Took Jasper's twists down tonight to let her hair breathe before I wash and re-twist it tomorrow. As I'm taking it down, she's watching a YouTube video of a little girl with two long, sleek ponytails. Jasper tells me, "Mommy, I want two long ponytails like her." To which I reply, "Mommy's not doing anything to your hair right now." Anyway, I finish and tell her I'm all done. Her hair is a natural afro. She touches her hair, makes a sad face, and says, "But it's too messy. It's not pretty." I'm like, "Girl, your hair so pretty!" She kept telling me it wasn't. So, I said, "Let me take a picture and show you." I grabbed a bow, fluffed it out, and told her to smile. "Girl, you and your hair are gorgeous! Look at this!" I tell her.
She smiles and says, "I love it, mommy!" Her brothers, who love it when I let her wear her hair out, came in unaware of our exchange, telling her how pretty she looked.
Chile, now can't nobody touch her hair!
No offense to anyone, but I refuse to raise a daughter who thinks only straight, long hair is beautiful. Those kinks are gorgeous, too! #healthyselfesteem #naturalhair #naturalhairkids #prettybrowngirl #afro #kinksandcurls
