Yes, the little work trays full of pre-academic and academic tasks and materials are important in a well prepared Montessori environment; but just as important is making things like food, drinks, and cleaning supplies available to the child. Here is our snack station for inspiration! I stock the fridge with fruits, veggies, and yogurt. Up top is a basket of cleaning cloths, a pitcher of water, cups, and utensils. They are still on the younger side and our group includes a 2 year-old, so food prep lessons are reserved for times when I am right next to them. However, my 6 year old has reached the point where he is allowed to access things like knives, the toaster, and the big refrigerator and freezer independently to prepare his own food. The HUGE benefit of starting small with a snack station like this when he was younger!
