Old Logos, Part Three: Back in the day, before iTunes, Spotify, streaming, etc., I designed a lot (over 200) of music packaging (remember compact discs, kids?), primarily for the great independent label, Rounder. One assignment I was honored to work on was to update their very own logo. Another was The Alan Lomax Collection, which was an amazing project that helped bring his historically important and influential recordings to a new and wider audience. #logo logos #graphicdesign #rounderrecords @rounderrecords @alanlomaxarchive #alanlomax #rootsmusic #raffi @aigadesign

Charlie Patton is considered to be the father of the delta blues. Born to a former slave, he was born on the Dockery Plantation, which was renown to being the place where a number of important blues figures were born. Many of his ideas can be found in blues songs that were soon to come. It has also been said that he would play the guitar behind his back, and between his legs, predating the moves that Hendrix would be famous for. Fortunately, unlike other great artist of that time, many of his songs are recorded and you can experience the birth of the modern day blues sound. #blackhistory #blackhistorymonth #bluesmusic #blues #howlinwolf #muddywaters #dockeryplantation #robertjohnson #sonhouse #jackwhite #alanlomax #history #guitar #bluesguitar #music #soul
When I was in NYC a few weeks back, I stopped into @academylpcd and scooped up more than a handful of Prestige International releases, each belonging to the Alan Lomax Documentary Series. Not international at all, this series focused on field recordings of American southern folk music in the form of blues, “work songs” and southern white spirituals. With much of the music recorded in Georgia and the surrounding states, this was of particular interest to me, in addition to the Prestige and RVG pedigrees. This music is absolutely captivating and feels rawer and more important than the many blues musicians Lomax plucked out of the south in the 60s and paraded around Newport. I realize that wording sounds accusatory and I only kind of mean it that way. Lomax was famous for “rediscovering” Robert Johnson and Lead Belly, among others. He was also famous for recording and revitalizing interest in American folk music which resulted in preservation, appreciation and imitation that to be fair gave us music that was more advised and aware of its roots. This stuff is a time capsule of blues and spirituals that directly inspired the origins of jazz, and it was recorded with modern equipment and techniques that allows you to experience it a few degrees closer than noisy old 78s. I’ve always got my eye out for the remaining volumes and you’d be surprised how readily available they are if you check the folk and blues sections of your local record store. I even left behind a few at Academy for the next collector.
I was sitting in on an old-time jam this past Sunday. We were going through G tunes and this one was played. I hadn’t heard it before but it’s a goodin’! John Lomax recorded Emmett Lundy playing this song titled, “Piney Woods Girl” in 1941 for the Library of Congress. I’ve decided I should make this entire month postings related to black history... assuming I have enough material. Here’s a fav: [LeadBelly.] [Huddie Ledbetter.] Lomax, John A. and Alan. Negro Folk Songs as Sung By Leadbelly "King of the Twelve-String Guitar Players of the World," Long-Time Convict in the Penitentiaries of Texas and Louisiana. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1936. Small 4to. iv, 242pp. Original tan cloth lettered in red. Spine faded and tanned, very good without the dustjacket. A very good or better copy. Cloth. First edition, a very interesting book about one of the greatest blues guitar players during the advent of recorded sound. The book contains a life story as given by Lead Belly as well as forty-nine songs with his descriptions transcribed in his vernacular. The Lomax’s, first John, and later joined by Alan, travelled with Lead Belly around the South, eventually heading for New York, where they spent another three months, by which time Lead Belly’s story (exaggerated at the very least) of release from prison based on the Governor hearing a recording of his singing had aroused the curiosity of audiences there. The Lomax’s set out to use the new technology of sound recording to document the folk song traditions of America and their recordings in the Library of Congress represent the earliest available sounds that would become the quintessential American artform: jazz and blues. A film was made in 1976 based on the life of Lead Belly, and he continues to be revered by guitar aficionados. #leadbelly #blues #bluesguitar #blackhistorymonth #alanlomax

These books were given to me as a gift from my lovely dad, who truly appreciates music, and encourages me as a musician. Dad said: ““Our side of the Lomax clan went East (PA, NY), and Alan’s side of the Lomax family went South and to Texas”. At one time my grandpa Stan Lomax (Alan’s cousin) and Alan worked at the same radio station at WOR in NY. Picked up this amazing #AlanLomax box set from @cabinfloorrecords last night.
Alan Lomax’s experience interviewing Lead Belly encouraged him to further explore the genre of oral biography. His conversations with Jelly Roll Morton, recorded in 1938 in the Coolidge Auditorium at the Library of Congress, formed the basis for Mister Jelly Roll: The Fortunes of Jelly Roll Morton, New Orleans Creole and “Inventor of Jazz”, a remarkable account closely following Morton’s narrative that is essential for anyone wishing to understand the history of jazz. Lomax’s oral historical portrait of “Nora” in The Rainbow Sign was based on the extensive interviews and recordings of Alabama folk singer Vera Hall he made in the late forties. Blues in the Mississippi Night (1947), an album of music and candid discussion by Memphis Slim, Big Bill Broonzy, and Sonny Boy Williamson, remains a classic recorded document of African-American social and musical history, reissued by Rounder Records in 2002. “Every time I took one of those big, black, glass-based platters out of its box,” Lomax wrote of the recording process, “I felt that a magical moment was opening up in time…. For me, the black discs spinning in the Mississippi night, spitting the chip centripetally toward the center of the table ... heralded a new age of writing human history.” A joint field trip conducted by the Library of Congress and Fisk University in 1941 and 1942, and described in Lomax’s 1993 memoir, The Land Where the Blues Began, took him even deeper into the musical and cultural world of the African American South. In the hill country of Mississippi, he documented styles of fife-and-drum and quills (panpipes) music, ground-hugging dance, and hocketing song that had kept remarkably close to their African roots. In the Delta he interviewed and made the first recordings of 29-year-old singer and guitarist McKinley Morganfield, later known as Muddy Waters. In 1947, for the fifth time, Lomax returned to Mississippi with the first portable tape recorder to make high-fidelity recordings of Delta church services and of the prisoners’ work songs at the penitentiary of Parchman Farm. #alanlomax #johnlomax #fieldrecording #muddywaters #leadbelly #parchmanfarm #bukkawhite #theblues #music #musicology
I'm leading six undergraduate courses this term. All written by my hand. - Professional and creative autonomy in this political climate, is, without question, life's delight. - I ran two sessions on identity and folk music week last week with one of my favourite guest speakers, folklorist Steve Roud. - Three hours spent stripping back OUR collective contemporary perception of music as entertainment to understand music before the invention of electricity, gramophones, cinema, radio, television or the industry that has conceptualised the construction & dissemination of melody & lyricism into a sales competition. - There's a lot to cover: humming, lullabies and nursery rhymes. Songs of worship, work songs, communal singing (familial, social, regional), unwritten & exchanged by mouth & memory. Cecil Sharp's transatlantic undertaking to capture the origins of English song; Classical music forging of a 'new' (competitive) British musical identity by mining & marrying folk's indigeneity. The post-war folk revival spawning a British romanticism in a disillusioned post-war generation for the expressive freedom of Guthrie's impoverished musical hobo. The dedicated, inspirational, inventiveness of Davy Graham, the befuddling humility of Shirley Collins... and her collaborative ethnomusicological work w/ Alan Lomax. - It's all so delicious, engaging and relentlessly interesting. 🎶🎶🌎🌍🌏. - #Repost from @folkmusicarchive with @regram.app ... "This Day In Music History: January 31st" #thisdayinmusichistory 1970, American blues musician Slim Harpo died of a heart attack while recording in London aged 46. His most successful and influential recordings included ‘I'm a King Bee’ (1957), ‘Rainin' In My Heart’ (1961), and ‘Baby Scratch My Back’ (1966). A master of the blues harmonica, his stage name was derived from the popular nickname for that instrument, the "harp". The Rolling Stones, Pretty Things, Yardbirds and Them all covered his songs. 1970, The Jackson Five went to No.1 on the US singles chart with 'I Want You Back'. The song was originally written for Gladys Knight & The Pips and was the first of four No.1's for the group. It made No.2 in the UK. 2014, American businesswoman, composer and songwriter Anna Gordy Gaye died three days after her 92nd birthday. An elder sister of Motown founder Berry Gordy, she became a record executive in the mid-to-late 1950s distributing records released on Checker and Gone Records before forming the Anna label. Gordy later became known as a songwriter for several hits including the Originals' ‘Baby, I'm for Real’, and two songs on Marvin Gaye's What's Going On album. The first wife of Gaye, their turbulent marriage later served as inspiration for Gaye's album, Here, My Dear. 2015, R&B rock and roll singer and songwriter Don Covay passed away at the age of 78. His most successful recordings include 'Mercy, Mercy' (1964), 'See-Saw' (1965), and 'It's Better to Have (and Don't Need)' (1974). He also wrote 'Pony Time', a US No.1 hit for Chubby Checker, and 'Chain of Fools', a Grammy-winning song for Aretha Franklin. #happybornday #michaelfourens #harveywaynecasey #johnnyrotten #elconde #charliemusselwhite #philipglass #garnettbrown #rickhall #chuckwillis #marvinjunior #alanlomax

#eleonorabordonaro #cuttunielame #sicilia #linguasiciliana #worldmusic #etnomusic #concerti #radici #folksiciliano #alanlomax

The Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, MS is the oldest blues museum in the world and an amazing depository on everything covering Delta blues artists, culture and history. They have a cool exhibit on McKinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters: 1913 - 1983) born on the Stovall Plantation just outside Clarksdale, MS. He was first discovered and recorded in 1941 when Alan Lomax, on a research study for the Library of Congress, passed through Clarksdale, MS documenting the top blues artists of that era. This is Muddy’s home on the plantation before he left to seek his fame in Chicago and Chess Records. Lead Belly - The Library of Congress Recordings. Huddie Ledbetter spent a few spells in prison for murder and attempted murder and as tradition goes was twice released early after singing for the respective governors and asking for a pardon. This is a 3 Lp set of recordings with the initial session taking place at Louisiana State Penitentiary where he was discovered by folklorists John Lomax and Alan Lomax. Leadbelly, _Take This Hammer: Huddie Ledbetter Memorial Album_, Folkways, 1950, original mono 10" pressing: swipe right for label and booklet pics. Huddie Ledbetter, aka Leadbelly, was born on this day 130 years ago (1889, if you're struggling!) This is maybe the oldest record in my collection: a 1950 Folkways pressing of Leadbelly "work songs and spirituals" as "edited" by Alan Lomax, who also writes the introduction and notes for the accompanying eight-page lyric booklet (third pic). Leadbelly had only recently died (on December 6, 1949), so the record is subtitled "memorial album." At the time this record appeared, the 33rpm "microgroove" format itself was only about two years old (mostly in the form of 12"s, but also 10"s like this one): note the claim about the "long playing non-breakable microgroove 33 1/3 rpm" on the label (second pic). Furthermore, this was only the fourth-ever release in this series for the now-fabled Folkways Records, which also issued it as 2x12" 78rpm records--a sign that the era's format wars were not yet conclusively won. . . . #leadbelly #huddieledbetter #takethishammer #folkways #folkwaysrecords #alanlomax #vinyladdict #vinyljunkie #vinylcollection #vinylcollector #nowspinning #nowplaying #recordcollector #recordcollection #33rpm #cratedigging #vinylgram #vinylcommunity #instavinyl #vinylrecords #vinylwrap #vinyl

This is the second edition (1963) of ‘The Folk Songs of North America’ collected by Alan Lomax, with melodies & guitar chords transcribed by Peggy Seeger. First edition was 1960 by this publisher. Shirley Collins was the Editorial Assistant. Believe it or not, I picked up this giant hardback beauty (623 pages) in a local library book sale in about 1980. Can you believe it? They actually withdrew this book from the public shelves! I couldn’t believe my luck, but also I wanted it to be available to library users, but I was told that it was very rarely borrowed. I worked in that library - Slough - you should be ashamed of yourselves! Anyway I bought it for £1 & have treasured it ever since. It came to a good home. I’ve loved delving deep into this book & learning many of these songs, it’s like digging for gold, sometimes you come up with some real good nuggets. #favouritebooks #alanlomax #peggyseeger #shirleycollins #folksongs #northamerica #libraries #books #publisher #cassell

"Ten Thousand Miles" Sung By- Aunt Molly Jackson Recorded By- Alan Lomax for The Library of Congress in New York, New York circa 1939 Album- Library of Congress Anglo American Shanties, Lyric Songs, Dance Tunes, and Spirituals AFS L2 This song tells of the parting of two lovers as the young man goes to war. It's an American recreation of various fragments of the British traditional ballad. The first reference to any ballad sounding like this was published in the Roxburghe Ballads in 1710. "A Red, Red, Rose" written by Robert Burns also shares lyrics along with the folk song "My Dear Mary Ann". "These Love songs, perhaps more then the ballads, have been close to the hearts of the people and they have been further changed by their residence in this country. Without them, the negro blues would have never have grown as they have, nor would we have our present rich stock of contemporary "hill-billy" lyric songs." - Alan Lomax Mary Magdalene Garland Stewart Jackson Stamos a.k.a Aunt Molly Jackson was born in Clay County, Kentucky in 1880. She began learning songs from her Great Grandmother Nancy MacMahan. As a midwife she delivered 884 babies. Her first husband died and her brother and father were blinded in mining accidents. These two events fueled her to join the Untied Mine Workers. She began writting protest songs like "I am a Union Women" and "Poor Miner's Farwell". She was jailed for her unionizing and her second husband was forced to divorce her. She was discovered in 1931 and went to perform and influence many artist including Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Happy birthday to ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax (January 31, 1915 – July 19, 2002), best known for his numerous field recordings of folk music of the 20th century. He was also a musician himself, as well as a folklorist, archivist, writer, scholar, political activist, oral historian, and film-maker. Lomax produced recordings, concerts, and radio shows in the US and in England, which played an important role in preserving folk music traditions in both countries, and helped start both the American and British folk revivals of the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s. He collected material first with his father, folklorist and collector John A. Lomax, and later alone and with others, Lomax recorded thousands of songs and interviews for the Archive of American Folk Song, of which he was the director, at the Library of Congress on aluminum and acetate discs. After 1942, when Congress cut off the Library of Congress's funding for folk song collecting, Lomax continued to collect independently in Britain, Ireland, the Caribbean, Italy, and Spain, as well as the United States, using the latest recording technology, assembling an enormous collection of American and international culture. In March 2004 the material captured and produced without Library of Congress funding was acquired by the Library, which 'brings the entire seventy years of Alan Lomax's work together under one roof at the Library of Congress, where it has found a permanent home.' With the start of the Cold War, Lomax continued to speak out for a public role for folklore, even as academic folklorists turned inward. He devoted much of the latter part of his life to advocating what he called Cultural Equity, which he sought to put on a solid theoretical foundation through to his Cantometrics research (which included a prototype Cantometrics-based educational program, the Global Jukebox). In the 1970s and 1980s Lomax advised the Smithsonian Institution's Folklife Festival and produced a series of films about folk music, American Patchwork, which aired on PBS in 1991. In his late seventies, Lomax completed a long-deferred memoir #onthisday #musiclegend #alanlomax #icon #historian 🎼🎵🎶🎹🔉🙏✌

#ruthcrawfordseeger wrote this piece in 1931. Dissonant and challenging, #modernist and influential on #georgeperle #elliotcarter and others later, you can hear its echoes in post-war American #avantgarde music. Then she returned home, married #peteseeger s father, “composed babies” #peggyseeger and #mikeseeger , worked with #alanlomax and #johnlomax collecting #folksongs . Peggy said she had little awareness of her mother’s compositions growing up. She was returning to composition when she died in 1953. This is a 1972 #nonesuchrecords #lp with cover by Jo Ann Gruber who designed a lot of covers for #elektra and nonesuch.
