my #scoliosis & me ————————— I’ve started seeing some improvements in my posture & my strength. 🙌🏻 For those of you who don’t know I have #scoliosis which you may be able to see slightly in this picture. (My sports bras always tend to sit slightly off to the right 👀) it’s quite common & can be incredibly severe & have a great impact on someone’s life. I noticed I had it when I was 17. So quite late in fact. My dance teacher kept shouting at me that my arm looked weird & I literally couldn’t understand why I couldn’t do it. I then went to a doctor and was diagnosed. After that I realised I was much weaker on that side of my back and found other stuff incredibly difficult like lifting any weight above my head. My hip & abs tended to take the brunt. So ever since then I have constantly worked to make my left side stronger so that it may naturally pull my spine more central. I studied stage combat and gymnastics for 3 years which came with its challenges! 😂 But perseverance is definitely key. It’s an extremely slow process but there is progress. I can now shoulder press quite a lot of weight which I could never do before starting mostly with kettlebells about 5 years ago, The only thing I struggle with now is alignment, in #yoga particularly. And so this is something I am determined to work on. Training my back muscles at least twice a week and stretching everyday is my aim. Although scoliosis has prevented a few problems for me it open lots of doors too. I think with every battle comes lots of positives, so try & take them as a challenge. WALK that WALK🙌🏻 🍁🍂 ______________ So yesterday myself & @douglas_m_rutter decided to walk 2hrs & 39mins to be exact to our car in the rain. ☔️ It was either a huge error or a lovely Sunday walk 😂I have to say half way through I nearly jumped on a bus as my body started to get a little too cold but what kept me going was the cool places we found on route. I don’t know about you but I spend the majority of my time either in a car or on a train and as a result miss so much of the city I live in. Which is mad! The health benefits of a good walk are always a good reason but the views & discoveries of cute canals & little lanes make every step worth it. Put your Paws up 🙌🏼 2 exercises that I work on with @roohamer the trainer and that I find very beneficial when it comes to improving my handstands and backbends 😊 • 1) Shoulder extension and scapular engagement - working on a full range of motion and essential handstand prep. When doing, think about pushing your hands upwards to keep them from dropping and on the retraction draw your elbows in to your side. I’m holding a skipping rope but you can use a band/ pole/ whatever works 🙌🏼 • 2) Shoulder and lat engagement and working on your hollow back needed for all backbends. The rings help you stop loading up your lower back and create space for you to work through your thoracic spine (middle part of your back) 🤸🏽‍♀️ • 3) Assisted pike presses - a real work in progress but doing with Roo means I push through my chest instead of being behind the movement and I maintain correct form throughout 🤸🏽‍♀️ • 4) I love a forward fold and finish all workouts with them - to build strength and flexibility in the spine and to stretch the hips, hamstrings and calves. A year ago I couldn’t get my chest anywhere near my legs so I find the progress very rewarding! Give them a go - I find these exercises get tiring real quick 💙✌🏽 #keepitcore

This is a great progression for the Roll Over, which takes you from the prep exercise (tail bone lifts) to the full exercise, to then incorporating some elements of the Jack Knife. The ball adds a serious adductor (inner thigh) challenge and also tests the core stabilisation. Watching it back it doesn’t look particularly challenging but I’m working like crazy to not drop the ball and my hip extension (in the Jack Knife section) could do with some work. That ball started to feel quite heavy by that point. . Place ball between ankles. . Variation 1: Legs in tabletop. Exhale - sequentially articulate spine through flexion off mat, one vertebra at a time, from tailbone to upper thoracic area, beginning to reach legs overhead. Inhale - sequentially articulate spine down to mat from thoracic to tail. . Variation 2: Continue adding leg extension at the bottom and top. . Variation 3: Full Roll Over exercise. Legs on diagonal as low as imprint can be maintained. Inhale - flex at hips to hinge legs toward torso. Exhale - sequentially articulate spine through flexion off mat, one vertebra at a time, from tailbone to upper thoracic area, reaching legs and ball overhead, parallel to mat. Rest weight across scapulae, not on cervical spine (neck). Inhale - sequentially articulate spine down to mat from thoracic to tail. Exhale - once stable, imprinted spine attained, reach legs out on low diagonal, as low as imprint can be maintained. . Variation 4: Inhale - flex at hips to hinge legs toward torso, then sequentially articulate spine off mat from tailbone to upper thoracic area and reach legs and ball overhead, parallel to mat. Exhale - extend hips, reaching legs and ball to ceiling. Weight remains on upper thoracic area with whole spine somewhat flexed. Inhale - stay and continue reaching toes to ceiling without putting excessive weight on cervical spine (neck). Exhale - maintain extension in hips as much as possible and sequentially articulate spine down to mat, one vertebra at a time, maintaining imprint as legs return to diagonal. . #worldmentalhealthday the power of the mind and its affect on the body, emotions and soul is the most immense thing imaginable- it’s okay to not be okay. ▪️▪️▪️ My personal struggle with mental health comes from a long battle of suppressing my emotions and not knowing how to express them or who I was able to talk about them. Issues of mental health affected the way I saw myself, the way I interacted with others and the relationships I had. I hated myself, I saw only the negatives, I didn’t feel good enough, I didn’t get close to people because I didn’t trust others, I was insecure, vunerable, unable to express my emotions. I smiled but I was screaming on the inside. BUT that all changed. I found my voice, passion, power, confidence through talking, through opening up, through strengthening my mindset and through loving myself and letting others love me. 💖💪🏽 The mindfulme project came from a simple thought of wanting to be able to talk openly about the topics related to health and fitness. it's a safe and empowering project headed by me to enable women to feel strong, confident and empowered and that it's okay to have problems and feel certain ways but it's equally important to talk about them and feel apart of a tribe, who grow together to become body confident, strong mentally, physically And emotionally and learn to practice self love 👊🏽 - this is me.
