You haven’t lived until you’ve ridden a bus with no doors/walls thousands of feet in the air over a mountain cliff in Colombia. 😱 Yesterday I unexpectedly rode a chiva, an open-air public bus, for 4 hours through a tropical mountain from Riosucio to cowboy pueblo Jardin. It’s the only way to get between these towns. It’s also how the local farmers and cowboys get home and drop off mail. The chiva criss-crossed through jungle and breathtaking valleys, all the while playing lively salsa, classical, and tango music.
It was one of the most authentic and real experiences I’ve ever had. A highly underrated - and adventurous - thing to do in Colombia! There were only a few other tourists on the chiva with me, and I felt fortunate to have experienced something few people outside of Colombia ever would. But it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. The roads are very bumpy, the heights are very high, and you are experiencing Colombian jungle 💯%. Still, it’s one of my top highlights from my trip to Colombia so far. Highly recommend it. 👌
