheacl

One day or day one
Start now or start later
Push play or watch life go by
We have choices every day
I didn’t want to workout this morning, I wanted to do it after work but I knew I would feel sooo much better if I just got it done
I have to save tonight for homework and getting back to all of you
Even though we just started, we have room for you!
What’s your reason for not starting now?
Whatever it is, it’s gonna keep popping up until you do something different
We can’t keep doing the same thing and expecting different results - that’s insanity
So why haven’t you joined me yet?
It’s life changing, I guarantee it 😘😘😘
Prayers and positive vibes appreciated for this guy this morning as he gets a new ACL so that he can get back to skiing next season! ⛷🏥 🙏🏼#aclsurgery #skiing #recovery
writes, “Hi everyone, my name is Alina and I’m 17 years old! I tore my ACL & my meniscus playing softball in May and I’m now 3 weeks out from surgery. The first few days were very rough, but everyday has been uphill so I’m just trying to remain positive and focus on how much I’ve improved! I’ve been in rehab for 2 weeks now and I’m excited to keep making progress! Good luck & best wishes to anyone that ever has to go through this surgery!” #aclrecoveryclub #aclclub #aclrecovery #aclreconstruction #aclsurgery #acl #aclfamily
I'm not the best at progress photos or gym selfies and shit like that.... But let's just enjoy #TransformationTuesday
officially at a weight LESS than I was pre #aclsurgery
13 months ago!! !!! Sorry...not sorry...I'm just a bit excited #BeABeast
(32lbs gone for good).
*1 MONTH POST-OP*
Wow I can’t quite believe how quickly this has come around! It has flown by. The first month has been difficult, but you never got anywhere without anything being hard right?!
I have that mindset now;
I want to come back stronger.
I want to follow and push myself in this process.
I want to do every exercise with quality and with quantity, I don’t want to rush it.
🔶If anyone has any idea what degree of flexion this is then help a girl out 🙋🏻♀️

Cross-education improves quadriceps strength recovery after ACL reconstruction: a randomized controlled trial. Harput et al Knee Surg Sports Traumatol Arthrosc. 2018
This study looked at a group of ACL reconstructed patients that were divided into 3 groups. .
All 3 groups performed the same standardized ACL rehab, but one group was the control group that performed the standardized rehab only. .
The other 2 groups did either 3x per week extra concentric knee extensions on their uninjured leg for 2 months (beginning at 1-month post-op through 3-months post-op) or additional eccentric knee extensions on their uninjured leg 3x per week for 2 months between months 1-3 post-op.
They found that the quads strength for the concentric group was 28% greater compared to the control group. 💪🏼
The eccentric group was 31% greater when compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Concentric and eccentric quadricep strengthening of healthy limbs in early phases of ACL rehabilitation improved post-surgical quadriceps strength recovery of the reconstructed limb.
Pretty crazy stuff and one more reason to work on bilateral strengthening with most of our patients, especially when they're post-op ACL reconstruction.
Do you work on bilateral strengthening? if not, why? If you do, what other studies have you seen that show similar results?

So 1 day short of 6 weeks since my #aclsurgery
, I've chucked the crutches and brace and can now cycle and row. Feels so good being able to move again. Still a long way to go but I'm given'er #aclrecovery
Playing around with handstands! 🤸🏼♀️ About the only gymnastics I can do which doesn’t involve my knee 🤷🏼♀️ 11 weeks post op...
SUPERHERO. Anyone who is dealing with, or who has overcome, a major injury, is a superhero. This long journey is by far the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do. It’s both physically and emotionally draining to the point that sometimes I feel utterly exhausted from it all. As Conor McGregor once said “an injury is not just a process of recovery, it’s a process of discovery”. The patience, commitment and drive that you need to find to deal with the long rehab from knee surgery, whilst fitting in normal life too, is incredible. I am naturally a very impatient person but this type of surgery forces you to slow down because there’s no other option really.... I’m now doing all the rehab for a second time with the knowledge that it is unlikely to be my last surgery.... But, you can only go slow in this process and do what you’re told to do by the experts, and I have some awesome experts supporting me... I’ve never followed instructions as closely as I do those given to me by my physio and so far it’s working. My knee recovery went well after the first surgery (until one of the repairs failed through no fault of my own or my surgeon) and it’s generally feeling good after the second surgery, although it’s very early days and there’s a looooong way still to go....🎢 #recovery #meniscectopy #kneeinjury #sportsinjury #surgery #physio #meniscustear #acl #aclreconstruction #aclsurgery #aclrecovery #aclfamily #kneeprobs #kneeproblems #physiotherapy #fitfam #stability #training #balancetraining #progression #fitness #healthylife #gymlife #workoutmotivation #fitnessmotivation #activelife #sportsrehab #workout #proprioception #healthylife
feels MAGICAL to run after a knee surgery! Never thought I’d be here doing this again! It’s not comfortable but in order for CHANGE & GROW you must come out of your comfort zone. .
I can only get STRONGER And so can this darn knee!!! NO EXCUSES !!!!! Don’t let your minor setbacks STOP YOU , let them CHALLENGE you and make your FIGHT harder ! 💪🏽✨
Top two photos are my “totally shredded” ACL pre-surgery, bottom photo is my replaced ACL using donor tissue. Haven’t posted much about my ACL surgery recovery since Day 6. Between the surgery and my first post-op visit with the surgeon, I had minimal pain and everything was pretty easy. Days 7-10 (today) I’ve had more pain and major achiness in the muscles used to accommodate the way I’ve been walking. As I mentioned in a previous post, when there is any sort of trauma to the knee (surgery counts as trauma), the quadricep muscle “shuts down”. Physical Training helps with many things post-op, but one of the focuses is strengthening the quad - I could barely flex the muscle at all post-op! I’m strengthening every day, but it’s a strange feeling having to learn how to properly walk again and just to build the strength to match your other leg. Like, I can’t climb stairs alternating legs atm. On top of that Friday-Sunday at the shops were insanely busy and I had to take appointments and be on my feet for significant portions of each day. Halfway through the second appt on Friday I took my brace off (it was getting in the way) and pretty much left it off until today - reminder the surgeon technically gave the go-ahead to remove it on 7/12. So while the situation wasn’t ideal, I got through those very difficult 3 days with the help of the wonderful Simply Luxe ladies, my amazing mom and step dad who came down again from Wisconsin to look after William, my awesome dad, and my hubby Peter who is always there to refresh my ice, to remind me to sit down and put my leg up, and will bring me a glass of wine at my beck and call 😍 what a dream boat. 💕💕💕 Today was a particularly grueling PT session, but I biked for 10 mins and fully rotated my leg around forwards and backwards (!!!), can do mini squats, bend to at least 120 degrees, and a host of other activities I would’ve thought impossible at this point. Definitely feeling it today though! 😫 Time to ice + elevate •

I’m officially two weeks post op! After surgery, I couldn’t even get in or out of bed without help. Now I’m about to start weaning off the crutches and I’m seeing improvements in my ROM/ability to walk almost daily. There have been lots of tears and frustrations already, but it just makes me appreciate the little improvements and time spent in nature SO much more. Week three, bring it on. ☀️

ACL Rehab - early strengthening
It’s clear that I am passionate about ACL rehab as I just see too many people not getting the care they deserve. I’ve written about it in the past but I don’t think everyone is qualified to treat ACLs. While some people may find that harsh, ACL rehab is complex. When people don’t get the care they need, they end up never fully recovering and being at risk for tearing their other ACL.
Here is a series of exercise we did in the early strengthening.
1️⃣ Sled Pushes - this is for quad activation as I cue her to push through the floor. Additionally, it’s a great exercise for terminal knee extension.
2️⃣ Lunges - we’re keeping it simple by placing the ACL knee in front which is easier. It requires more stability with the repaired knee in back which occasionally causes pain.
3️⃣ Single leg RDLs - great for hamstring and glute strengthening. Additionally, it’s always a plus anytime I can work on single leg stability.
👍 Tag someone who could use this exercise!
🤷🏼♂️ Questions or comments?
Day 1 is done and I’m already shaking!
But seriously - I’m in love with this program and I can’t wait to see what happens!! Also! Busy people, this program is for YOU! It’s only 4 days a week and 30-40min each day! That’s 1.5 @friends
episodes and .75 @lawandorder.svu
episodes!! Ya with me or not????
Try PT first. Other options could prolog your care and cost your more money.

Post op day 87. To say I had an amazing day would be an understatement. I had my 3 month post op appointment with my surgeon this morning where I was told I can ride my horse, run and both of things can be done braceless! He went on to further say I should ween off it some. If in a crowded situation or with unfamiliar people it is sill recommended as a flag for others to be cautious around me. Then I went to see my therapist and was able to have my first post op run! (My videographer was a little spastic 😂). I ran for 8 minutes! It felt amazing! I may get to try it on a regular treadmill Thursday 🤞🏼🤞🏼This journey has been tough mentally and physically, but it’s also been rewarding. For anyone else who is going through this, I just want you to know, it won’t last forever. You’re not defeated. You will get your life back. Don’t let anyone, especially yourself tell you otherwise. Thank you to my amazing Dr. And thank you to Ft Worth physical therapy, I would never have the success I’m having without all of them. #aclreconstruction #aclsurgery #aclrecoveryclub #quadtendongraft #kneebracesareoptional #runningagain #feelingfantastic #ultrag #imightbesoretomorrow #hardworkpaysoffs #strongmom
after today’s hard and fast workout.
I’ve been getting bored of my usual routine lately so I’ve been mixing things up a little for variety and extra cardio/endurance challenges.
Today I thought I’d do a more CrossFit style workout. Swipe over to see what I did.
Although this workout was difficult, it was quick! I did the whole thing in about 35 mins from start to finish and trust me I was a sweaty exhausted mess! It also helps that it’s super hot in the gym so that added to my sweaty exhaustedness!
Not all your workouts have to be an hour long. You can get an effective, heart pumping workout done in 30 mins. It’s all about the effort you put into it!
Happy Monday everyone!
