#WaimeaValley is a place where #conservation of #naturalresources and culture go hand in hand. From helping restore our native forests through Hanai Aina #volutneer days or maintaining the endangered #alaeula habitat. Careful monitoring and restoration of #native ecosystems within the #ahupua ’a demonstrates how cultural uses and gathering can encourage #stewardship from within the #localcommunity #themoreyouknow #malamaaina #plantnatives #hawaii #northshore #oahu
This week the Haleakalā National Park Cultural Resource Team is highlighting a special park project that we worked on in cooperation with the Kīpahulu District staff and community, Interpretation Division, and subject matter experts throughout Maui! Ten new waysides have been installed in Kīpahulu District. The waysides interpret the history of the district, and the unique cultural and natural resources of Kīpahulu. This week we are featuring the 4 new waysides that can be found in front of the Kīpahulu Visitor Center. Topics include the ahupua‘a land management system, the effects of the 1848 Mahele (divide), which privatized land throughout Hawai‘i, the Kīpahulu Valley Biological Reserve, and the endemic Hawaiian stream creatures that live in the Palikea and Pīpīwai streams of ‘Ohe‘o Gulch. Next week we will preview the 6 waysides that can be found along Kūloa Point Trail. We hope you can take advantage of the park’s fee free day this Monday January 15, 2018 in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and check out the new signage! Visiting students are shaping and sanding the pohaku (stone) into a ko'i shape (adze head) an old #Hawaiian tool using pohaku as a sanding base along with water and sand for an even more effective method. This activity is part of the #culturaleducation #ahupua 'a program which teaches #students about the traditional living system in old #Hawaii and some of the different tools and plants that were used in an ahupua'a. Waimea Valley is an ahupua’a. The definition of an ahupua'a is a section of land that runs from the mountains to the sea, that contains all of the resources needed for survival. Find out more about the cultural education programs at #waimeavalley for students preK to high school, for teachers and seniors on our website. #hawaiihappenshere #northshore #oahu #hawaiianculture #preserve

As much as I love to travel and experience different cultures it is rejuvenating to embrace my own again. The beauty of these islands are reminders of how blessed I am to call this place my home. • • • Mahalo nui to my sister @tesiamelani for sharing a day in her life with my niece and nephew. #Wili -WilIi Wood Go. 🌳 Honored to have spent the last week with @zaniac1 on his #Home Ground in #WestMaui , including up in the #AKA section of his own #Ahupua `a , which just happens to be the largest remaining forest of Wili-Willi (Hawaiian Balsa) trees anywhere in Hawaii. 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳 Wili-Willi is a rare wood that was reserved for use by the chiefs for their traditional #OLO surfboards, and the #Alaia style board Zane is holding is his personal board that he shaped, from a downed Wili-Willi tree gathered right behind his house. 🏡 And like every other board (Surf, SUP, Foil) we watched him surf this week, he ripped on this one too. 🌊 #deepbluelife #ECOBOARD

#ahupua 'a. An ahupua`a was a wedge-shaped area of land running from the uplands to the sea, following the natural boundaries of the watershed. Each ahupua`a contained the resources the community needed, from fish and salt, to fertile land for farming taro or sweet potato, to koa and other trees growing in upslope areas. Villagers from the coast traded fish for other foods or for wood to build canoes and houses. Specialized knowledge and resources peculiar to a small area were also shared among ahupua`a. #sustainability #uhmc #maui #hawaii #mauifarmers #nativehawaiian #foodinnovator
To roll out #moolelomonday , I thought iʻd start with #mystory . I grew up in the ahupuaʻa of #Kailua with my toes in the mud, romping around the weatlands of #Kawainui marsh. I liked to get dirty and to explore! I was fascinated by the mo‘olelo of the lepo ‘ai ‘ia - the edible mud of Kawainui – that fed Kamehameha’s brave band of warriors during the battle of Nu‘uanu. That lepo was said to be as delicious as the freshest and sweetest paʻiʻai I had ever tasted!!! So, obviously I had to check this out for myself!! …. you can just imagine where that lead, a little girl….strategically tasting mud! I was a #scientist from day one – it is who I am, it is how I connected with my place - by #observing and #experimenting . When I learned Kawainui used to be #fishpond (!!!), I started thinking about the function of the marsh in the context of the entire #ahupua ’a #ecosystem , how it changed over time and how we as humans influenced it. It was that line of inquiry that shaped my career trajectory. Asking questions and finding answers to #protectresources that were so precious to me. I chose a career in #research , because #Hawaiisfuture requires skilled local and indigenous individuals that can merge contemporary science and technology with the values of our community. #sciencewithvalues #sciencebykfunk #kanakascience #originstory
Ahupua'a : Land divisions that were used in ancient Hawaii that were often based off of the watershed of a stream. They contained the necessary resources for living and sustaining a civilization and not upsetting their culture or region. They were created as a way to help the Hawaiian chieftains (ali'i) divide the lands in a way to give land to families so that they all had the necessary resources needed to thrive. Management principles, philosophies and practices enabled Native Hawaiians to successfully meet their subsistence needs while converging their natural resources and protecting their ecosystem. While researching new areas to bring friends to on the next #growparadiseretreat , I discovered the Amy B Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden just a few miles from home. This garden has only varieties that were growing here before Captain Cook arrived. This variety of banana is quickly becoming my new favorite - the popo'ulu - unreal vigor and perfect raw or cooked in coconut oil :) come join us on the next retreat in early January - email me for details @ Anthony@growparadise.com ... The #Moana calls to me, so I spend time with her nearly everyday, doesn't matter how I visit her, what's important is that I am there. The ocean needs us to nourish and protect her...We have been given this privilege to have her in our lives it is our responsibility to take care of her in return. That is what #kuleana means Privilege/Responsibility. The ocean and other natural bodies of water (like rivers and lakes) are sources of vital minerals that our bodies need for optimal health that we may be lacking in our diets. The ocean in particular is how we can absorb magnesium which maintains nerve and muscle function, a healthy immune system and aids in energy production. Although that stuff is good to know (please research further), the true intent of this post is to inspire you to go out into #wildwater , see for yourself how much better you feel just to be THERE! See for yourself how much you're health will change just by spending more time outside! This is nothing new, we don't need research to tell us that sources of #wildwater is good for us, we need to reconnect that is all...#nativeecology #traditionalecologicalknowledge #ahupua 'a #konohiki #keepersofhonua #keepitlocalspreaditglobal #protectdamoana #turtles #biodiversity #climate #conservation #environmentalism #earth #ecosystem #ecotourism #wildlife #coral
