Princess Michael of Kent: Argyll Daisy Brooches
Today is Princess Michael of Kent’s birthday and since I’ve covered all of her tiaras - theres only two - I’m going to tell you about another piece that has been, on occasion, turned into a hair ornament/mini tiara. The Argyll Daisy Brooches are three separate brooches, one large and two small that are encrusted with diamonds and set in white and yellow gold. They were made by Garrard for Princess Louise, who was the second youngest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a present for her upcoming marriage to the Duke of Argyll (hence the name.) There were only three brooches because the gift came from three of her siblings, Prince Arthur, Prince Leopold and Princess Beatrice. On her wedding day, Princess Louise wore the daisy brooches in her hair to secure her veil. The Duchess of Argyll always remained close to her family members and had a particular fondness for the Duke and Duchess of Kent, so when the time came she left several pieces of jewelry, including the daisy brooches to Princess Marina, the Duchess of Kent who wore them often, as did her daughter, Princess Alexandra. —————————————————————
Princess Marina left the brooches to her son, Prince Michael of Kent and that’s why we have seen them on Princess Michael of Kent. Always one to play with her jewels, Princess Michael had the two smaller brooches modified so she could also wear them as earrings and has used the larger one as a necklace pendant. More recently the Princess had the brooches mounted on a diamond aigrette base so she could wear them in her hair as a possible small tiara or hair ornament. To me, the daisies as a small tiara is sweet and I hope someday she will wear them like this again.
