Why at nearly 54 years old am I working on seated box jumps...or jumping at all?
Short answer: It’s challenging, it’s fun and I want to stay strong and active for many more decades.
Longer answer: One of the ways CrossFit evaluates fitness is through your overall proficiency with 10 General Physical Skills: Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance and Accuracy. Most people are very strong in a few, decent in a majority, and very poor in another few. Not having played any sports growing up and believing I just wasn’t athletic, I came to CrossFit in my mid-40s pretty much poor in all these areas. 😬🤦♀️🤷♀️ #truestory #askmycoaches
These seated box jumps hit most of the GP skills in one exercise: Accuracy (anyone else a member of the Scraped Shin Club? 🙋), Balance, Agility, Coordination, Speed (got my feet off the ground faster on the last jump), Power for sure. And improvements here will spill over into my Olympic lifting and other training, bringing improvements there as well.
Fitness for me in my 50s is about being strong, resilient and confident so I can take on life and adventures outside the gym without worrying about my physical capabilities. Challenge, fun and improvement - what’s not to love about that!

I wanted to start out my motivational Monday with that quote as It is something I tell myself from time to time when I think I’m having the WORST day of my life. This picture is an all natural right out of the shower ME. My chin is completely broken out , my hormones are sky rocketing, and my stress level is at an all time HIGH. Life is an exact replica of a rollercoaster (for me) but I never ever tell myself I have It worst than somebody else. More than likely I shut my breakdown down and tell myself someone else is probably going through something a lot worst than me. I try to imagine my life as Planet Fitness. Judgement free zone. You don’t know what people are truly going through so don’t judge them just because they aren’t wearing makeup or wear oversized clothing with bed head to school. WE ALL HAVE BAD DAYS!! I don’t really know where this caption is going but I really, all in all, wanted to share with you guys that even though I may seem happy go lucky courtney 24/7 (I really try to be most of the time) I’m not. I haven’t been to the gym in a week and you know what? That’s okay! My body and health needed that break and I cannot wait to get back in there! Overall, be a walking PF and remind yourself that we all are going through something in life, most people with the biggest smile, are going through the most. Be a good person and smile 🖤

Starting new phase of training this week for the next 4 weeks. Woking my to have bigger and stronger muscles while still looking to increase power. Rebuilding opportunity means to try new types of training. What most don’t realize is muscle size is not indicative of muscle strength. The training for each is different having different training variables. Strength is more from a neurological response and hypertrophy (increase in muscle size) is more of an intramuscular process. I don’t really know where to begin. On one hand 🤚 I want to talk about everything that went wrong. Then I want talk about how thankful I am. So I am going with what my plan was. I wanted to pop the Mary cherry 🍒 I want to earn that marathoner title. So realistic goals went: 1) Finish the marathon 2) sub 5 finish 3) 4:30 finish 4) 4 hour finish 5) ULTIMATE BQ. When I went to get out of bed my back was catching like it did when I bulged a disc. I managed to roll out of bed on my side. (No idea what I did during the training to cause it) started my routine. As long as I didn’t bend at the hip I was fine... told the husband unless I die, I am crossing that finish line ( if does happen please carry me across the finish line 😜) so I start with my RBF by my side. Mile one ☝️ the back was in immediate pain. I literally until I found a speed where the pain was less. Allie and I made a great team, but alas 6 ish miles we split. She was in perfect pace to qualify for pikes peak. I felt strong for both of us. it was amazing 😉 then mile 9 came. 1 runner in front of me, 2 runners coming up behind and what do they do when they have the whole road to go around, they go between me and the front runner. I lost my front line of sight and not good. Right ankle twisted and left knee banged up. So now I was in constant pain in my lower left back, left knee and right ankle. I needed Tylenol. I was out. I NEVER once wanted to quit. I walked when I needed and I pushed on. Again finding the pace that the pain was tolerable. I struggled bused until 20z. Then I heard it’s just a 10 k. So got the inhaler out and refused one more time. I was determined. People were dropping like flies. 39 average degree weather 20 mph winds from the north. Dang it... I didn’t train to quit this. I pushed the hardest I have ever done in my life. Joscelynn and I told each other see you at the finish line and I will run with you mommy. I had to meet my little girl. She was waiting in this crap for me!! I was bummed ☹️ I didn’t make 5 hours. There will be more. If I functioned off of motivation, nothing would get done. I’d have tons of started goals, but unfinished. Motivation is a myth. Motivation doesn’t last. Motivation is like putting water in your car for gas. Discipline is the secret. Discipline is the key. Discipline is the magic.
Holidays are coming!! Who is excited? We definitely are! 🎃 🦃🎄 I think we all know that with the holidays comes treats, parties, indulging... the temptations are everywhere! And in addition to that, we are busier doing and going more and sleeping less (and let’s not forget it’s flu season! The deck can really be stacked against us!) I am including this picture of myself 🙈 to remind ME how far I’ve come this year and not to let a few holidays or treats get in the way of my goal of better health.
This is a reminder to myself not to let the holidays become an excuse to slide back into bad habits. Transformation is an overused term which is often times taken out of context. It’s not like you wake up one morning and suddenly you are the person that you want to be. It takes work, time, patience, and perseverance. There is about a 7 year difference between these two photos. It took me too long to realize that I had to earn it. I’m miles ahead of where I was, but I am constantly playing catch up, but it’s important to keep moving forward. I couldn’t lunge. Tonight I did 1.5 min of weighted lunges 3 times in a row (only small part of my leg workout tonight). IT WAS SO HARD WHEN I STARTED.
Couldn’t breathe. Wasn’t fun. Thought I was going to die. Didn’t think I’d ever be able to lose weight.
BUT... I kept showing up. I kept eating smaller portions. I kept taking AdvoCare (🙌💥). I kept working out (just 23 min a few times a week). I kept making healthier choices. I kept believing. I wasn’t quitting on myself for once. Now life is so different! I’m more me than ever and Weston and Dustin have THE BEST ME!
Been about a month of being back to working out after my minor surgery. I feel pretty good! The first two weeks were really tough. More mentally than physically. Having to reduce weight and intensity was a little discouraging. I mentioned at the time it was a #Rebuilding
opportunity. And it quite literally is. Now that the first month is over starting the next month in the rebuilding process next week and I’m pretty excited! Confident I will be stronger than I was prior to the injury by the end of the year. The injury put things into perspective financially, how I’m spending my time, and my potential.
